The CLOCKSOURCE_OF_DECLARE lines were added without a semicolon at the
end. On my system this causes a compile-time error that looks like:

than with its previous initcall level, module init.
This came up as a problem with using CMT as a clock source kzm9g-reference
which does not make use of early timers or devices. In that scenario
initialisation of SDHI and MMCIF both stall on msleep() calls due to the
absence of a initialised clock source.
The purpose of this change is to keep the MTU2 code in sync with the CMT code
which has been modified in a similar manner..
Compile tested only using se7206_defconfig.
I do not believe I have any boards that support the MTU2.

Update hardware register access code for CMSTR and CMCSR
from using sh_cmt_read() and sh_cmt_write() to make use
of 16-bit register access functions such as sh_cmt_read16()
and sh_cmt_write16(). Also update sh_cmt_read() and
sh_cmt_write() now when the special cases are gone.
This patch moves us one step closer to the goal of separating
counter register access functions from control control register
functions.

The new clockframework introduced DT IDs for each clock. To be able to remove
the device registrations, this driver needs to be updated to use the DT IDs.

In cases where we have multiple nodes of the same type, we may need the
node pointer to know which node was matched. Passing the node pointer
also keeps the init function from having to match the node a 2nd time.
Update bcm2835, vt8500, and tegra20 init functions for the new function
prototype. Further tegra20 clean-ups are in follow-up commit.

Add time keeping code for metag. Meta hardware threads have 2 timers.
The background timer (TXTIMER) is used as a free-running time base, and
the interrupt timer (TXTIMERI) is used for the timer interrupt. Both
counters traditionally count at approximately 1MHz.

This series contains changes for the Marvell EBU platforms (mvebu,
orion, kirkwood, dove) that were not part of the first set of pull
requests because of dependencies on the MMC tree, and being submitted
a little late.
Notable changes are:
* More devices get moved out of board files into device tree
descriptions. The remaining devices listed in there have patches
that will get sent for 3.10, after which we can remove a lot of the
board files entirely. We are doing the pinctrl and mmc drivers here,
ethernet and PCI still remain.
* SMP support for mvebu is improved with support for the
local interrupt controller.
* The Guruplug board file gets replaced with a DT description.
Unfortunately, the dependency on the MMC tree turned out to be a much
larger problem than expected, when the MMC maintainer rebased the patches
in his tree that all of the patches in this branch are based on, which
caused merge conflicts between the new and old versions of those patches.
To work around the merge conflicts, this branch rebases all patches
on top of the respective MMC patches that did get merged into 3.9.
The patches are all identical to the versions that were part of
linux-next, but have a new commit date.
Merge conflicts:
* in board-nsa310.c, the gpio.h inclusion was removed prematurely and
put back as a bug fix earlier. With this series it is really not needed
any more.
* The patch to add rtc support was already applied by Andrew Morton,

On the SOCs Armada 370 and Armada XP, each CPU comes with two private
timers. This patch use the timer 0 of each CPU as local timer for the

This contains parts of the ARM KVM support that have dependencies on
other patches merged through the arm-soc tree. In combination with
patches coming through Russell's tree, this will finally add full
support for the kernel based virtual machine on ARM, which has
been awaited for some time now.
Further, we now have a separate platform for virtual machines
and qemu booting that is used by both Xen and KVM, separating
these from the Versatile Express reference implementation.
Obviously, this new platform is multiplatform capable so it
can be combined with existing machines in the same kernel.

A large number of cleanups, all over the platforms. This is dominated
largely by the Samsung platforms (s3c, s5p, exynos) and a few of the
others moving code out of arch/arm into more appropriate subsystems.

If we're booted in HYP mode, it is possible that we'll run some

The arch_timer driver supports a superset of the functionality of the
arm_generic driver, and is not tied to a particular arch.
This patch moves arm64 to use the arch_timer driver, gaining additional
functionality in doing so, and removes the (now unused) arm_generic
driver. Timer-related hooks specific to arm64 are moved into
arch/arm64/kernel/time.c.

The core functionality of the arch_timer driver is not directly tied to
anything under arch/arm, and can be split out.
This patch factors out the core of the arch_timer driver, so it can be
shared with other architectures. A couple of functions are added so
that architecture-specific code can interact with the driver without
needing to touch its internals.
The ARM_ARCH_TIMER config variable is moved out to
drivers/clocksource/Kconfig, existing uses in arch/arm are replaced with
HAVE_ARM_ARCH_TIMER, which selects it.

The clockevent core is able to figure out the best mult and shift,
calculate min_delta_ns and max_delta_ns, with the necessary info passed
into clockevents_config_and_register(). Use this combined configure
and register function where possible to make the codes less error prone
and gain some positive diff stat.

CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option. As a result, the __dev*
markings need to be removed.
This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, __devinitdata,
__devinitconst, and __devexit from these drivers.
Based on patches originally written by Bill Pemberton, but redone by me
in order to handle some of the coding style issues better, by hand.

It is desirable to move all clocksource drivers to drivers/clocksource,
yet each requires its own initialization function. We'd rather not
pollute <linux/> with a header for each function. Instead, create a
single of_clksrc_init() function which will determine which clocksource
driver to initialize based on device tree.

Now that the only field in struct sys_timer is .init, delete the struct,
and replace the machine descriptor .timer field with the initialization
function itself.
This will enable moving timer drivers into drivers/clocksource without
having to place a public prototype of each struct sys_timer object into
include/linux; the intent is to create a single of_clocksource_init()
function that determines which timer driver to initialize by scanning
the device dtree, much like the proposed irqchip_init() at:

Move ux500's timer suspend/resume functions from struct sys_timer
ux500_timer into struct clock_event_device nmdk_clkevt. This
will allow the sys_timer suspend/resume fields to be removed, and
eventually lead to a complete removal of struct sys_timer.

We want to use the virtual counter at EL0, as the physical counter
may not track the current clocksource for guests running under a
hypervisor.
This patch updates the vdso and generic timer driver to use the virtual
counter. The kernel EL2 entry code is also updated to ensure that the
virtual offset is initialised to zero.

This moves the MTU timer driver from arch/arm/plat-nomadik
to drivers/clocksource and moves the header file to the
platform_data directory.
As this moves the last file being compiled to an object out
of arch/arm/plat-nomadik, we have to "turn off the light"
and delete the plat-nomadik directory, because it is not
allowed to have an empty Makefile in a plat-* directory.
This is probably also a desired side effect of depopulating
the arch/arm directory of drivers. Luckily we have just
deleted all the <plat/*> include files prior to this so
by moving the last one we may delete the directory.
After this all the Ux500 and Nomadik device drivers live
outside of the arch/arm hierarchy.

to common clock, misc updates for several other platforms, and OMAP
now has its own bus (under drivers/bus) to manage its devices through.
This branch adds two new directories outside of arch/arm:
drivers/irqchip for new irq controllers, and drivers/bus for the above
OMAP bus. It's expected that some of the other platforms will migrate
parts of their platforms to those directories over time as well.

The System Timer peripheral provides four 32-bit timer channels and a
single 64-bit free running counter. Each channel has an output compare
register, which is compared against the 32 least significant bits of the
free running counter values, and generates an interrupt.
Timer 3 is used as the Linux timer.
The BCM2835 also contains an SP804-based timer module. However, it
apparently has significant differences from the standard SP804 IP block,
and Broadcom's documentation recommends using the system timer instead.
This patch was extracted from git://github.com/lp0/linux.git branch
rpi-split as of 2012/09/08, and modified as follows:

This patch adds support for the ARM generic timers with A64 instructions
for accessing the timer registers. It uses the physical counter as the
clock source and the virtual counter as sched_clock.
The timer frequency can be specified via DT or read from the CNTFRQ_EL0
register. The physical counter is also accessible from user space
allowing fast gettimeofday() implementation.

The syscore device PM flag is used to mark the devices (belonging to
a PM domain) that should never be turned off, except for the system
core (syscore) suspend/hibernation and resume stages. That flag is
stored in the device's struct pm_subsys_data object whose address is
available from struct device. However, in some situations it may be
convenient to set that flag before the device is added to a PM
domain, so it is better to move it directly to the "power" member of
struct device. Then, it can be checked by the routines in
drivers/base/power/runtime.c and drivers/base/power/main.c, which is
more straightforward.
This also reduces the number of dev_gpd_data() invocations in the
generic PM domains framework, so the overhead related to the syscore
flag is slightly smaller.

rudimentary for now, but will be extended in the future.

This platform has been obsoleted and was only available inside of
ST-Ericsson, no users of this code are left in the world. This
deletes the core U5500 support entirely in the same manner as the
obsoleted U8500 silicon was previously deleted.
The cpu_is_u5500() macros that can read out the CPU ID is left
until the next kernel cycle, this makes it possible to merge
deletion of dependent drivers without breakage.
This also has the upside of removing the mailbox driver which was
our only driver that was outside the drivers/* hiearchy, now the
machine directory only handles machines and nothing else.

The reason for this revert is that making the frequency verification
preemptible and interruptible is not working reliably. Michaels
machine failed to use PM-timer with the message:
PM-Timer running at invalid rate: 113% of normal - aborting.
That's not a surprise as the frequency verification does rely on
interrupts being disabled. With a async scheduled thread there is no
guarantee to achieve the same result. Also some driver might fiddle
with the CTC channel 2 during the verification period, which makes the
result even more random and unpredictable.
This can be solved by using the same mechanism as we use in the
deferred TSC validation code, but that only will work if we verified a
working HPET _BEFORE_ trying to do the PM-Timer lazy validation.
So for now reverting is the safe option.

Make the TMU clocksource driver mark its device as "always on"
using pm_genpd_dev_always_on() to protect it from surprise power
removals and make sh7372_add_standard_devices() add TMU devices on
sh7372 to the A4R power domain so that their "always on" flags
are taken into account as appropriate.

Shared timer IRQs are not a good solution, however the Geode platform has
no APIC, IRQs are a scarce resource and there is no technical reason to
forbid it rightaway. Increased latencies and overhead due to sharing are
still better than a driver refusing to load.

On SMP-capable kernels (e.g. generic distro kernel) the cs5535-clockevt
driver loads but is not actually used.
Setting cpumask to cpu_all_mask works for UP-only kernels, but if compiled
for SMP - though still running on the same UP hardware -
kernel/time/tick-common.c:tick_check_new_device() reads this as
"non-cpu-local" and silently ignores the device.
If we leave cpumask unset clockevents_register_device() will initialize it
and the cs5535-clockevt driver will be used no matter how the kernel was
compiled. Should anyone ever manage to stick a CS553x in an SMP system
(is this even possible?) then a warning will be printed. This is fine as
the cs5535-clockevt driver was never written/tested for SMP.
If bisecting led you here this patch may have exposed a pre-existing MFGPT
problem. Configure for UP-only and re-check.

Some SoC have a 32 bit variant of Timer Counter Blocks. We do not
need the chaining of two 16 bit counters anymore for them.
The SoC nature is deduced from the device tree "compatible" string.
For non-device-tree configurations, backward compatibility is maintained
by using the default 16 bit counter configuration.
This patch addresses both the atmel_tclib and its user: tcb_clksrc
clocksource.

The ACPI clocksource takes quite some time to initialize,
and this increases the boot time of the kernel for a
double digit percentage. This while almost all modern
systems will be using the HPET already anyway.
This patch turns the clocksource loading into an asynchronous
operation; which means it won't hold up the boot while
still becoming available normally.
To make this work well, an udelay() had to be turned into an
usleep_range() so that on UP systems, we yield the CPU to
regular boot tasks instead of spinning.

MIPS and ARM are the only other arches that use this driver. In
the MIPS case CLOCK_TICK_RATE is defined as the same value as
PIT_TICK_RATE. For ARM, the only machine that uses it is
Footbridge which has a totally bogus CLOCK_TICK_RATE according
to the comments. Furthermore, the clockevent_i8253_init()
initializes the clockevent with PIT_TIC_RATE, so there's
no reason to use the generic LATCH.
This is part of work to remove and depecrate the global
CLOCK_TICK_RATE symbol.

Based on a patch from Arnd Bergmann this fixes up the build
problem of assigning a non-existing global when the ux500 PRCMU
timer is not linked in by passing its base address to the init
function. We also add a missing <linux/errno.h> inclusion and
staticize the dummy function.

The APB timers are an IP block from Synopsys (DesignWare APB timers)
and are also found in other systems including ARM SoC's. This patch
adds functions for creating clock_event_devices and clocksources from
APB timers but does not do the resource allocation. This is handled
in a higher layer to allow the timers to be created from multiple
methods such as platform_devices.

paths and the runtime PM tie-in that results in __pm_runtime_resume()
attempting to take a lock that hasn't been initialized yet (which by
proxy also suggests that pm_runtime_init() hasn't yet been run on the
device either, making the entire thing unsafe) -- resulting in instant
death on SMP or on UP with spinlock debugging enabled:

Add a generic mmio clocksource, covering both 32-bit and 16-bit register
access sizes, for up or down counters. This can be used to easily
create clocksources for simple counter-based implementations.

This patch updates the clocksource part of the TMU driver
to make use of the __clocksource_updatefreq_hz() function.
Without this patch the old code uses clocksource_register()
together with a hack that assumes a never changing clock rate
(see clk_enable(), clk_get_rate() and clk_disable()).
The patch uses clocksource_register_hz() with 1 Hz as initial
value, then lets the ->enable() callback update the value
with __clocksource_updatefreq_hz() once the struct clk has
been enabled and the frequency is stable.

setup_irq() was called before clockevents_register_device() which is
needed by the irq handler. Bug was reproducible by restarting the
kernel using kexec (reliable crash).

If the acpi pm timer throws invalid data, clear pmtmr_ioport
so the pm timer won't accidentally be used.
This was found when using Xen where there is a acpi pm reported,
but gives bogus values, and other code was continuing to try
to use the pm timer after the initialization failed.

There are control flow that sh_cmt_set_next() does double
spin-lock. The callers sh_cmt_{start,stop}() already have
lock. But another callers sh_cmt_clock_event_{start,next}()
does not.
Now sh_cmt_set_next() does not lock by itself. All the
callers should hold spin-lock before calling it.

Since commit 98962465ed ("nohz: Prevent
clocksource wrapping during idle"), the CPU of an R2D board never goes
to idle. This commit assumes that mult and shift are assigned before
the clocksource is registered. As a consequence the safe maximum sleep
time is negative and the CPU never goes into idle.
This patch fixes the problem by moving mult and shift initialization
from sh_tmu_clocksource_enable() to sh_tmu_register_clocksource().

Make sure that the timer IRQs and IPIs aren't enabled for IRQ balancing.
IPIs are disabled as a result of being percpu while the timers simply
disable balancing outright.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

We want to get rid of the clock string from platform data entirely,
depending on the clkdev-based clock lookup to do the right thing for us
instead.
This converts all of the SH drivers to request their associated function
clocks directly, and if there is no match for that then we fall back on
the legacy lookup while warning about it. After all of the outstanding
CPUs have been converted to clkdev lookups the clock string will be
killed off completely.

Due to a hardware limitation cs5535_mfgpt_free_timer() cannot actually
release the timer hardware, but it will at least free the now unreferenced
struct associated with it so calling it is the cleaner thing to do.

All of the SH clocksource drivers follow the scheme that the IRQ is setup
prior to registering the clockevent. The interrupt handler in the
clockevent cases looks to the event handler function pointer being filled
in by the registration code, permitting us to get in to situations where
asserted IRQs step in to the handler before registration has had a chance
to complete and hitting a NULL pointer deref.
In practice this is not an issue for most platforms, but some of them
with fairly special loaders (or that are chain-loading from another
kernel) may enter in to this situation. This fixes up the oops reported
by Rafael on hp6xx.

geode-mfgpt: restore previous behavior for selecting IRQ
The MFGPT IRQ used to be, in order of decreasing priority,
* IRQ supplied by the user as a boot-time parameter,
* IRQ previously set by the BIOS or another driver,
* default IRQ given at compile time.
Return to this behavior, which got broken when splitting the
MFGPT/clocksource driver for 2.6.33-rc1.

Add code to start the CMT timer on clocksource resume. While at it handle
the suspend case as well. Remove the platform device specific suspend
calls.
This makes sure the timer is started during sysdev_resume(). Without this
patch the clocksource may be read as suspended, this after sysdev resume
but before platform device resume.

This is based on the old code in arch/x86/kernel/mfgpt_32.c, but is
modular and not Geode-specific. There's no reason why the clock event
device needs to be registered so early at boot; the clockevent code is
perfectly capable of dynamic switching.

Avoid undocumented vague TMU behavior when zero value is set to TCOR.
This primarily fixes up issues encountered under qemu with a zero-length

Modify the CMT and TMU drivers to disable interrupts when
disabling the timer. Only using start/stop bits is not
enough.
This fixes a bootup hang on Migo-R when the CMT is replaced
by TMU for clockevents but the CMT keeps on delivering irqs
even though the timer start bit is off.

PIT_TICK_RATE is currently defined in four architectures, but in three
different places. While linux/timex.h is not the perfect place for it, it
is still a reasonable replacement for those drivers that traditionally use
asm/timex.h to get CLOCK_TICK_RATE and expect it to be the PIT frequency.
Note that for Alpha, the actual value changed from 1193182UL to 1193180UL.
This is unlikely to make a difference, and probably can only improve
accuracy. There was a discussion on the correct value of CLOCK_TICK_RATE
a few years ago, after which every existing instance was getting changed
to 1193182. According to the specification, it should be
1193181.818181...

This patch adds a TMU driver for the SuperH architecture.
The TMU driver is a platform driver with early platform
support to allow using a TMU channel as clockevent or
clocksource during system bootup or later.
Clocksource or clockevent can be selected.
Both periodic and oneshot clockevents are supported.

This patch adds a MTU2 driver for the SuperH architecture.
The MTU2 driver is a platform driver with early platform
support to allow using a MTU2 channel as only clockevent
during system bootup.
Clocksource on sh2a is currently unsupported due to code
generation issues with 64-bit math, so at this point only
periodic clockevent support is in place.

This patch moves the SuperH timer setup code from time_init()
to late_time_init(). Good things about this change:
- interrupts: they are enabled at late_time_init()
- mm: regular kmalloc() can be used at late_time_init()
Together with moving to late_time_init() this patch changes
the sh_cmt driver to always allocate with kmalloc(). This

This patch improves the sh_cmt clocksource handling.
Currently the counter value is ignored in the case of
overflow. With this patch the overflow flag is read
before and after reading the counter, removing any
counter value and overflow flag mismatch issues.

SuperH CMT clockevent driver.
Both 16-bit and 32-bit CMT versions are supported, but only 32-bit
is tested. This driver contains support for both clockevents and
clocksources, but no unregistration is supported at this point.
Works fine as clock source and/or event in periodic or oneshot mode.
Tested on sh7722 and sh7723, but should work with any cpu/architecture.
This version is lacking clocksource and early platform driver support
for now - this to minimize the amount of dependencies.

struct clock_event_timer's cpumask field gets changed to take pointer,
as does the ->broadcast function.

acpi_pm_read_slow() is only used when CONFIG_PCI=y, so move the definition
inside the ifdef.
Otherwise this causes a "defined but not used" warning when building with
CONFIG_ACPI=y and CONFIG_PCI=n (that's not supported yet, but it could
be).

The current check for monotonicity is way too weak: Andreas Mohr reports (
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/8/10/77 ) that on one of his test systems the
current check only triggers in 50% of all cases, leading to catastrophic
timer behaviour. To fix this issue, expand the check for monotonicity by
doing ten consecutive tests instead of one.

On all hardware (some Intel ICH4, PIIX4 and PIIX4E chipsets) affected by a
hardware errata there's about a 4.2% chance that initialization of the
ACPI PMTMR fails. On those chipsets, we need to read out the timer value
at least three times to get a correct result, for every once in a while
(i.e. within a 3 ns window every 69.8 ns) the read returns a bogus
result. During normal operation we work around this issue, but during
initialization reading a bogus value may lead to -EINVAL even though the
hardware is usable.

Clocksource and clockevent device based on the Atmel TC blocks.
The clockevent device handles both periodic and oneshot modes, so this
enables NO_HZ and high res timers on some platforms that previously
couldn't use those mechanisms.
This works on both AVR32 and AT91 chips, given relevant patches for
tclib support (always) and clockevents (or else this will only look
like a higher precision clocksource). It's an updated and modularized
version of an AT91-only patch that has circulated for some time now.
Changes relative to the original patch:
* Update to use new tclib API
* Replace open-coded do-while loop using goto with a real do-while loop
* Minor irq handler optimization: Load register base address from
dev_id instead of a global variable.
* Aggressively turn off clocks when the clockevent isn't being used
* Include the clockevent code on AT91RM9200 as well. The rating is
lower than the System Timer, so the clock will usually stay off.
* Don't assume that the number of clocks is always equal to the
number of irqs.

Instead of all drivers reading pci config space to get the revision
ID, they can now use the pci_device->revision member.
This exposes some issues where drivers where reading a word or a dword
for the revision number, and adding useless error-handling around the
read. Some drivers even just read it for no purpose of all.
In devices where the revision ID is being copied over and used in what
appears to be the equivalent of hotpath, I have left the copy code
and the cached copy as not to influence the driver's performance.
Compile tested with make all{yes,mod}config on x86_64 and i386.

On Bob's machine clocksource is selecting PIT over the ACPI PM timer,
because he has the PIIX4 bug. That bug drops the ACPI PM timers rating
to the same as the PIT, so that's why you're getting the PIT.
Realistically, the PIT is much slower then even the triple read ACPI PM,
so the de-ranking code is probably dropping it too far.
So don't drop ACPI PM quite so low if we see the PIIX4 bug.

The basic summary is:
Currently we register most of i386/x86_64 clocksources at module_init
time. Then we enable clocksource selection at late_initcall time. This
causes some problems for drivers that use gettimeofday for init
calibration routines (specifically the es1968 driver in this case),
where durring module_init, the only clocksource available is the low-res
jiffies clocksource. This may cause slight calibration errors, due to
the small sampling time used.
It should be noted that drivers that require fine grained time may not
function on architectures that do not have better then jiffies
resolution timekeeping (there are a few). However, this does not
discount the reasonable need for such fine-grained timekeeping at init
time.
Thus the solution here is to register clocksources earlier (ideally when
the hardware is being initialized), and then we enable clocksource
selection at fs_initcall (before device_initcall).
This patch should probably get some testing time in -mm, since
clocksource selection is one of the most important issues for correct
timekeeping, and I've only been able to test this on a few of my own
boxes.

Allow early access to the power management timer by exposing the verified read
function and providing a helper function which checks the pmtmr_ioport
variable and returns either the pm timer readout or 0 in case the pm timer is
not available.
Create a new header file and replace also the ifdef'ed extern definition in
arch/i386/kernel/acpi/boot.c
This is a preperatory patch for the rework of the local apic timer
calibration.
No functional changes.

This patch re-adds the verify_pmtmr_rate functionality from 2.6.17 that
I dropped 2.6.18.
This resolves problems seen on older K6 ASUS boards where the ACPI PM
timer runs too fast.

I have an acpi_pm that goes backwards, but it's not intel. I tested the
verified read and my acpi_pm started to function properly. So I added it
to the greylist. I'm assuming that's the right spot.
I also added an unlikely() to the while, cause it seems appropriate.
