For large incoming packets > PAGE_SIZE/2 qeth creates a fragmented skb
by adding pointers to qdio pages to the fragment list of the skb.
This avoids allocating big chunks of consecutive memory. Also copying
data from the qdio buffer to the skb is economized.

Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either.
What I do:
Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the
.read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes.
In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and
include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work.
But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes
to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods.
I'm not sure if I missed any. :(
Why I do this:
For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the
struct attribute in the .show/.store method,
while we can't do this for the binary attributes.
I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not
so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones.
So I think this patch is reasonable. :)
Who benefits from it:
The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs
requires such an improvement.
All the table binary attributes share the same .read method.
Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get
the table signature and instance number which are used to
distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes.
Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods
for different ACPI table binary attributes.
This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different
platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded.

sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After
deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper,
so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that
often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to
accessing removed modules.
This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with
this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the
backing module from being unloaded.

IO stall after deleting and path checker changes after reenabling zfcp device
Setting one zfcp device offline using chccwdev in a multipath
environment and waiting will lead to IO stall on all paths.
After setting the zfcp device back online using chccwdev,
the devices with io stall will have a different path checker.
Devices corresponding to the deleted units are never freed.
This has the effect that 'slave_destroy' is never called and zfcp
still thinks that this unit is registered
(ZFCP_STATUS_UNIT_REGISTERED is still set). Hence the erp
routine is not called correctly and the unit is not enabled properly.
Do not delete rport and the sdev. Just set the host to block on
'offline'. Setting host online again will then remove the blocked status
and everything is fine again.

The SCSI stack requires low level drivers to register and
unregister devices. For zfcp this leads to the situation where
zfcp calls the SCSI stack, the SCSI tries to scan the new device
and the scan SCSI command fails. This would require the zfcp erp,
but the erp thread is already blocked in the register call.
The fix is to make sure that the calls from the ERP thread to
the SCSI stack do not block the ERP thread. In detail:
1) Use a workqueue to avoid blocking of the scsi_scan_target calls.
2) When removing a unit make sure that no scsi_scan_target call is
pending.
3) Replace scsi_flush_work with scsi_target_unblock. This avoids
blocking and has the same result.

There is a possible race condition while generating the unique
request ids and sequence numbers. Both might be read at the

For each request that is sent to the FCP adapter, zfcp allocates
memory. Status information and data that is being read from the
device is written to this memory by the hardware. After that,
the hardware signals this via the response queue and zfcp
continues processing.
Now, if zfcp detects that there is a signal for an incoming
response from the hardware, but there is no outstanding request
for that request id, then some memory that can be in use anywhere
in the system has just been overwritten. This should never happen,
but if it does, stop the system with a panic.

So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes
on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the
layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4
64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN...

to set up a callback to perform some action in a different process's
context. This is intended for use by attribute methods that want to
unregister themselves or their parent device. Attribute method calls
are mutually exclusive with unregistration, so such actions cannot be
taken directly.

for SCSI device deletion and one for System/390 ccwgroup devices.

For extended error reporting we sometimes have to start an
Sense Subsystem Status request (SNSS). When this request needs
to be recovered for some reason, the recovery request will
fail with 'command reject'.
Our usual recovery procedure will retry the failed request by
creating a new request and chaining the failed request from that
one. SNSS requests, though, must not be chained from anything,
so the recovery request will fail permanently.
Use the default recovery for SNSS request, which will just restart
the original request without further ado.

After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.
To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.
Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,

The current ccw_device_set_options() sets a specified mask of options
and clears those not specified, but there is no way to find out which
options have already been set.
In order to fix this up, introduce the following interface changes:
ccw_device_set_options() now only sets the specified bits, but does
not clear those that are not specified.
ccw_device_clear_options() clears the specified bits.
ccw_device_set_options_mask() provides the old semantics (setting only
the specified bits and clearing the others).

reference (ETR). The external time reference sends an oscillator
signal and a synchronization signal every 2^20 microseconds to keep
the TOD clocks of all connected servers in sync. For availability
two ETR units can be connected to a machine. If the clock deviates
for more than the sync-check tolerance all cpus get a machine check
that indicates that the clock is out of sync. For the lovely details
how to get the clock back in sync see the code below.

verification again. We need to check for the doverify bit when the
unsolicited interrupt comes in and then do path verification.

The initialization of the dasd_eer code is one of the last steps of the
dasd driver initialization. When initialization fails in one of the
earlier steps, the dasd_exit function is called to clean up what has been
done so far. So the dasd_eer_exit function may be called, although the
dasd_eer_init function wasn't called before and dasd_eer_exit tries to
unregister a misc device that wasn't registered, which results in a BUG.
Make sure that dasd_eer_exit can be called without initialization. Use a
dynamically allocated struct miscdevice instead of a static one, so we
only try to unregister the device if it exists and was actually registered.

Reboot hangs on LPARs without diag308 support. The reason for this is,
that before the reboot is done, the channel subsystem is shut down.
During the reset on each possible subchannel a "store subchannel" is
done. This operation can end in a program check interruption, if the
specified subchannel set is not implemented by the hardware. During
the reset, currently we do not have a program check handler, which
leads to the described kernel bug. We install now a new program check
handler for the reboot code to fix this problem.

Fix the locking of signal->tty.
Use ->sighand->siglock to protect ->signal->tty; this lock is already used
by most other members of ->signal/->sighand. And unless we are 'current'
or the tasklist_lock is held we need ->siglock to access ->signal anyway.
(NOTE: sys_unshare() is broken wrt ->sighand locking rules)
Note that tty_mutex is held over tty destruction, so while holding
tty_mutex any tty pointer remains valid. Otherwise the lifetime of ttys
are governed by their open file handles. This leaves some holes for tty
access from signal->tty (or any other non file related tty access).
It solves the tty SLAB scribbles we were seeing.
(NOTE: the change from group_send_sig_info to __group_send_sig_info needs to
be examined by someone familiar with the security framework, I think
it is safe given the SEND_SIG_PRIV from other __group_send_sig_info
invocations)

In case of re-IPL and diag308 doesn't work we have to reset all devices
manually and wait synchronously that each reset finished.
This patch adds the necessary infrastucture and the first exploiter of it.
Subsystems that need to add a function that needs to be called at re-IPL
may register/unregister this function via
struct reset_call {
struct reset_call *next;
void (*fn)(void);
};
void register_reset_call(struct reset_call *reset);
void unregister_reset_call(struct reset_call *reset);
When the registered function get called the context is:
- all cpus beside the current one are stopped
- all machine checks and interrupts are disabled
- prefixing is disabled
- a default machine check handler is available for use
The registered functions may not take any locks are sleep.
For the common I/O layer part of this patch:
Introduce a reset_call css_reset that does the following:
- clear all subchannels
- perform a rchp on all channel paths and wait for the resulting
machine checks
This replaces the calls to clear_all_subchannels() and
cio_reset_channel_paths() for kexec and ccw reipl. reipl_ccw_dev() now
uses reipl_find_schid() to determine the subchannel id for a given
device id.
Also remove cio_reset_channel_paths() and friends since they are not
needed anymore.

There are a few places in the kernel where the init task is signaled. The
ctrl+alt+del sequence is one them. It kills a task, usually init, using a
cached pid (cad_pid).
This patch replaces the pid_t by a struct pid to avoid pid wrap around
problem. The struct pid is initialized at boot time in init() and can be
modified through systctl with
/proc/sys/kernel/cad_pid
[ I haven't found any distro using it ? ]
It also introduces a small helper routine kill_cad_pid() which is used
where it seemed ok to use cad_pid instead of pid 1.

As part of an SMP cleanliness pass over UML, I consted a bunch of
structures in order to not have to document their locking. One of these
structures was a struct tty_operations. In order to const it in UML
without introducing compiler complaints, the declaration of
tty_set_operations needs to be changed, and then all of its callers need to
be fixed.
This patch declares all struct tty_operations in the tree as const. In all
cases, they are static and used only as input to tty_set_operations. As an
extra check, I ran an i386 allyesconfig build which produced no extra

53 drivers are affected. I checked the history of a bunch of them, and in
most cases, there have been only a handful of maintenance changes in the
last six months. serial_core.c was the busiest one that I looked at.

Make it possible to disable the block layer. Not all embedded devices require
it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require
the block layer to be present.
This patch does the following:
(*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev
support.
(*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls
an item that uses the block layer. This includes:
(*) Block I/O tracing.
(*) Disk partition code.
(*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS.
(*) The SCSI layer. As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the
block layer to do scheduling. Some drivers that use SCSI facilities -
such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this.
(*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM
drivers.
(*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL.
(*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by
taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book.
(*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and
linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set. sector_div() is,
however, still used in places, and so is still available.
(*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and
parts of linux/fs.h.
(*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK
is not enabled.
(*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are
required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set:
(*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening).
(*) Makes some /proc changes:
(*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs.
(*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if
given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified.
(*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined. This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2.
(*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return
error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so).
(*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen.

Right now ->flags is a bit of a mess: some are request types, and
others are just modifiers. Clean this up by splitting it into
->cmd_type and ->cmd_flags. This allows introduction of generic
Linux block message types, useful for sending generic Linux commands
to block devices.

Major cleanup of all s390 inline assemblies. They now have a common
coding style. Quite a few have been shortened, mainly by using register
asm variables. Use of the EX_TABLE macro helps as well. The atomic ops,
bit ops and locking inlines new use the Q-constraint if a newer gcc
is used. That results in slightly better code.
Thanks to Christian Borntraeger for proof reading the changes.

Fix the fix ... One of my previous fixes introduced removal of all fsf
requests in zfcp's eh_host_reset_handler. But this must not happen
before qdio queues are shut down. So, I revert the changes of

Reappearing channel paths are sometimes not utilized by CCW devices
because path verification incorrectly relies on path-operational-mask
information which is not updated until a channel path has been used
again.

a CCW device's path group because resign-from-pathgroup command is
issued with invalid path mask of 0 because internal CCW operations
are masked by the logical path mask after the relevant bits are
cleared by the vary operation.

Subchannel may incorrectly remain in state no-path after channel paths
have reappeared. Currently the scan for subchannels which are using a
channel path ends at the first occurrence if a full link address was
provided by the channel subsystem. The scan needs to continue over
all subchannels.
