Abbas, Mohamed 7262796ab7 iwl3945: Fix rate scale for B-mode connection
This patch make sure we use only CCK rate for B only network.
For 3945 driver, it sets REPLY_RATE_SCALE command every time
we connect to a new network. In this command we set for every
rate the number of try and next rate. The problem mac80211 reports
same mode for both B and G mode as IEEE80211_BAND_2GHZ which will cause
using invalid rate other than CCK in B only network. THis patch
on association will examine sta valid rate on association, if no
OFDM rate in valid available rates it considers it as B only mode so
we can set REPLY_RATE_SCALE command with valid B only network and only
choose CCK rate in rate scaling.

Abhijeet Kolekar 011a03300b iwl3945 : Fix a-band association for passive channels
Patch does following things
    1) This patch fixes the a-band association for passive channels with new
uCode feature that it allows direct scan on passive channels after
auto-switch from passive to active. This enables sending of direct probes
on passive channels, as long as some traffic is detected on that channel.
This improves the scanning for hidden SSIDs in A-band,which is all
    passive channels.

This patch fixes the bug no 1748.

        http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1748

    2) This fix will only work with uCode version 15.28.2.8 and above.
Prior versions of uCode would work only if we heard the traffic within
active dwell time, which is much shorter than passive dwell time and
is shorter than typical beacon periods. This patch also provids full
active dwell time even if we hear traffic late in passive dwell.

    3) uCode API version is incremented to 2.

Reinette Chatre a0987a8d68 iwlwifi: rely on API version read from firmware
This adds the infrastructure to support older firmware APIs.
The API version number is stored as part of the filename, we first try to
load the most recent firmware and progressively try lower versions.
The API version is also read from the firmware self and stored as part
of the iwl_priv structure. Only firmware that is supported by driver will
be loaded. The version number read from firmware is compared
to supported versions in the driver not the API version used as part of
filename.

An example using this new infrastrucure:
   if (IWL_UCODE_API(priv->ucode_ver) >= 2) {
Driver interacts with Firmware API version >= 2.
   } else {
Driver interacts with Firmware API version 1.
   }

Johannes Berg 33fd819552 iwlwifi: disable AP mode
iwlwifi does not support AP mode in any way. For one, it doesn't even
buffer multicast/broadcast frames properly. We didn't allow zd1211rw AP

It also doesn't work at all, it doesn't even answer to probe requests,

Tomas Winkler 40a9a82991 iwlwifi: clean key table in iwl_clear_stations_table function
This patch cleans uCode key table bit map iwl_clear_stations_table
since all stations are cleared also the key table must be.

Since the keys are not removed properly on suspend by mac80211
this may result in exhausting key table on resume leading
to memory corruption during removal

This patch also fixes a memory corruption problem reported in
http://marc.info/?l=linux-wireless&m=122641417231586&w=2 and tracked in
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12040.

When the key is removed a second time the offset is set to 255 - this
index is not valid for the ucode_key_table and corrupts the eeprom pointer
(which is 255 bits from ucode_key_table).

I asked around, and he's right, there may be platforms that do not allow
passing such such an address to the DMA API functions. This patch
changes it by using the proper dma_sync_single_range_for_cpu API

Johannes Berg 4018517a1a iwlagn: fix RX skb alignment
So I dug deeper into the DMA problems I had with iwlagn and a kind soul
helped me in that he said something about pci-e alignment and mentioned
the iwl_rx_allocate function to check for crossing 4KB boundaries. Since
there's 8KB A-MPDU support, crossing 4k boundaries didn't seem like
something the device would fail with, but when I looked into the
function for a minute anyway I stumbled over this little gem:

	BUG_ON(rxb->dma_addr & (~DMA_BIT_MASK(36) & 0xff));

Clearly, that is a totally bogus check, one would hope the compiler
removes it entirely. (Think about it)

After fixing it, I obviously ran into it, nothing guarantees the
alignment the way you want it, because of the way skbs and their
headroom are allocated. I won't explain that here nor double-check that
I'm right, that goes beyond what most of the CC'ed people care about.

So then I came up with the patch below, and so far my system has
survived minutes with 64K pages, when it would previously fail in
seconds. And I haven't seen a single instance of the TX bug either. But
when you see the patch it'll be pretty obvious to you why.

This should fix the following reported kernel bugs:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11596
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11393
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11983

I haven't checked if there are any elsewhere, but I suppose RHBZ will
have a few instances too...

I'd like to ask anyone who is CC'ed (those are people I know ran into
the bug) to try this patch.

I am convinced that this patch is correct in spirit, but I haven't
understood why, for example, there are so many unmap calls. I'm not
entirely convinced that this is the only bug leading to the TX reply
errors.

Johannes Berg 8e3bad65a5 mac80211: remove ieee80211_notify_mac
Before ieee80211_notify_mac() was added, it was presented with the
use case of using it to tell mac80211 that the association may
have been lost because the firmware crashed/reset.

Since then, it has also been used by iwlwifi to (slightly) speed
up re-association after resume, a workaround around the fact that
mac80211 has no suspend/resume handling yet. It is also not used
by any other drivers, so clearly it cannot be necessary for "good
enough" suspend/resume.

Unfortunately, the callback suffers from a severe problem: It only
works for station mode. If suspend/resume happens while in IBSS or
any other mode (but station), then the callback is pointless.

Recently, it has created a number of locking issues, first because
it required rtnl locking rather than RCU due to calling sleeping
functions within the critical section, and now because it's called
by iwlwifi from the mac80211 workqueue that may not use the rtnl
because it is flushed under rtnl.
(cf. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12046)

I think, therefore, that we should take a step back, remove it
entirely for now and add the small feature it provided properly.
For suspend and resume we will need to introduce new hooks, and for
the case where the firmware was reset the driver will probably
simply just pretend it has done a suspend/resume cycle to get
mac80211 to reprogram the hardware completely, not just try to
connect to the current AP again in station mode. When doing so, we
will need to take into account locking issues and possibly defer
to schedule_work from within mac80211 for the resume operation,
while the suspend operation must be done directly.

Proper suspend/resume should also not necessarily try to reconnect
to the current AP, the time spent in suspend may have been short
enough to not be disconnected from the AP, mac80211 will detect
that the AP went out of range quickly if it did, and if the
association is lost then the AP will disassoc as soon as a data
frame is sent. We might also take into account WWOL then, and
have mac80211 program the hardware into such a mode where it is
available and requested.

Zhu, Yi 60294de3af iwlwifi: fix priv->iw_mode setting when multiple vif are configured
mac80211 supports multiple virtual interfaces for a single device. For
example, a managed interface (wlan0) and a monitor interface (mon0) can
exist at the same time. Thus priv->iw_mode is not sufficient to track
the wireless mode any more. The patch redefines priv->iw_mode as the
first interface mode (the same as priv->vif->type if priv->vif != NULL).
If another monitor type interface is created later, we don't change
priv->iw_mode into monitor. This way, the original interface still
works. The patch also requests mac80211 to do reassociation after we

Johannes Berg ae5eb02641 mac80211: rewrite HT handling
The HT handling has the following deficiencies, which I've
(partially) fixed:
 * it always uses the AP info even if there is no AP,
hence has no chance of working as an AP
 * it pretends to be HW config, but really is per-BSS
 * channel sanity checking is left to the drivers
 * it generally lets the driver control too much

HT enabling is still wrong with this patch if you have more than
one virtual STA mode interface, but that never happens currently.
Once WDS, IBSS or AP/VLAN gets HT capabilities, it will also be
wrong, see the comment in ieee80211_enable_ht().

Additionally, this fixes a number of bugs:
 * mac80211: ieee80211_set_disassoc doesn't notify the driver any
             more since the refactoring
 * iwl-agn-rs: always uses the HT capabilities from the wrong stuff
mac80211 gives it rather than the actual peer STA
 * ath9k: a number of bugs resulting from the broken HT API

I'm not entirely happy with putting the HT capabilities into
struct ieee80211_sta as restricted to our own HT TX capabilities,
but I see no cleaner solution for now.

This patch makes usage of the results from disconnected antenna alg to
know how many antennas are connected.

It also synchronizes between the chain noise alg and the W/A that
disables power management during association. All the antennas must be
enables during the chain noise algorithm. Hence, power management is
restored only after the completion of the algorithm.

In the future, we will need to update the AP that we don't support MIMO

Tomas Winkler 73b7d74251 iwlwifi: fix Tx cmd memory allocation failure handling
This patch "iwlwifi: do not use GFP_DMA in iwl_tx_queue_init" removes
GFP_DMA from allocation tx command buffers. GFP_DMA allows allocation
only for memory under 16M which causes allocation problems
suspend/resume flows.

Using kmalloc is temporal solution and some consistent/coherent
allocation schema will be more correct. Since iwlwifi hardware
supports 64bit address this solution should work on x86 (32 and

Assaf Krauss b94d8eea44 iwlwifi: W/A for the TSF correction in IBSS
This patch is a W/A for the TSF sync issue in IBSS merging. HW is not
capable to sync TSF (it's constantly little behind). This creates
constant IBSS merging upon reception of each beacon, adding and removing
station which in turn creates above 50% packet loss and thus dramatically
degrade the throughput. The W/A simply stops the driver from declaring it
has a reliable TSF value and thus eliminates IBSS merging.

Sven Wegener 5cbbb376d6 iwlwifi: Don't use buffer allocated on the stack for led names
Having the buffer on the stack and even re-using it for all led devices is bad.
Not being able to resolve the name member of the led device structure to a
meaningful value leads to confusion during ad-hoc debugging and potential
breakage in the future, if we ever decide to access the name member outside of
the registration function. Move the buffer to our private per led device
structures so that it is accessible after registration.

A quick grep didn't yield any occurence of using the led device name parameter
outside of the led device registration function, so currently we should already
be safe for normal operation.

The calls to iwl|iwl3945_rfkill_set_hw_state() had to be moved because
rfkill_force_state() cannot be called from an atomic context.
Tested on iwl3945 and seems to work fine.

Emmanuel Grumbach 4b8817b2a0 iwlwifi: remove useless network and duplicate checking
The iwlwifi drivers go to great lengths to avoid passing packets to
mac80211 they think shouldn't go there, while mac80211 can (of course!)
handle them very well.

Especially in the case of duplicate packets this is interesting
because it's such a performance hog (especially for IBSS networks)
while mac80211 does that work on the side without much effort.

This patch removes all that and leaves only what is absolutely
necessary for the hardware.

Emmanuel Grumbach 43d59b3237 iwlwifi: send ADD_STA before RXON with assoc bit
This patch fixes a bug in association flow. As soon as RXON with assoc bit
is sent, uCode expects to have an entry in its station table that describe
the AP. Receiving a beacon from an HT AP before sending ADD_STA results a
uCode error. This patch sends first the ADD_STA (bcast and bssid) and only
then RXON with assoc bit set

Emmanuel Grumbach 24e5c40130 iwlwifi: better station table maintenance
This patch makes the station table maintenance safer. Two flags are
maintained:

1) if station is present in driver
2) if station is present in uCode

This will allow us in the future to deal with more stations than the
firmware allows.

Harvey Harrison fd7c8a40b2 mac80211: add helpers for frame control testing
A few general categories:

1) ieee80211_has_* tests if particular fctl bits are set, the helpers are de
in the same order as the fctl defines:

A combined _has_a4 was also added to test when both FROMDS and TODS are set.

2) ieee80211_is_* is meant to test whether the frame control is of a certain
ftype - data, mgmt, ctl, and two special helpers _is_data_qos, _is_data_pres
which also test a subset of the stype space.

When testing for a particular stype applicable only to one ftype, functions
like ieee80211_is_ack have been added. Note that the ftype is also being
checked in these helpers. They have been added for all mgmt and ctl stypes
in the same order as the STYPE defines.

3) ieee80211_get_* is meant to take a struct ieee80211_hdr * and returns a
pointer to somewhere in the struct, see get_SA, get_DA, get_qos_ctl.

The intel wireless drivers had helpers that used this namespace, convert the
all to use the new helpers and remove the byteshifting as they were defined
in cpu-order rather than little-endian.
