Mike Rapoport 350e88bad4 mm: memblock: make keeping memblock memory opt-in rather than opt-out
Most architectures do not need the memblock memory after the page
allocator is initialized, but only few enable ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK in the
arch Kconfig.

Replacing ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK with ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK and inverting the
logic makes it clear which architectures actually use memblock after
system initialization and skips the necessity to add ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK
to the architectures that are still missing that option.

Alexander Duyck 837566e7e0 mm: implement new zone specific memblock iterator
Introduce a new iterator for_each_free_mem_pfn_range_in_zone.

This iterator will take care of making sure a given memory range provided
is in fact contained within a zone. It takes are of all the bounds
checking we were doing in deferred_grow_zone, and deferred_init_memmap.
In addition it should help to speed up the search a bit by iterating until
the end of a range is greater than the start of the zone pfn range, and
will exit completely if the start is beyond the end of the zone.

Merge tag 'printk-for-5.2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pmladek/printk

Pull printk updates from Petr Mladek:

 - Allow state reset of printk_once() calls.

 - Prevent crashes when dereferencing invalid pointers in vsprintf().
   Only the first byte is checked for simplicity.

 - Make vsprintf warnings consistent and inlined.

 - Treewide conversion of obsolete %pf, %pF to %ps, %pF printf
   modifiers.

 - Some clean up of vsprintf and test_printf code.

* tag 'printk-for-5.2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pmladek/printk:

specifiers. The former are deprecated, therefore switch the current users
to use the preferred variant.

The changes have been produced by the following command:

	git grep -l '%p[fF]' | grep -v '^\(tools\|Documentation\)/' | \
	while read i; do perl -i -pe 's/%pf/%ps/g; s/%pF/%pS/g;' $i; done

The memblock API provides dedicated helpers to set or clear a flag on a
memory region, e.g.  memblock_{mark,clear}_hotplug().

The memblock_{set,clear}_region_flags() functions are used only by the
memblock internal function that adjusts the region flags. Drop these
functions and use open-coded implementation instead.

Mike Rapoport 92d12f9544 memblock: refactor internal allocation functions
Currently, memblock has several internal functions with overlapping
functionality. They all call memblock_find_in_range_node() to find free
memory and then reserve the allocated range and mark it with kmemleak.
However, there is difference in the allocation constraints and in
fallback strategies.

The allocations returning physical address first attempt to find free
memory on the specified node within mirrored memory regions, then retry
on the same node without the requirement for memory mirroring and
finally fall back to all available memory.

The allocations returning virtual address start with clamping the
allowed range to memblock.current_limit, attempt to allocate from the
specified node from regions with mirroring and with user defined minimal
address. If such allocation fails, next attempt is done with node
restriction lifted. Next, the allocation is retried with minimal
address reset to zero and at last without the requirement for mirrored
regions.

Let's consolidate various fallbacks handling and make them more
consistent for physical and virtual variants. Most of the fallback
handling is moved to memblock_alloc_range_nid() and it now handles node
and mirror fallbacks.

The memblock_alloc_internal() uses memblock_alloc_range_nid() to get a
physical address of the allocated range and converts it to virtual
address.

The fallback for allocation below the specified minimal address remains
in memblock_alloc_internal() because memblock_alloc_range_nid() is used
by CMA with exact requirement for lower bounds.

The memblock_phys_alloc_nid() function is completely dropped as it is not
used anywhere outside memblock and its only usage can be replaced by a
call to memblock_alloc_range_nid().

of this parameter, the __memblock_alloc_base() can is replaced with the
appropriate memblock_phys_alloc*() variant.

Mike Rapoport 337555744e memblock: memblock_phys_alloc_try_nid(): don't panic
The memblock_phys_alloc_try_nid() function tries to allocate memory from
the requested node and then falls back to allocation from any node in

memblock_alloc_range_nid() and update the memblock_phys_alloc_try_nid()

Ard Biesheuvel 8a5b403d71 arm64, mm, efi: Account for GICv3 LPI tables in static memblock reserve table
In the irqchip and EFI code, we have what basically amounts to a quirk
to work around a peculiarity in the GICv3 architecture, which permits
the system memory address of LPI tables to be programmable only once
after a CPU reset. This means kexec kernels must use the same memory
as the first kernel, and thus ensure that this memory has not been
given out for other purposes by the time the ITS init code runs, which
is not very early for secondary CPUs.

On systems with many CPUs, these reservations could overflow the
memblock reservation table, and this was addressed in commit:

  eff8962888 ("efi/arm: Defer persistent reservations until after paging_init()")

However, this turns out to have made things worse, since the allocation
of page tables and heap space for the resized memblock reservation table
itself may overwrite the regions we are attempting to reserve, which may
cause all kinds of corruption, also considering that the ITS will still
be poking bits into that memory in response to incoming MSIs.

So instead, let's grow the static memblock reservation table on such
systems so it can accommodate these reservations at an earlier time.
This will permit us to revert the above commit in a subsequent patch.

Mike Rapoport 7e1c4e2792 memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTES
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment
is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES.

Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can
come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even
when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of
clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise.

Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter
explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment
in the memblock internal allocation functions.

For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like
iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with
Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where
appropriate.

The direct memblock APIs users were updated using the semantic patch below:

Alexander Duyck f682a97a00 mm: provide kernel parameter to allow disabling page init poisoning
Patch series "Address issues slowing persistent memory initialization", v5.

The main thing this patch set achieves is that it allows us to initialize
each node worth of persistent memory independently. As a result we reduce
page init time by about 2 minutes because instead of taking 30 to 40
seconds per node and going through each node one at a time, we process all
4 nodes in parallel in the case of a 12TB persistent memory setup spread
evenly over 4 nodes.

This patch (of 3):

On systems with a large amount of memory it can take a significant amount
of time to initialize all of the page structs with the PAGE_POISON_PATTERN
value. I have seen it take over 2 minutes to initialize a system with
over 12TB of RAM.

In order to work around the issue I had to disable CONFIG_DEBUG_VM and
then the boot time returned to something much more reasonable as the
arch_add_memory call completed in milliseconds versus seconds. However in
doing that I had to disable all of the other VM debugging on the system.

In order to work around a kernel that might have CONFIG_DEBUG_VM enabled
on a system that has a large amount of memory I have added a new kernel
parameter named "vm_debug" that can be set to "-" in order to disable it.

Mike Rapoport a36aab890c mm/memblock.c: replace u64 with phys_addr_t where appropriate
Most functions in memblock already use phys_addr_t to represent a

This patch replaces u64 with phys_addr_t in __memblock_free_late() and
switches several format strings from %llx to %pa to avoid casting from
phys_addr_t to u64.

Mathieu Malaterre 1937367205 mm/memblock: add missing include <linux/bootmem.h>
Commit 26f09e9b3a ("mm/memblock: add memblock memory allocation apis")
introduced two new function definitions:

  memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_nopanic()
  memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid()

and commit ea1f5f3712 ("mm: define memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_raw")
introduced the following function definition:

  memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_raw()

This commit adds an include of header file <linux/bootmem.h> to provide
the missing function prototypes. This silences the following gcc warning
(W=1):

  mm/memblock.c:1334:15: warning: no previous prototype for `memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_raw' [-Wmissing-prototypes]
  mm/memblock.c:1371:15: warning: no previous prototype for `memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_nopanic' [-Wmissing-prototypes]
  mm/memblock.c:1407:15: warning: no previous prototype for `memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid' [-Wmissing-prototypes]

Also adds #ifdef blockers to prevent compilation failure on mips/ia64
where CONFIG_NO_BOOTMEM=n as could be seen in commit commit 6cc22dc08a
("revert "mm/memblock: add missing include <linux/bootmem.h>"").

Because Makefile already does:

  obj-$(CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK) += memblock.o

The #ifdef has been simplified from:

  #if defined(CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK) && defined(CONFIG_NO_BOOTMEM)

to simply:

  #if defined(CONFIG_NO_BOOTMEM)

The warning is basically saying that a top-down allocation can break
memory hotremove because memblock allocation is not movable. But m68k
doesn't even support MEMORY_HOTREMOVE so there is no point to warn about
it.

Make the warning conditional only to configurations that care.

Andrew Morton 6cc22dc08a revert "mm/memblock: add missing include <linux/bootmem.h>"
The patch fixed a W=1 warning but broke the ia64 build:

    CC      mm/memblock.o
  mm/memblock.c:1340: error: redefinition of `memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_raw'
  ./include/linux/bootmem.h:335: error: previous definition of `memblock_virt_alloc_try_nid_raw' was here

Because inlcude/linux/bootmem.h says

	#if defined(CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK) && defined(CONFIG_NO_BOOTMEM)

whereas mm/Makefile says

	obj-$(CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK) += memblock.o

So revert 26f09e9b3a ("mm/memblock: add missing include
<linux/bootmem.h>") while a full fix can be worked on.
