Doug Berger fe586b8233 net: phy: bcm7xxx: define soft_reset for 40nm EPHY
The internal 40nm EPHYs use a "Workaround for putting the PHY in
IDDQ mode." These PHYs require a soft reset to restore functionality
after they are powered back up.

This commit defines the soft_reset function to use genphy_soft_reset
during phy_init_hw to accommodate this.

Heiner Kallweit f86854a2e7 net: phy: avoid NPE if read_page/write_page callbacks are not available
Currently there's a bug in the module subsystem [0] preventing load of
the PHY driver module on certain systems (as one symptom).
This results in a NPE on such systems for the following reason:
Instead of the correct PHY driver the genphy driver is loaded that
doesn't implement the read_page/write_page callbacks. Every call to
phy_read_paged() et al will result in a NPE therefore.

In parallel to fixing the root cause we should make sure that this one
and maybe similar issues in other subsystems don't result in a NPE
in phylib. So let's check for the callbacks before using them and warn
once if they are not available.

Marek Vasut 1d951ba3da net: phy: micrel: Update KSZ87xx PHY name
The KSZ8795 PHY ID is in fact used by KSZ8794/KSZ8795/KSZ8765 switches.
Update the PHY ID and name to reflect that, as this family of switches
is commonly refered to as KSZ87xx

Marek Vasut 8b95599c55 net: phy: micrel: Discern KSZ8051 and KSZ8795 PHYs
The KSZ8051 PHY and the KSZ8794/KSZ8795/KSZ8765 switch share exactly the
same PHY ID. Since KSZ8051 is higher in the ksphy_driver[] list of PHYs
in the micrel PHY driver, it is used even with the KSZ87xx switch. This
is wrong, since the KSZ8051 configures registers of the PHY which are
not present on the simplified KSZ87xx switch PHYs and misconfigures
other registers of the KSZ87xx switch PHYs.

Fortunatelly, it is possible to tell apart the KSZ8051 PHY from the
KSZ87xx switch by checking the Basic Status register Bit 0, which is
read-only and indicates presence of the Extended Capability Registers.
The KSZ8051 PHY has those registers while the KSZ87xx switch does not.

This patch implements simple check for the presence of this bit for
both the KSZ8051 PHY and KSZ87xx switch, to let both use the correct
PHY driver instance.

Yonglong Liu 3de5ae5471 net: phy: Fix "link partner" information disappear issue
Some drivers just call phy_ethtool_ksettings_set() to set the
links, for those phy drivers that use genphy_read_status(), if
autoneg is on, and the link is up, than execute "ethtool -s
ethx autoneg on" will cause "link partner" information disappear.

The call trace is phy_ethtool_ksettings_set()->phy_start_aneg()
->linkmode_zero(phydev->lp_advertising)->genphy_read_status(),
the link didn't change, so genphy_read_status() just return, and
phydev->lp_advertising is zero now.

This patch moves the clear operation of lp_advertising from
phy_start_aneg() to genphy_read_lpa()/genphy_c45_read_lpa(), and
if autoneg on and autoneg not complete, just clear what the
generic functions care about.

Russell King 06d5f3441b net: phy: at803x: use operating parameters from PHY-specific status
Read the PHY-specific status register for the current operating mode
(speed and duplex) of the PHY. This register reflects the actual
mode that the PHY has resolved depending on either the advertisements
of autoneg is enabled, or the forced mode if autoneg is disabled.

This ensures that phylib's software state always tracks the hardware
state.

It seems both AR8033 (which uses the AR8031 ID) and AR8035 support
this status register. AR8030 is not known at the present time.

This patch depends on "net: phy: extract pause mode" and "net: phy:

When userspace writes to the MII_ADVERTISE register, we update phylib's
advertising mask and trigger a renegotiation. However, writing to the
MII_CTRL1000 register, which contains the gigabit advertisement, does
neither. This can lead to phylib's copy of the advertisement becoming
de-synced with the values in the PHY register set, which can result in

Andrea Merello ea977d19d9 net: phy: allow for reset line to be tied to a sleepy GPIO controller
mdio_device_reset() makes use of the atomic-pretending API flavor for
handling the PHY reset GPIO line.

I found no hint that mdio_device_reset() is called from atomic context
and indeed it uses usleep_range() since long time, so I would assume that
it is OK to sleep there.

This patch switch to gpiod_set_value_cansleep() in mdio_device_reset().
This is relevant if e.g. the PHY reset line is tied to a I2C GPIO
controller.

This has been tested on a ZynqMP board running an upstream 4.19 kernel and
then hand-ported on current kernel tree.

Pull LED updates from Jacek Anaszewski:
"In this cycle we've finally managed to contribute the patch set
sorting out LED naming issues. Besides that there are many changes
scattered among various LED class drivers and triggers.

  LED naming related improvements:

   - add new 'function' and 'color' fwnode properties and deprecate
'label' property which has been frequently abused for conveying
vendor specific names that have been available in sysfs anyway

   - introduce a set of standard LED_FUNCTION* definitions

   - introduce a set of standard LED_COLOR_ID* definitions

   - add a new {devm_}led_classdev_register_ext() API with the
capability of automatic LED name composition basing on the
properties available in the passed fwnode; the function is
backwards compatible in a sense that it uses 'label' data, if
present in the fwnode, for creating LED name

   - add tools/leds/get_led_device_info.sh script for retrieving LED
vendor, product and bus names, if applicable; it also performs
basic validation of an LED name

   - update following drivers and their DT bindings to use the new LED
     registration API:

        - leds-an30259a, leds-gpio, leds-as3645a, leds-aat1290, leds-cr0014114,
          leds-lm3601x, leds-lm3692x, leds-lp8860, leds-lt3593, leds-sc27xx-blt

  Other LED class improvements:

   - replace {devm_}led_classdev_register() macros with inlines

   - allow to call led_classdev_unregister() unconditionally

   - switch to use fwnode instead of be stuck with OF one

  LED triggers improvements:

   - led-triggers:
        - fix dereferencing of null pointer
        - fix a memory leak bug

   - ledtrig-gpio:
        - GPIO 0 is valid

Drop superseeded apu2/3 support from leds-apu since for apu2+ a newer,
more complete driver exists, based on a generic driver for the AMD
SOCs gpio-controller, supporting LEDs as well other devices:

   - drop profile field from priv data

   - drop iosize field from priv data

   - drop enum_apu_led_platform_types

   - drop superseeded apu2/3 led support

   - add pr_fmt prefix for better log output

   - fix error message on probing failure

Other misc fixes and improvements to existing LED class drivers:

   - leds-ns2, leds-max77650:
        - add of_node_put() before return

   - leds-pwm, leds-is31fl32xx:

Alexandru Ardelean 65d7be094f net: phy: adin: implement Energy Detect Powerdown mode via phy-tunable
This driver becomes the first user of the kernel's `ETHTOOL_PHY_EDPD`
phy-tunable feature.
EDPD is also enabled by default on PHY config_init, but can be disabled via
the phy-tunable control.

When enabling EDPD, it's also a good idea (for the ADIN PHYs) to enable TX
periodic pulses, so that in case the other PHY is also on EDPD mode, there
is no lock-up situation where both sides are waiting for the other to
transmit.

Via the phy-tunable control, TX pulses can be disabled if specifying 0
`tx-interval` via ethtool.

The ADIN PHY supports only fixed 1 second intervals; they cannot be
configured. That is why the acceptable values are 1,
ETHTOOL_PHY_EDPD_DFLT_TX_MSECS and ETHTOOL_PHY_EDPD_NO_TX (which disables
TX pulses).

Marco Hartmann 94acaeb50c Add genphy_c45_config_aneg() function to phy-c45.c
Commit 34786005ec ("net: phy: prevent PHYs w/o Clause 22 regs from calling
genphy_config_aneg") introduced a check that aborts phy_config_aneg()
if the phy is a C45 phy.
This causes phy_state_machine() to call phy_error() so that the phy
ends up in PHY_HALTED state.

Instead of returning -EOPNOTSUPP, call genphy_c45_config_aneg()
(analogous to the C22 case) so that the state machine can run
correctly.

genphy_c45_config_aneg() closely resembles mv3310_config_aneg()
in drivers/net/phy/marvell10g.c, excluding vendor specific
configurations for 1000BaseT.

This change implements retrieving all the error counters from the PHY.

The counters require that the RxErrCnt register (0x0014) be read first,
after which copies of the counters are latched into the registers. This
ensures that all registers read after RxErrCnt are synchronized at the
moment that they are read.

The counter values need to be accumulated by the driver, as each time that
RxErrCnt is read, the values that are latched are the ones that have
incremented from the last read.

Alexandru Ardelean fa5bd9c5f1 net: phy: adin: implement PHY subsystem software reset
The ADIN PHYs supports 4 types of reset:
1. The standard PHY reset via BMCR_RESET bit in MII_BMCR reg
2. Reset via GPIO
3. Reset via reg GeSftRst (0xff0c) & reload previous pin configs
4. Reset via reg GeSftRst (0xff0c) & request new pin configs

Resets 2, 3 & 4 are almost identical, with the exception that the crystal
oscillator is available during reset for 2.

This change implements subsystem software reset via the GeSftRst and
reloading the previous pin configuration (so reset number 3).
This will also reset the PHY core regs (similar to reset 1).

Since writing bit 1 to reg GeSftRst is self-clearing, the only thing that
can be done, is to write to that register, wait a specific amount of time
(10 milliseconds should be enough) and try to read back and check if there
are no errors on read. A busy-wait-read won't work well, and may sometimes
work or not work.

In case phylib is configured to also do a reset via GPIO, the ADIN PHY may
be reset twice when the PHY device registers, but that isn't a problem,
since it's being done on boot (or PHY device register).

The ADIN PHYs support automatic MDI/MDIX negotiation. By default this is

This is controlled via the PHY Control 1 register.
The supported modes are:
  1. Manual MDI
  2. Manual MDIX
  3. Auto MDIX - prefer MDIX
  4. Auto MDIX - prefer MDI

The phydev mdix & mdix_ctrl fields include modes 3 & 4 into a single
auto-mode. So, the default mode this driver enables is 4 when Auto-MDI mode
is used.

When detecting MDI/MDIX mode, a combination of the PHY Control 1 register
and PHY Status 1 register is used to determine the correct MDI/MDIX mode.

If Auto-MDI mode is not set, then the manual MDI/MDIX mode is returned.
If Auto-MDI mode is set, then MDIX mode is returned differs from the
preferred MDI/MDIX mode.
This covers all cases where:
  1. MDI preferred  & Pair01Swapped   == MDIX
  2. MDIX preferred & Pair01Swapped   == MDI
  3. MDI preferred  & ! Pair01Swapped == MDIX
  4. MDIX preferred & ! Pair01Swapped == MDI

The preferred MDI/MDIX mode is not configured via SW, but can be configured
via HW pins. Note that the `Pair01Swapped` is the Green-Yellow physical

Realtek provided information on how the new NIC-integrated PHY's
expose whether they support 2.5G/5G/10G. This allows to automatically
differentiate 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps PHY's, and therefore allows to
remove the fake PHY ID mechanism for RTL8125.
So far RTL8125 supports 2.5Gbps only, but register layout for faster

Heiner Kallweit c36757eb9d net: phy: consider AN_RESTART status when reading link status
After configuring and restarting aneg we immediately try to read the
link status. On some systems the PHY may not yet have cleared the
"aneg complete" and "link up" bits, resulting in a false link-up
signal. See [0] for a report.
Clause 22 and 45 both require the PHY to keep the AN_RESTART
bit set until the PHY actually starts auto-negotiation.
Let's consider this in the generic functions for reading link status.
The commit marked as fixed is the first one where the patch applies
cleanly.

This driver does a funny dance disabling and re-enabling

Just enable the respective delays when in any of the

Same applies to reading NBase-T link partner advertisement.
Unfortunately this 2.5Gbps PHY shares the PHY ID with the integrated

Arseny Solokha c7fa7f567c net: phylink: don't start and stop SGMII PHYs in SFP modules twice
SFP modules connected using the SGMII interface have their own PHYs which
are handled by the struct phylink's phydev field. On the other hand, for
the modules connected using 1000Base-X interface that field is not set.

Since commit ce0aa27ff3 ("sfp: add sfp-bus to bridge between network
devices and sfp cages") phylink_start() ends up setting the phydev field
using the sfp-bus infrastructure, which eventually calls phy_start() on it,
and then calling phy_start() again on the same phydev from phylink_start()
itself. Similar call sequence holds for phylink_stop(), only in the reverse
order. This results in WARNs during network interface bringup and shutdown
when a copper SFP module is connected, as phy_start() and phy_stop() are
called twice in a row for the same phy_device:

Commit 31dd83b966 ("net-next: phy: new Asix Electronics PHY driver")
introduced a new PHY driver drivers/net/phy/asix.c that causes a module
name conflict with a pre-existiting driver (drivers/net/usb/asix.c).

The PHY driver is used by the X-Surf 100 ethernet card driver, and loaded

Ioana Ciornei 44cc27e43f net: phylink: Add struct phylink_config to PHYLINK API
The phylink_config structure will encapsulate a pointer to a struct
device and the operation type requested for this instance of PHYLINK.
This patch does not make any functional changes, it just transitions the
PHYLINK internals and all its users to the new API.

A pointer to a phylink_config structure will be passed to
phylink_create() instead of the net_device directly. Also, the same
phylink_config pointer will be passed back to all phylink_mac_ops
callbacks instead of the net_device. Using this mechanism, a PHYLINK
user can get the original net_device using a structure such as
'to_net_dev(config->dev)' or directly the structure containing the
phylink_config using a container_of call.

At the moment, only the PHYLINK_NETDEV is defined as a valid operation
type for PHYLINK. In this mode, a valid reference to a struct device
linked to the original net_device should be passed to PHYLINK through
the phylink_config structure.

This API changes is mainly driven by the necessity of adding a new
operation type in PHYLINK that disconnects the phy_device from the
net_device and also works when the net_device is lacking.

Trent Piepho c11669a275 net: phy: dp83867: Rework delay rgmii delay handling
The code was assuming the reset default of the delay control register
was to have delay disabled. This is what the datasheet shows as the
register's initial value. However, that's not actually true: the
default is controlled by the PHY's pin strapping.

If the interface mode is selected as RX or TX delay only, insure the
other direction's delay is disabled.

If the interface mode is just "rgmii", with neither TX or RX internal
delay, one might expect that the driver should disable both delays. But
this is not what the driver does. It leaves the setting at the PHY's
strapping's default. And that default, for no pins with strapping
resistors, is to have delay enabled and 2.00 ns.

Rather than change this behavior, I've kept it the same and documented
it. No delay will most likely not work and will break ethernet on any
board using "rgmii" mode. If the board is strapped to have a delay and
is configured to use "rgmii" mode a warning is generated that "rgmii-id"
should have been used.

Also validate the delay values and fail if they are not in range.

Trent Piepho 13c83cf8af net: phy: dp83867: Add ability to disable output clock
Generally, the output clock pin is only used for testing and only serves
as a source of RF noise after this. It could be used to daisy-chain
PHYs, but this is uncommon. Since the PHY can disable the output, make
doing so an option. I do this by adding another enumeration to the
allowed values of ti,clk-output-sel.

The code was not using the value DP83867_CLK_O_SEL_REF_CLK as one might
expect: to select the REF_CLK as the output. Rather it meant "keep
clock output setting as is", which, depending on PHY strapping, might
not be outputting REF_CLK.

Change this so DP83867_CLK_O_SEL_REF_CLK means enable REF_CLK output.
Omitting the property will leave the setting as is (which was the
previous behavior in this case).

Out of range values were silently converted into
DP83867_CLK_O_SEL_REF_CLK. Change this so they generate an error.

Linus Torvalds 2c1212de6f SPDX update for 5.2-rc2, round 1
Here are series of patches that add SPDX tags to different kernel files,
 based on two different things:
   - SPDX entries are added to a bunch of files that we missed a year ago
that do not have any license information at all.

These were either missed because the tool saw the MODULE_LICENSE()
tag, or some EXPORT_SYMBOL tags, and got confused and thought the
file had a real license, or the files have been added since the last
big sweep, or they were Makefile/Kconfig files, which we didn't
     touch last time.

   - Add GPL-2.0-only or GPL-2.0-or-later tags to files where our scan
tools can determine the license text in the file itself. Where this
happens, the license text is removed, in order to cut down on the
700+ different ways we have in the kernel today, in a quest to get
     rid of all of these.

These patches have been out for review on the linux-spdx@vger mailing
list, and while they were created by automatic tools, they were
hand-verified by a bunch of different people, all whom names are on the
 patches are reviewers.

The reason for these "large" patches is if we were to continue to
progress at the current rate of change in the kernel, adding license
tags to individual files in different subsystems, we would be finished
in about 10 years at the earliest.

There will be more series of these types of patches coming over the next
few weeks as the tools and reviewers crunch through the more "odd"
variants of how to say "GPLv2" that developers have come up with over
the years, combined with other fun oddities (GPL + a BSD disclaimer?)
that are being unearthed, with the goal for the whole kernel to be
 cleaned up.

These diffstats are not small, 3840 files are touched, over 10k lines
 removed in just 24 patches.

There are two chip pins named TXDLY and RXDLY which actually adds the 2ns
delays to TXC and RXC for TXD/RXD latching. Alas this is the only
documented info regarding the RGMII timing control configurations the PHY
provides. It turns out the same settings can be setup via MDIO registers
hidden in the extension pages layout. Particularly the extension page 0xa4
provides a register 0x1c, which bits 1 and 2 control the described delays.
They are used to implement the "rgmii-{id,rxid,txid}" phy-mode.

The hidden RGMII configs register utilization was found in the rtl8211e

There is also a freebsd-folks discussion regarding this register:

I got an interesting report [0] that after resuming from hibernation
the link has 100Mbps instead of 1Gbps. Reason is that another OS has
been used whilst Linux was hibernated. And this OS speeds down the link
due to WoL. Therefore, when resuming, we shouldn't expect that what
the PHY advertises is what it did when hibernating.
Easiest way to do this is removing state PHY_RESUMING. Instead always
go via PHY_UP that configures PHY advertisement.

Heiner Kallweit 22c0ef6b14 net: phy: improve pause handling
When probing the phy device we set sym and asym pause in the "supported"
bitmap (unless the PHY tells us otherwise). However we don't know yet
whether the MAC supports pause. Simply copying phy->supported to
phy->advertising will trigger advertising pause, and that's not
what we want. Therefore add phy_advertise_supported() that copies all
modes but doesn't touch the pause bits.

In phy_support_(a)sym_pause we shouldn't set any bits in the supported
bitmap because we may set a bit the PHY intentionally disabled.
Effective pause support should be the AND-combined PHY and MAC pause
capabilities. If the MAC supports everything, then it's only relevant
what the PHY supports. If MAC supports sym pause only, then we have to
clear the asym bit in phydev->supported.
Copy the pause flags only and don't touch the modes, because a driver
may have intentionally removed a mode from phydev->advertising.

So let's also set the autoneg restart bit when resetting. Then PHY
behavior should be more consistent. Clearing BMCR_ISOLATE serves the

BMCR holds the speed / duplex settings in fixed mode. Therefore

The VSC8514 PHY is a 4-ports PHY that is 10/100/1000BASE-T, 100BASE-FX,
1000BASE-X, can communicate with the MAC via QSGMII.
The MAC interface protocol for each port within QSGMII can
be either 1000BASE-X or SGMII, if the QSGMII MAC that the VSC8514 is
connecting to supports this functionality.
VSC8514 also supports SGMII MAC-side autonegotiation on each individual
port, downshifting, can set the blinking pattern of each of its 4 LEDs,
SyncE, 1000BASE-T Ring Resiliency as well as HP Auto-MDIX detection.

This adds support for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T,
QSGMII link with the MAC, downshifting, HP Auto-MDIX detection
and blinking pattern for its 4 LEDs.

The GPIO register bank is a set of registers that are common to all PHYs
in the package. So any modification in any register of this bank affects
all PHYs of the package.

If the PHYs haven't been reset before booting the Linux kernel and were
configured to use interrupts for e.g. link status updates, it is
required to clear the interrupts mask register of all PHYs before being
able to use interrupts with any PHY. The first PHY of the package that
will be init will take care of clearing all PHYs interrupts mask
registers. Thus, we need to keep track of the init sequence in the
package, if it's already been done or if it's to be done.

Most of the init sequence of a PHY of the package is common to all PHYs
in the package, thus we use the SMI broadcast feature which enables us
to propagate a write in one register of one PHY to all PHYs in the same
package.

Heiner Kallweit 5c5f626bca net: phy: improve handling link_change_notify callback
Currently the Phy driver's link_change_notify callback is called
whenever the state machine is run (every second if polling), no matter
whether the state changed or not. This isn't needed and may confuse
users considering the name of the callback. Actually it contradicts
its kernel-doc description. Therefore let's change the behavior and
call this callback only in case of an actual state change.

This requires changes to the at803x and rockchip drivers.
at803x can be simplified so that it reacts on a state change to
PHY_NOLINK only.
The rockchip driver can also be much simplified. We simply re-init
the AFE/DSP registers whenever we change to PHY_RUNNING and speed
is 100Mbps. This causes very small overhead because we do this even
if the speed was 100Mbps already. But this is negligible and
I think justified by the much simpler code.

Changes are compile-tested only.

A little bit problematic seems to be to find somebody with the
hardware to test the changes to the two PHY drivers. See also [0].
David may be able to test the Rockchip driver.

Reason in that state->pause isn't initialized and later only single

Rajasingh Thavamani 232ba3a51c net: phy: Micrel KSZ8061: link failure after cable connect
With Micrel KSZ8061 PHY, the link may occasionally not come up after
Ethernet cable connect. The vendor's (Microchip, former Micrel) errata
sheet 80000688A.pdf descripes the problem and possible workarounds in
detail, see below.
The batch implements workaround 1, which permanently fixes the issue.

DESCRIPTION
Link-up may not occur properly when the Ethernet cable is initially
connected. This issue occurs more commonly when the cable is connected
slowly, but it may occur any time a cable is connected. This issue occurs
in the auto-negotiation circuit, and will not occur if auto-negotiation
is disabled (which requires that the two link partners be set to the
same speed and duplex).

END USER IMPLICATIONS
When this issue occurs, link is not established. Subsequent cable
plug/unplaug cycle will not correct the issue.

WORk AROUND
There are four approaches to work around this issue:
1. This issue can be prevented by setting bit 15 in MMD device address 1,
register 2, prior to connecting the cable or prior to setting the
Restart Auto-negotiation bit in register 0h. The MMD registers are
accessed via the indirect access registers Dh and Eh, or via the Micrel
   EthUtil utility as shown here:
. if using the EthUtil utility (usually with a Micrel KSZ8061
Evaluation Board), type the following commands:
     > address 1
     > mmd 1
     > iw 2 b61a
. Alternatively, write the following registers to write to the
     indirect MMD register:
     Write register Dh, data 0001h
     Write register Eh, data 0002h
     Write register Dh, data 4001h
     Write register Eh, data B61Ah
2. The issue can be avoided by disabling auto-negotiation in the KSZ8061,
either by the strapping option, or by clearing bit 12 in register 0h.
Care must be taken to ensure that the KSZ8061 and the link partner
will link with the same speed and duplex. Note that the KSZ8061
defaults to full-duplex when auto-negotiation is off, but other
devices may default to half-duplex in the event of failed
   auto-negotiation.
3. The issue can be avoided by connecting the cable prior to powering-up
or resetting the KSZ8061, and leaving it plugged in thereafter.
4. If the above measures are not taken and the problem occurs, link can
be recovered by setting the Restart Auto-Negotiation bit in
register 0h, or by resetting or power cycling the device. Reset may
be either hardware reset or software reset (register 0h, bit 15).

PLAN
This errata will not be corrected in the future revision.

The current code reports a link as up if all devices (except a few

There may be more PHYs where depending on the mode the link status

Linus Walleij 4c8e0459b5 net: phy: realtek: Dummy IRQ calls for RTL8366RB
This fixes a regression introduced by
commit 0d2e778e38
"net: phy: replace PHY_HAS_INTERRUPT with a check for
config_intr and ack_interrupt".

This assumes that a PHY cannot trigger interrupt unless
it has .config_intr() or .ack_interrupt() implemented.
A later patch makes the code assume both need to be
implemented for interrupts to be present.

But this PHY (which is inside a DSA) will happily
fire interrupts without either callback.

Implement dummy callbacks for .config_intr() and
.ack_interrupt() in the phy header to fix this.

Tested on the RTL8366RB on D-Link DIR-685.

Fix this by handling interrupts the same as in phy_mac_interrupt(),

These mode integrate with the already defined C45 MDIO PMA/PMD registers

This commit adds the required definitions in include/uapi/linux/mdio.h

Andrew Lunn efbdfdc29b net: phy: Add support for asking the PHY its abilities
Add support for runtime determination of what the PHY supports, by
adding a new function to the phy driver. The get_features call should
set the phydev->supported member with the features the PHY supports.
It is only called if phydrv->features is NULL.

This requires minor changes to pause. The PHY driver should not set
pause abilities, except for when it has odd cause capabilities, e.g.
pause cannot be disabled. With this change, phydev->supported already
contains the drivers abilities, including pause. So rather than
considering phydrv->features, look at the phydev->supported, and
enable pause if neither of the pause bits are already set.

Heiner Kallweit 93c0970493 net: phy: consider latched link-down status in polling mode
The link status value latches link-down events. To get the current
status we read the register twice in genphy_update_link(). There's
a potential risk that we miss a link-down event in polling mode.
This may cause issues if the user e.g. connects his machine to a
different network.

On the other hand reading the latched value may cause issues in
interrupt mode. Following scenario:

- After boot link goes up
- phy_start() is called triggering an aneg restart, hence link goes
down and link-down info is latched.
- After aneg has finished link goes up and triggers an interrupt.
Interrupt handler reads link status, means it reads the latched
"link is down" info. But there won't be another interrupt as long
as link stays up, therefore phylib will never recognize that link
  is up.

Deal with both scenarios by reading the register twice in interrupt
mode only.

Russell King b5bfc21af5 net: sfp: do not probe SFP module before we're attached
When we probe a SFP module, we expect to be able to call the upstream
device's module_insert() function so that the upstream link can be
configured. However, when the upstream device is delayed, we currently
may end up probing the module before the upstream device is available,
and lose the module_insert() call.

Avoid this by holding off probing the module until the SFP bus is
properly connected to both the SFP socket driver and the upstream
driver.

Heiner Kallweit 998a8a8387 net: phy: let genphy_c45_read_link manage the devices to check
Let genphy_c45_read_link manage the devices to check, this removes
overhead from callers. Add C22EXT to the list of excluded devices
because it doesn't implement the status register. According to the
802.3 clause 45 spec registers 29.0 - 29.4 are reserved.

At the moment we have very few clause 45 PHY drivers, so we are
lacking experience whether other drivers will have to exclude further
devices, or may need to check PHY XS. If we should figure out that
list of devices to check needs to be configurable, I think best will
be to add a device list member to struct phy_driver.

Any new users should create a proper device and pass the

In fixed phy_register(), investigate the "fixed-link"

Sebastian Andrzej Siewior 53bc8d2af0 net: dp83640: expire old TX-skb
During sendmsg() a cloned skb is saved via dp83640_txtstamp() in
->tx_queue. After the NIC sends this packet, the PHY will reply with a
timestamp for that TX packet. If the cable is pulled at the right time I
don't see that packet. It might gets flushed as part of queue shutdown
on NIC's side.
Once the link is up again then after the next sendmsg() we enqueue
another skb in dp83640_txtstamp() and have two on the list. Then the PHY
will send a reply and decode_txts() attaches it to the first skb on the
list.
No crash occurs since refcounting works but we are one packet behind.
linuxptp/ptp4l usually closes the socket and opens a new one (in such a
timeout case) so those "stale" replies never get there. However it does
not resume normal operation anymore.

Purge old skbs in decode_txts().
