Sonic Zhang 35ff693579 Blackfin Serial Driver: handle irregular DMA register status in auto start mode
This bug is caused by irregular behavior of DMA register CURR_X_COUNT
and CURR_Y_COUNT when an auto restart uart rx DMA run to last byte in
DMA buffer, trigger the interrupt and stay at this possiton. The status
of current x and y is 0:7 instead of 512:8 or 0:8. The driver doesn't
take care of this case when calculating the position.

Graf Yang f9d36da9cd Blackfin Serial Driver: fix missing new lines when under load
Add a SSYNC() into bfin_serial_dma_tx_chars() to ensure DMA registers are
written with new data otherwise we might miss a byte or two when the
system is under load. PIO mode is OK though.

Robin Getz 7de7c55bf5 Blackfin Serial Driver: fix baudrate for early_printk
Since we already setup the early console UART in
arch/blackfin/kernel/early_printk.c, and common functions which are
enabled from the .setup will override the proper settings later, don't
fill in these structures. Otherwise we get mangled baudrate settings when
using early_printk.

Michael Hennerich a19e8b2059 Blackfin SPORT UART: fix data misses while using transmit frame sync
SPORT transmit frame sync (TFS) isn't used as an electrical signal during
normal SPORT UART emulation. However, it is useful in EIA RS-485
emulation as RS-485 Transceiver Driver Enable DE strobe.

This patch configures:
TFS to be active high in order to drive an DE strobe of
an eventually connected RS-485 Transceiver.

Linus Walleij dc890c2dcd [ARM] 5544/1: Trust PrimeCell resource sizes
I found the PrimeCell/AMBA Bus drivers distrusting the resource
passed in as part of the struct amba_device abstraction. This
patch removes all hard coded resource sizes found in the PrimeCell
drivers and move the responsibility of this definition back to
the platform/board device definition, which already exist and
appear to be correct for all in-tree users of these drivers.
We do this using the resource_size() inline function which was
also replicated in the only driver using the resource size, so
that has been changed too. The KMI_SIZE was left in kmi.h in case
someone likes it. Test-compiled against Versatile and Integrator
defconfigs, seems to work but I don't posess these boards and
cannot test them.

Alan Cox b8e7e40abe 8250: Fix oops from setserial
If you setserial a port which has never been initialised we change the type
but don't update the I/O method pointers. The same problem is true if you
change the io type of a port - but nobody ever does that so nobody noticed!

Remember the old type and when attaching if the type has changed reload the
port accessor pointers. We can't do it blindly as some 8250 drivers load custom
accessors and we must not stomp those.

Paul Mundt 0fb849b9d7 sh: Integrate the SH-5 onchip_remap() more coherently.
Presently this is special-cased for early initialization. While there are
situations where these static early initializations are still necessary,
with minor changes it is possible to use this for the regular ioremap
implementation as well. This allows us to kill off the special-casing for
the remap completely and to start tidying up all of the SH-5
special-casing in drivers.

Jesper Nilsson 9e040a3e91 CRISv10: fix serial driver proc-usage

Rework the proc handling in the CRISv10 serial driver to use proc_fops

Mark Brown 41609ff430 [ARM] 5449/1: S3C: Use disable_irq_nosync() to fix boot lockups
With 2.6.30-rc1 on SMDK6410 I experience a soft lockup on bootup when
the Samsung serial driver attempts to disable the transmit interrupt
from within the transmit interrupt handler: it calls disable_irq()
which locks up due to attempting to synchronise with the running handler.
Fix this by using disable_irq_nosync().

Also make the same change in the recieve path.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt f08b7e9f55 powerpc/pmac: Fix internal modem IRQ on Wallstreet PowerBook
The (relatively) new pmac_zilog driver doesn't use the pre-munged
IRQ numbers from the macio_dev unlike other macio things, it
directly maps it off the OF device-tree.

It does that because it can be initialized much earlier than the
registration of the macio devices, in order to get a serial
console early.

Unfortunately, that means that it "misses" some fixups done
by the macio layer to work around missing interrupt descriptions
in the device-tree of the Wallstreet machines.

This patch brings the necessary workaround into the pmac_zilog
driver itself to bring it back to working condition.

Mauro Carvalho Chehab b6adea334c 8250: fix boot hang with serial console when using with Serial Over Lan port
Intel 8257x Ethernet boards have a feature called Serial Over Lan.

This feature works by emulating a serial port, and it is detected by
kernel as a normal 8250 port. However, this emulation is not perfect, as
also noticed on changeset 7500b1f602.

Before this patch, the kernel were trying to check if the serial TX is
capable of work using IRQ's.

This were done with a code similar this:

        serial_outp(up, UART_IER, UART_IER_THRI);
        lsr = serial_in(up, UART_LSR);
        iir = serial_in(up, UART_IIR);
        serial_outp(up, UART_IER, 0);

        if (lsr & UART_LSR_TEMT && iir & UART_IIR_NO_INT)
		up->bugs |= UART_BUG_TXEN;

This works fine for other 8250 ports, but, on 8250-emulated SoL port, the
chip is a little lazy to down UART_IIR_NO_INT at UART_IIR register.

Due to that, UART_BUG_TXEN is sometimes enabled. However, as TX IRQ keeps
working, and the TX polling is now enabled, the driver miss-interprets the
IRQ received later, hanging up the machine until a key is pressed at the
serial console.

This is the 6 version of this patch. Previous versions were trying to
introduce a large enough delay between serial_outp and serial_in(up,
UART_IIR), but not taking forever. However, the needed delay couldn't be
safely determined.

At the experimental tests, a delay of 1us solves most of the cases, but
still hangs sometimes. Increasing the delay to 5us was better, but still
doesn't solve. A very high delay of 50 ms seemed to work every time.

However, poking around with delays and pray for it to be enough doesn't
seem to be a good approach, even for a quirk.

So, instead of playing with random large arbitrary delays, let's just
disable UART_BUG_TXEN for all SoL ports.

Atsushi Nemoto 27c0c8e511 atmel_serial might lose modem status change
I found a problem of handling of modem status of atmel_serial driver.

With the commit 1ecc26 ("atmel_serial: split the interrupt handler"),
handling of modem status signal was splitted into two parts. The
atmel_tasklet_func() compares new status with irq_status_prev, but
irq_status_prev is not correct if signal status was changed while the port
is closed.

Here is a sequence to cause problem:

1. Remote side sets CTS (and DSR).
2. Local side close the port.
3. Local side clears RTS and DTR.
4. Remote side clears CTS and DSR.
5. Local side reopen the port. hw_stopped becomes 1.
6. Local side sets RTS and DTR.
7. Remote side sets CTS and DSR.

Then CTS change interrupt can be received, but since CTS bit in
irq_status_prev and new status is same, uart_handle_cts_change() will not
be called (so hw_stopped will not be cleared, i.e. cannot send any data).

I suppose irq_status_prev should be initialized at somewhere in open
sequence.

Itai Levi pointed out that we need to initialize atmel_port->irq_status
as well here. His analysis is as follows:

> Regarding the second part of the patch (which resets irq_status_prev),
> it turns out that both versions of the patch (mine and Atsushi's)
> still leave enough room for faulty behavior when opening the port.
>
> This is because we are not resetting both irq_status_prev and
> irq_status in atmel_startup() to CSR, which leads faulty behavior in
> the following sequences:
>
> First case:
> 1. closing the port while CTS line = 1 (TX not allowed)
> 2. setting CTS line = 0 (TX allowed)

>
> Second case:
> 1. closing the port while CTS line = 0 (TX allowed)
> 2. setting CTS line = 1 (TX not allowed)
> 3. opening the port
> 4. receiving some chars

>
> This reason for this is that the tasklet is scheduled as a result of

There is no reason for the PSC UART driver or the Ethernet driver
to require a device_type property. The compatible value is sufficient
to uniquely identify the device. Remove it from the driver.

The whole 'port-number' scheme for assigning numbers to PSC uarts was
always rather half baked and just adds complexity. Remove it from the
driver. After this patch is applied, PSC UART numbers are simply
assigned from the order they are found in the device tree (just like
all the other devices). Userspace can query sysfs to determine what
ttyPSC number is assigned to each PSC instance.

Mischa Jonker cd1e40f098 When a break signal is detected, the next character should be ignored.
This was not implemented correctly for the pnx8xxx_uart driver.

[From further discussion:
Correct, you can look to it as two separate bugs:
a) the next character is not ignored while it should;
b) the status bits 31-8 are copied to the 'ch' variable while they shouldn't.

Both bugs prevent correct break signal handling (and therefore correct
behaviour of the magic SysRq key). Bug b didn't cause too much trouble
earlier because in most situations the status bits are all zero; for
this case they unfortunately aren't.

Helge Deller 125c97d8a5 fix early_serial_setup() regression
Commit b430428a18 ("8250: Don't clobber
spinlocks.") introduced a regression on the parisc architecture, which
broke the handover to the serial port at boottime.

early_serial_setup() was changed to only copy a subset of the uart_port
fields, and sadly the "type" and "line" fields were forgotten and thus
the serial port was not initialized and could not be used for a
handover. This patch fixes this by copying the missing fields.

As this change to early_serial_setup() doesn't need an initialized
spinlock in the uart_port struct any longer, we can drop the spinlock
initialization in the superio driver.

David Daney 8e23fcc89c Serial: Allow port type to be specified when calling serial8250_register_port.
Add flag value UPF_FIXED_TYPE which specifies that the UART type is
known and should not be probed. For this case the UARTs properties
are just copied out of the uart_config entry.

This allows us to keep SOC specific 8250 probe code out of 8250.c. In
this case we know the serial hardware will not be changing as it is on
the same silicon as the CPU, and we can specify it with certainty in
the board/cpu setup code.

The alternative is to load up 8250.c with a bunch of OCTEON specific
special cases in the probing code.

In order to use Cavium OCTEON specific serial i/o drivers, we first
patch the 8250 driver to use replaceable I/O functions. Compatible
I/O functions are added for existing iotypeS.

An added benefit of this change is that it makes it easy to factor
some of the existing special cases out to board/SOC specific support
code.

Move the tty_port and uart_info bits around a little. By embedding the uart_info
into the uart_port we get rid of lots of corner case testing and also get the
ability to go port<->state<->info which is a bit more elegant than the current
data structures.

Downsides - we allocate a tiny bit more memory for unused ports, upside we've
removed as much code as it saved for most users..

it is the time that blackfin stoped receiving, the time is random.

The related register bit is OK, the other devices is sending data continuously.

I tried Michael's suggestion that request the UARTx error interrupt, and reset

Paul Mundt 272966c070 serial: sh-sci: Reorder the SCxTDR write after the TDxE clear.
Under qemu there is a race between the TDxE read-and-clear and the SCxTDR
write. While on hardware it can be gauranteed that the read-and-clear

hardware itself doesn't care about the ordering, move the SCxTDR write
until after the read-and-clear.

David Brownell 06a7f05876 atmel_serial: keep clock off when it's not needed
The atmel_serial driver is mismanaging its clock by leaving it on at all
times ... the whole point of clock management is to leave it off unless
it's actively needed, which conserves power!!

Although the kernel doesn't actually hang without my fix, it does
discard quite a lot of early console output.

The result still looks correct:

          usart users= 1 on 35000000 Hz, for atmel_usart.0
          usart users= 0 off 35000000 Hz, for atmel_usart.2

This merges branches irq/genirq, irq/sparseirq-v4, timers/hpet-percpu

The sparseirq branch is just preliminary groundwork: no sparse IRQs are
actually implemented by this tree anymore - just the new APIs are added
while keeping the old way intact as well (the new APIs map 1:1 to
irq_desc[]). The 'real' sparse IRQ support will then be a relatively
small patch ontop of this - with a v2.6.29 merge target.

David Miller b70ac77185 serial: allow 8250 to be used on sparc
This requires three changes:

1) Remove !SPARC restriction in Kconfig.

2) Move Sparc specific serial drivers before 8250, so that serial
console devices don't change names on us, even if 8250 finds
   devices.

3) Since the Sparc specific serial drivers try to use the
same major/minor device namespace as 8250, some coordination
is necessary. Use the sunserial_*() layer routines to allocate
minor number space within TTY_MAJOR when CONFIG_SPARC.

This has no effect on other platforms.

Paul Mundt a2159b5221 serial: sh-sci: Dynamic clock management depends on HAVE_CLK.
Presently this is conditionalized on sh, and disabled for sh64.
Now that SH-5 ties in to the clock framework, the sh64 exception

once SH-Mobile G3 grows clock framework support, so switch these
paths over to HAVE_CLK now.

Once the H8 and ARM sh-sci users hook up HAVE_CLK, the driver can
be switched over to having an outright dependency on it and the

Anti Sullin f05596dbc9 atmel_serial: update the powersave handler to match serial core
This problem seems to be unnoticed so far:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=b3b708fa2780cd2b5d8266a8f0c3a1cab364d4d2

has changed the serial core behavior to not to suspend the port if the
device is enabled as a wakeup source. If the AT91 system goes to slow
clock mode, the port should be suspended always and the clocks should be
switched off. The patch attached updates the atmel_serial driver to match
the changes in serial core.

Also, the interrupts are disabled when the clock is disabled. If we
disable the clock with interrupts enabled, an interrupt may get stuck. If
this is the DBGU interrupt, this blocks the OR logic at system controller
and thus all other sysc interrupts.

Will Newton 363f66fe06 8250: improve workaround for UARTs that don't re-assert THRE correctly
Recent changes to tighten the check for UARTs that don't correctly
re-assert THRE (01c194d9278efc15d4785ff205643e9c0bdcef53: "serial 8250:
tighten test for using backup timer") caused problems when such a UART was
opened for the second time - the bug could only successfully be detected
at first initialization. For users of this version of this particular
UART IP it is fatal.

This patch stores the information about the bug in the bugs field of the
port structure when the port is first started up so subsequent opens can
check this bit even if the test for the bug fails.

David Brownell: "My own exposure to this is that the UART on DaVinci
hardware, which TI allegedly derived from its original 16550 logic, has
periodically gone from working to unusable with the mainline 8250.c ...
and back and forth a bunch. Currently it's "unusable", a regression from
some previous versions. With this patch from Will, it's usable."

Maciej W. Rozycki e9a8f4d1de serial: DZ11: avoid a hang at console switch-over
Changes to the generic console support code that happened a while ago
introduced a scenario where the initial console is used in parallel with
the final console during a brief period when switching between the two is
in progress. During that time a message about the switch-over is printed.

With some combinations of chips, firmware and drivers, such as the DEC

firmware used for the initial console may not expect the state of the chip
after it has been initialised by the driver.

This is a workaround for the DZ11 which reuses the power-management

Adrian Bunk f606ddf42f remove the v850 port
Trying to compile the v850 port brings many compile errors, one of them exists
since at least kernel 2.6.19.

There also seems to be noone willing to bring this port back into a usable
state.

This patch therefore removes the v850 port.

If anyone ever decides to revive the v850 port the code will still be
available from older kernels, and it wouldn't be impossible for the port to
reenter the kernel if it would become actively maintained again.

Anton Vorontsov 768aec0b5b serial: 8250: fix shared interrupts issues with SMP and RT kernels
With SMP kernels _irqsave spinlock disables only local interrupts, while
the shared serial interrupt could be assigned to the CPU that is not
currently starting up the serial port.

This might cause issues because serial8250_startup() routine issues
IRQ-triggering operations before registering the port in the IRQ chain
(though, this is fine to do and done explicitly because we don't want to
process any interrupts on the port startup).

With RT kernels and preemptable hardirqs, _irqsave spinlock does not
disable local hardirqs, and the bug could be reproduced much easily:

$ cat /dev/ttyS0 &
$ cat /dev/ttyS1
irq 42: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
Call Trace:

handlers:
[<c02112c4>] (serial8250_interrupt+0x0/0x138)
Disabling IRQ #42

After this, all serial ports on the given IRQ are non-functional.

To fix the issue we should explicitly disable shared IRQ before
issuing any IRQ-triggering operations.

I also changed spin_lock_irqsave to the ordinary spin_lock, since it
seems to be safe: chain does not contain new port (yet), thus nobody
will interfere us from the ISRs.

Haavard Skinnemoen 6bb0e3a59a Subject: [PATCH 1/2] serial: Add flush_buffer() operation to uart_ops
Serial drivers using DMA (like the atmel_serial driver) tend to get very
confused when the xmit buffer is flushed and nobody told them. They
also tend to spew a lot of garbage since the DMA engine keeps running
after the buffer is flushed and possibly refilled with unrelated data.

This patch adds a new flush_buffer operation to the uart_ops struct,
along with a call to it from uart_flush_buffer() right after the xmit
buffer has been cleared. The driver can implement this in order to
syncronize its internal DMA state with the xmit buffer when the buffer
is flushed.

Bjorn Helgaas 57fd51a8be PNP: add pnp_possible_config() -- can a device could be configured this way?
As part of a heuristic to identify modem devices, 8250_pnp.c
checks to see whether a device can be configured at any of the
legacy COM port addresses.

This patch moves the code that traverses the PNP "possible resource

is important because a future patch will change the implementation
of those resource options.

Haavard Skinnemoen 9c81c5c95c atmel_serial: filter out FP during baud rate detection
I made a change to u-boot that used the FP (Fractional Part) field of BRGR
to achieve more accurate baud rate generation. Unfortunately, the
atmel_serial driver looks at the whole BRGR register when trying to detect
the baud rate that the port is currently running at, so setting FP to a
nonzero value breaks the baud rate detection.

I'll sit on the u-boot patch for a while longer, but this is clearly a
bug in the atmel_serial driver which should be fixed.

^^ The board is using ucc_uart.c and 8250.c, both registered as

This patch fixes two drivers that are using "serial" for driver_name and
not "ttyS" for dev_name. Drivers that are using "ttyS" for dev_name, will
conflict anyway, so we don't bother with these.

Linus Torvalds edeb280e49 Fix uart_set_ldisc() function type
Commit 64e9159f5d ("serial_core:
uart_set_ldisc infrastructure") introduced the ability for low-level
serial drivers to be informed when the tty ldisc changes.

However, the actual tty-layer function that does this callback for
serial devices was declared with the wrong type, having a spurious and
unused 'ldisc' argument.

This fixed the resulting compiler warning by just removing it.

Alan Cox 64e9159f5d serial_core: uart_set_ldisc infrastructure
The tty layer provides a callback that is used when the line discipline
is changed. Some hardware uses this to configure hardware specific
features such as IrDA mode on serial ports. Unfortunately the serial
layer does not provide this feature or pass it down to drivers.

Blackfin used to hack around this by rewriting the tty ops, but those are
now properly shared and const so the hack fails. Instead provide the
proper operations.

This change plus a follow up from the Blackfin guys is needed to avoid
blackfin losing features in this release.

Andrew Liu fbe543b412 Fix a potential issue in mpc52xx uart driver
mpc52xx_uart_int and __uart_put_char both try to acquire the
port->lock. Therefore the function sequence of:

mpc52xx_uart_int--> ...-->flush_to_ldisc-->...-->__uart_put_char

can potentially trigger a deadlock. To avoid this deadlock a fix
similar to that found in the 8250.c serial driver is applied. The
deadlock is avoided by releasing the lock before pushing a buffer
and reacquiring it when completed.

Alan Cox f34d7a5b70 tty: The big operations rework
- Operations are now a shared const function block as with most other Linux
  objects

- Introduce wrappers for some optional functions to get consistent behaviour

- Wrap put_char which used to be patched by the tty layer

- Document which functions are needed/optional

- Make put_char report success/fail

- Cache the driver->ops pointer in the tty as tty->ops

- Remove various surplus lock calls we no longer need

- Remove proc_write method as noted by Alexey Dobriyan

- Introduce some missing sanity checks where certain driver/ldisc
combinations would oops as they didn't check needed methods were present

Alan Cox 978e595f88 tty/serial: lay the foundations for the next set of reworks
- Stop drivers calling their own flush method indirectly, it obfuscates code
and it will change soon anyway

- A few more lock_kernel paths temporarily needed in some driver internal
  waiting code

- Remove private put_char method that does a write call for one char - we
  have that anyway

- Most but not yet all of the termios copy under lock fixing (some has other
  dependencies to follow)

- Note a few locking bugs in drivers found in the process

- Kill remaining [ab]users of TIOCG/SSOFTCAR in the driver, these must go to
  fix the termios locking

Alan Cox e523844260 serial_core: Prepare for BKL push down
Instead of checking for the BKL in these methods, take it ourselves. That
avoids propogating it into the serial drivers and we can then fix them later
on.
