There were individual waitqueues for each epfile but eps_enable
would iterate through all of them, resulting in essentially the
same wakeup time.
The waitqueue represents the function being enabled, so a central
waitqueue in ffs_data makes more sense and is less redundant.
Also use wake_up_interruptible to reflect use of
wait_event_interruptible.

This allows users to make an ioctl call as the first action on a
connection. Ex, some functions might want to get endpoint size
before making any i/os.
Previously, calling ioctls before read/write would depending on the
timing of endpoints being enabled.
ESHUTDOWN is now a possible return value and ENODEV is not, so change
docs accordingly.

This allows audio gadget to be used with controllers
which have a shortage or unavailability of endpoints
that can handle max packet size of 1023 (FS) or 1024

Check for bad pointer that may result because of kthread_create failure.
This check is needed since the gserial setup callback function
(gs_console_setup()) is only freeing the info->con_buf in case of
kthread_create failure which will result into bad info->console_thread
pointer.
Without checking info->console_thread pointer validity in the

This patch reworks the way f_mass_storage.c handles memory barriers
and synchronization:
The driver now uses a wait_queue instead of doing its own
task-state manipulations (even though only one task will ever
use the wait_queue).
The thread_wakeup_needed variable is removed. It was only a
source of trouble; although it was what the driver tested to
see whether it should wake up, what we really wanted to see
was whether a USB transfer had completed.
All the explicit memory barriers scattered throughout the
driver are replaced by a few calls to smp_load_acquire() and
smp_store_release().
The inreq_busy and outreq_busy fields are removed. In their
place, the driver keeps track of the current I/O direction by
splitting BUF_STATE_BUSY into two states: BUF_STATE_SENDING
and BUF_STATE_RECEIVING.
The buffer states are no longer protected by a lock. Mutual
exclusion isn't needed; the state is changed only by the
driver's main thread when it owns the buffer, and only by the
request completion routine when the gadget core owns the buffer.
The do_write() and throw_away_data() routines were reorganized
to make efficient use of the new sleeping mechanism. This
resulted in the removal of one indentation level in those
routines, making the patch appear to be more more complicated
than it really is.
In a few places, the driver allowed itself to be frozen although
it really shouldn't have (in the middle of executing a SCSI
command). Those places have been fixed.
The logic in the exception handler for aborting transfers and
waiting for them to stop has been simplified.

This patch makes several adjustments to the way f_mass_storage.c
handles its internal state and asynchronous notifications (AKA
exceptions):
A number of states weren't being used for anything.
They are removed.
The FSG_STATE_IDLE state was renamed to FSG_STATE_NORMAL,
because it now applies whenever the gadget is operating
normally, not just when the gadget is idle.
The FSG_STATE_RESET state was renamed to
FSG_STATE_PROTOCOL_RESET, indicating that it represents a
Bulk-Only Transport protocol reset and not a general USB
reset.
When a signal arrives, it's silly for the signal handler to
send itself another signal! Now it takes care of everything
inline.
Along with an assortment of other minor changes in the same category.

Here is the big USB patchset for 4.12-rc1.
Lots of good stuff here, after many many many attempts, the kernel
finally has a working typeC interface, many thanks to the Heikki and
Guenter and others who have taken the time to get this merged. It
wasn't an easy path for them at all.
There's also a staging driver that uses this new api, which is why it's
coming in through this tree.
Along with that, there's the usual huge number of changes for gadget
drivers, xhci, and other stuff. Johan also finally refactored pretty
much every driver that was looking at USB endpoints to do it in a common
way, which will help prevent any "badly-formed" devices from causing
problems in drivers. That too wasn't a simple task.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported

Currently ffs_dev::name can be either allocated by the client of
the ffs_dev structure or by the f_fs.c core itself. The former
is used by g_ffs while the latter happens with configfs.
Historically, g_ffs did not need to allocate separate buffer for
the name so what is now f_fs.c core never cared about freeing
that space. With configfs the name needs to be copied since the
memory is not guaranteed to be availeble after ffs_set_inst_name
finishes.
The complication is therefore here to avoid allocations in the
g_ffs case but it complicates the code inproportinally to
benefits it provides. In particular, g_ffs is considered
‘legacy’ so optimising for its sake is unlikely to be worth the
effort.
With that observation in mind, simplify the code by unifying the
code paths in g_ffs and configfs paths. Furthermore, instead of
allocating a new buffer for the name, simply embed it in the
ffs_dev structure. This further makes the memory management
less convoluted and error-prone.
The configfs interface for functionfs imposed a limit of 40
characters for the name so this results in a 41-byte buffer
added to the structure. (For short names this may lead to
wasted memory but the actual amount is not immediately obvious
and depends on pointer size and which slab buckets the structure
and name would fall into).

Without this host uvcvideo driver will always see the wrong
wBytesPerInterval for SuperSpeed uvc gadget and may not find
a suitable video interface endpoint.
e.g. for streaming_maxburst = 0 case it will always

This reverts commit 4fbac5206a.
This commit breaks g_webcam when used with uvc-gadget [1].
The user space application (e.g. uvc-gadget) is responsible for
sending response to UVC class specific requests on control endpoint
in uvc_send_response() in uvc_v4l2.c.
The bad commit was causing a duplicate response to be sent with
incorrect response data thus causing UVC probe to fail at the host
and broken control transfer endpoint at the gadget.

Here's the big pull request for the Gadget
API. Again the majority of changes sit in dwc2
driver. Most important changes contain a workaround
for GOTGCTL being wrong, a sleep-inside-spinlock fix
and the big series of cleanups on dwc2.
One important thing on dwc3 is that we don't anymore
need gadget drivers to cope with unaligned OUT
transfers for us. We have support for appending one
extra chained TRB to align transfer ourselves.
Apart from these, the usual set of typos,
non-critical fixes, etc.

OS descriptor head, when flagged as provided, is accessed without
checking if it fits in provided buffer. Verify length before access.
Also, there are other places where buffer length it checked
after accessing offsets which are potentially past the end. Check
buffer length before as well to fail cleanly.

Since commit: ba1582f222 ("usb: gadget: f_hid: use alloc_ep_req()")
we cannot allocate any requests in bind() as we check if we should
align request buffer based on endpoint descriptor which is assigned
in set_alt().
Allocating request in bind() function causes a NULL pointer
dereference.
This commit moves allocation of IN request from bind() to set_alt()
to prevent this issue.

It is allowed by the USB specification to enabled same-address, opposite-
direction endpoints simultaneously, which means 30 non-zero endpoints
are allowed. So double eps_addrmap length to 30.
The original code only accepted 14 descriptors out of a likely intended 15
(as there are 15 endpoint addresses, ignoring direction), because the first
eps_addrmap entry is unused (it is a placeholder for endpoint zero). So
increase eps_addrmap length by one to 31.

There are only two requests for uac2, it may not be enough at high
loading system which usb interrupt handler can't be serviced on
time, then the data will be lost since it is isoc transfer for audio.
In this patch, we introduce a parameter for the number for usb request,
and the user can override it if current number for request is not enough
for his/her use case.
Besides, update this parameter for legacy audio gadget and documentation.

When we unlock our spinlock to copy data to user we may get
disabled by USB host and free the whole list of completed out

To prevent from this let's remove our working element from

copy_from_iter_full(), copy_from_iter_full_nocache() and
csum_and_copy_from_iter_full() - counterparts of copy_from_iter()
et.al., advancing iterator only in case of successful full copy
and returning whether it had been successful or not.
Convert some obvious users. *NOTE* - do not blindly assume that
something is a good candidate for those unless you are sure that
not advancing iov_iter in failure case is the right thing in
this case. Anything that does short read/short write kind of
stuff (or is in a loop, etc.) is unlikely to be a good one.

"When unlink(2) is called on the symbolic link, the source item is
notified via the ->drop_link() method. Like the ->drop_item() method,
this is a void function and cannot return failure."
The ->drop_item() is indeed a void function, the ->drop_link() is
actually not. This, together with the fact that the value of ->drop_link()
is silently ignored suggests, that it is the ->drop_link() return
type that should be corrected and changed to void.

Most of the work, by far, is on dwc2 this time (68.2%) with dwc3 a far
second (22.5%). The remaining 9.3% are scattered on gadget drivers.
The most important changes for dwc2 are the peripheral side DMA support
implemented by Synopsys folks and support for the new IOT dwc2
compatible core from Synopsys.
In dwc3 land we have support for high-bandwidth, high-speed isochronous
endpoints and some non-critical fixes for large scatter lists.
Apart from these, we have our usual set of cleanups, non-critical fixes,

Merge tag 'usb-for-v4.10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/balbi/usb into usb-next
Felipe writes:
usb: patches for v4.10 merge window
One big merge this time with a total of 166 non-merge commits.
Apart from these, we have our usual set of cleanups, non-critical fixes,
etc.

Properly check the return code of ffs_func_revmap_intf() and
ffs_func_revmap_ep() for a non-negative value.
Instead of checking the return code, the comparison was performed for the last
parameter of the function calls, because of wrong parenthesis.
This also fixes the following static checker warning:
drivers/usb/gadget/function/f_fs.c:3152 ffs_func_req_match()

dev_kfree_skb_any() is used to free packets that are dropped by the
network stack. Therefore the function should not be used for packets
that have been successfully processed by the network stack. Instead
dev_consume_skb_any() has to be used for such consumed packets.
This separation helps to identify dropped packets.

According to Dave Miller "the networking stack has a
hard requirement that all SKBs which are transmitted
must have their completion signalled in a fininte
amount of time. This is because, until the SKB is
freed by the driver, it holds onto socket,
netfilter, and other subsystem resources."
In summary, this means that using TX IRQ throttling
for the networking gadgets is, at least, complex and
we should avoid it for the time being.

ep->mult is supposed to be set to Isochronous and
Interrupt Endapoint's multiplier value. This value
is computed from different places depending on the
link speed.
If we're dealing with HighSpeed, then it's part of
bits [12:11] of wMaxPacketSize. This case wasn't
taken into consideration before.
While at that, also make sure the ep->mult defaults
to one so drivers can use it unconditionally and
assume they'll never multiply ep->maxpacket to zero.

Use current_time() instead.
CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe.
This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions
vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them
y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be
extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all
file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also,
current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be
y2038 safe.
Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used
to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they
share the same time granularity.

It can sometimes be necessary for gadget drivers to process non-standard
control requests, which host devices can send without having sent
USB_REQ_SET_CONFIGURATION.
Therefore, the req_match() usb_function method is enhanced with the new
parameter "config0". When a USB configuration is active, this parameter
is false. When a non-core control request is processed in
composite_setup(), without an active configuration, req_match() of the
USB functions of all available configurations which implement this
function, is called with config0=true. Then the control request gets
processed by the first usb_function instance whose req_match() returns
true.

Introduce an attribute "inquiry_string" to the lun.
In some environments, e. g. BIOS boot menus, the inquiry string
is the only information about devices presented to the user. The
default string depends on the "cdrom" bit of the first lun as
well as the kernel version and allows no further customization.
So without access to the client it is not obvious which gadget is
active at a given point and what any of the available luns might
contain.

old behavior is preserved.

When rndis data transfer is in progress, some Windows7 Host PC is not
sending the GET_ENCAPSULATED_RESPONSE command for receiving the response
for the previous SEND_ENCAPSULATED_COMMAND processed.
The rndis function driver appends each response for the
SEND_ENCAPSULATED_COMMAND in a queue. As the above process got corrupted,
the Host sends a REMOTE_NDIS_RESET_MSG command to do a soft-reset.
As the rndis response queue is not freed, the previous response is sent
as a part of this REMOTE_NDIS_RESET_MSG's reset response and the Host
block any more Rndis transfers.
Hence free the rndis response queue as a part of this soft-reset so that
the correct response for REMOTE_NDIS_RESET_MSG is sent properly during the
response command.

Other than this big TRB ring rework on dwc3, we also
have a dwc3-omap DMA initialization fix, some extra

a complete removal of our FIFO resizing logic.
We have a new quirk for some dwc3 P3 quirk in some

When using asynchronous read or write operations on the USB endpoints the
issuer of the IO request is notified by calling the ki_complete() callback
of the submitted kiocb when the URB has been completed.
Calling this ki_complete() callback will free kiocb. Make sure that the
structure is no longer accessed beyond that point, otherwise undefined
behaviour might occur.

When binding the function to usb_configuration, check whether the thread
is running before starting another one. Without that, when function
instance is added to multiple configurations, fsg_bing starts multiple
threads with all but the latest one being forgotten by the driver. This
leads to obvious thread leaks, possible lockups when trying to halt the
machine and possible more issues.
This fixes issues with legacy/multi¹ gadget as well as configfs gadgets
when mass_storage function is added to multiple configurations.
This change also simplifies API since the legacy gadgets no longer need
to worry about starting the thread by themselves (which was where bug
in legacy/multi was in the first place).
N.B., this patch doesn’t address adding single mass_storage function
instance to a single configuration twice. Thankfully, there’s no
legitimate reason for such setup plus, if I’m not mistaken, configfs
gadget doesn’t even allow it to be expressed.
¹ I have no example failure though. Conclusion that legacy/multi has
a bug is based purely on me reading the code.

In the current implementation functionfs generates a EFAULT for async read
operations if the read buffer size is larger than the URB data size. Since
a application does not necessarily know how much data the host side is
going to send it typically supplies a buffer larger than the actual data,
which will then result in a EFAULT error.
This behaviour was introduced while refactoring the code to use iov_iter
interface in commit c993c39b86 ("gadget/function/f_fs.c: use put iov_iter
into io_data"). The original code took the minimum over the URB size and
the user buffer size and then attempted to copy that many bytes using
copy_to_user(). If copy_to_user() could not copy all data a EFAULT error

PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.
This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.
We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.
Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.
Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.
The changes are pretty straight-forward:
- <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};
- page_cache_get() -> get_page();
- page_cache_release() -> put_page();
This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.
The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.
There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

buflen by default (256) is smaller than wMaxPacketSize (512) in high-speed
devices.
That caused the OUT endpoint to freeze if the host send any data packet of
length greater than 256 bytes.
This is an example dump of what happended on that enpoint:
HOST: [DATA][Length=260][...]
DEVICE: [NAK]
HOST: [PING]
DEVICE: [NAK]
HOST: [PING]
DEVICE: [NAK]
...
HOST: [PING]

This patch fixes this problem by setting the minimum usb_request's buffer size
for the OUT endpoint as its wMaxPacketSize.

Since f_midi_transmit is called by both ALSA and USB sub-systems, it can
potentially cause a race condition between both calls because f_midi_transmit
is not reentrant nor thread-safe. This is due to an implementation detail that
the transmit function looks for the next available usb request from the fifo
and only enqueues it if there is data to send, otherwise just re-uses it. So,
if both ALSA and USB frameworks calls this function at the same time,
kfifo_seek() will return the same usb_request, which will cause a race
condition.
To solve this problem a syncronization mechanism is necessary. In this case it
is used a spinlock since f_midi_transmit is also called by usb_request->complete
callback in interrupt context.

For every in_substream, there must be a corresponding gmidi_in_port
structure so it is perfectly viable and some might argue sensible to
stash pointer to the input substream in the gmidi_in_port structure.
This has an added benefit that if in_ports < MAX_PORTS, the whole
f_midi structure takes up less space because only in_ports number of
pointers for in_substream are allocated instead of MAX_PORTS lots of

ffs_epfile_io and ffs_epfile_io_complete runs in different context, but
there is no synchronization between them.
consider the following scenario:
1) ffs_epfile_io interrupted by sigal while
wait_for_completion_interruptible
2) then ffs_epfile_io set ret to -EINTR
3) just before or during usb_ep_dequeue, the request completed
4) ffs_epfile_io return with -EINTR
In this case, ffs_epfile_io tell caller no transfer success but actually
it may has been done. This break the caller's pipe.
Below script can help test it (adbd is the process which lies on f_fs).
while true
do
pkill -19 adbd #SIGSTOP
pkill -18 adbd #SIGCONT
sleep 0.1
done
To avoid this, just dequeue the request first. After usb_ep_dequeue, the
request must be done or canceled.
With this change, we can ensure no race condition in f_fs driver. But
actually I found some of the udc driver has analogical issue in its
dequeue implementation. For example,
1) the dequeue function hold the controller's lock.
2) before driver request controller to stop transfer, a request
completed.
3) the controller trigger a interrupt, but its irq handler need wait
dequeue function to release the lock.
4) dequeue function give back the request with negative status, and
release lock.
5) irq handler get lock but the request has already been given back.
So, the dequeue implementation should take care of this case. IMO, it
can be done as below steps to dequeue a already started request,
1) request controller to stop transfer on the given ep. HW know the
actual transfer status.
2) after hw stop transfer, driver scan if there are any completed one.
3) if found, process it with real status. if no, the request can
canceled.

In the AIO path, if allocating of a request failse, the function simply
goes to the error_lock path whose end result is returning value of ret.
However, at this point ret’s value is zero (assigned as return value from

Fix by adding ‘ret = -ENOMEM’ statement.
Signed-off-by: Michal Nazarewicz <mina86@mina86.com>
Signed-off-by: Felipe Balbi <balbi@kernel.org>
In the ffs_epfile_io function, data buffer is allocated for non-halt
requests. Later, after grabing a mutex, the function checks that
epfile->ep is still ep and if it’s not, it set ret to -ESHUTDOWN and
follow a path including spin_unlock_irq (just after ‘ret = -ESHUTDOWN’),
mutex_unlock (after if-else-if-else chain) and returns ret. Noticeably,
this does not include freeing of the data buffer.
Fix by introducing a goto which moves control flow to the the end of the
function where spin_unlock_irq, mutex_unlock and kfree are all called.

It dose not work when we want to use the usb-to-serial port based
on one usb gadget as a console. Thus this patch adds the console
initialization to support this request.
To avoid the re-entrance when transferring data with usb endpoint,
it introduces a kthread to do the IO transmission.

Converting tcm to the new function interface requires converting
USB tcm's function code and its users.
This patch converts the f_tcm.c to the new function interface.
The file can be now compiled into a separate module usb_f_tcm.ko.
The old function interface is provided by means of preprocessor conditional
directives. After all users are converted, the old interface can be
removed.

The queue_setup callback has a void pointer that is just for V4L2
and is the pointer to the v4l2_format struct that was passed to
VIDIOC_CREATE_BUFS. The idea was that drivers would use the information
from that struct to buffers suitable for the requested format.
After the vb2 split series this pointer is now a void pointer,
which is ugly, and the reality is that all existing drivers will
effectively just look at the sizeimage field of v4l2_format.
To make this more generic the queue_setup callback is changed:
the void pointer is dropped, instead if the *num_planes argument
is 0, then use the current format size, if it is non-zero, then
it contains the number of requested planes and the sizes array
contains the requested sizes. If either is unsupported, then return
-EINVAL, otherwise use the requested size(s).

The gadget ethernet driver supports changing the MTU, but only allows this
when the USB cable is removed. The comment indicates that this is because
the "peer won't know". Even if the network link is still down and only the
USB link is established, the driver won't allow the change.
Other network interfaces allow changing the MTU any time, and don't force
the link to be disabled. This makes perfect sense, because in order to be
able to negotiate the MTU, the link needs to be up.
Remove the restriction so that it is now actually possible to change the
MTU (e.g. using "ifconfig usb0 mtu 15000") without having to manually pull
the plug or change the driver's default setting.
This is especially important after commit bba787a860

This patch introduces pre-allocation of IN endpoint USB requests. This
improves on latency (requires no usb request allocation on transmit) and avoid
several potential probles on allocating too many usb requests (which involves
DMA pool allocation problems).
This implementation also handles better multiple MIDI Gadget ports, always
processing the last processed MIDI substream if the last USB request wasn't
enought to handle the whole stream.

Pull SCSI target updates from Nicholas Bellinger:
"This series contains HCH's changes to absorb configfs attribute
->show() + ->store() function pointer usage from it's original
tree-wide consumers, into common configfs code.
It includes usb-gadget, target w/ drivers, netconsole and ocfs2
changes to realize the improved simplicity, that now renders the
original include/target/configfs_macros.h CPP magic for fabric drivers
and others, unnecessary and obsolete.
And with common code in place, new configfs attributes can be added
easier than ever before.
Note, there are further improvements in-flight from other folks for
v4.5 code in configfs land, plus number of target fixes for post -rc1
code"
In the meantime, a new user of the now-removed old configfs API came in
through the char/misc tree in commit 7bd1d4093c ("stm class: Introduce
an abstraction for System Trace Module devices").
This merge resolution comes from Alexander Shishkin, who updated his stm
class tracing abstraction to account for the removal of the old
show_attribute and store_attribute methods in commit 517982229f
("configfs: remove old API") from this pull. As Alexander says about
that patch:
"There's no need to keep an extra wrapper structure per item and the
awkward show_attribute/store_attribute item ops are no longer needed.
This patch converts policy code to the new api, all the while making
the code quite a bit smaller and easier on the eyes.
Signed-off-by: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com>"
That patch was folded into the merge so that the tree should be fully
bisectable.

1. Rename dequeue_signal_lock() to kernel_dequeue_signal(). This
matches another "for kthreads only" kernel_sigaction() helper.
2. Remove the "tsk" and "mask" arguments, they are always current
and current->blocked. And it is simply wrong if tsk != current.
3. We could also remove the 3rd "siginfo_t *info" arg but it looks
potentially useful. However we can simplify the callers if we
change kernel_dequeue_signal() to accept info => NULL.
4. Remove _irqsave, it is never called from atomic context.
