is too optimistic, and would rely on the invariant fb being
reconstructed to exactly fit each pipe (and probably ignore hardware
limits). Instead, we want to compute the upper bound on what the display
engine will access and ensure that is within the inherited framebuffer.

Dave Airlie 2844ea3f25 Merge branch 'primary-plane' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~robclark/linux into drm-next
Here's the latest iteration of the universal planes work, which I believe is
finally ready for merging.  Aside from the minor driver patches to use the
new drm_for_each_legacy_plane() macro for plane loops, these should all have
an r-b from Rob Clark now.

Actual userspace-visibility is currently hidden behind a
drm.universal_planes module parameter so that we can do some experimental
testing of this before flipping it on universally.

This was originally introduced to make encoder sharing on radone
easier for userspace, but:

- It is policy and as such belongs into userspace. E.g. personally I'm
  fairly annoyed that a flaky cable results in permanent changes of
  the desktop layout, so I'll kick out DEs which do this. Worse if the
  kernel also tries to be clever.

- It's inconsistent: We only kill disconnected outputs on setCrtc
  (which userspace might also call when just changing the
  framebuffer), but not when e.g. we receive a hpd event or in the
  output poll worker.

- It's unexpected behaviour for the userspace driver, at least in the
  intel ddx we've had tons of bugs where the driver fell over and
  killed the X session becuase pageflips/vblanks suddenly stopped
  working. We've had to fix this by wrapping every single setCrtc int
  a big "recover kms state from the kernel again" operation.

- It's suprising for the kernel, too: It took a few mails between Rob,
  Matt and me for them to notice that little dragon wreaking havoc
  with the universal plane framebuffer refcounting.

- Userspace can cope with it and e.g. Gnome already kills disconnected
  outputs and reconfigures the desktop automatically. And since there
  have been no regression reports for the i915 change from over 1 year
  ago I think all other DEs are also ready.

Lespiau, Damien bfe8b5738a drm: Specify a bit more the DRM_CAP_CURSOR_{WIDTH, HEIGHT} caps
Earlier this week, there was a bit of confusion about those new
capabilities, to the point I think it's better to document the intention
and API contract.

The comment documents the current situation:
 - the radeon driver returns the only valid size for the hw
 - i915 returns the maximun cursor size
 - other drivers fall back to returning 64x64

The common contract is to return a valid cursor size.

Now that CRTC's have a primary plane, there's no need to track the
framebuffer in the CRTC.  Replace all references to the CRTC fb with the
primary plane's fb.

This patch was generated by the Coccinelle semantic patching tool using

Add a new drm_crtc_init_with_planes() to allow drivers to provide
specific primary and cursor planes at CRTC initialization.  The existing
drm_crtc_init() interface remains to avoid driver churn in existing
drivers; it will initialize the CRTC with a plane helper-created primary
plane and no cursor plane.

Add a new plane initialization interface for universal plane support
that allows a specific plane type (primary, cursor, or overlay) to
be specified.

drm_plane_init() remains as a compatibility API to reduce churn in
existing drivers.  The 'bool priv' parameter has been changed to
'bool is_primary' under the assumption that all existing uses of
private planes were representing primary planes.

Matt Roper c103d1cfb3 drm: Add primary plane helpers (v3)
When we expose non-overlay planes to userspace, they will become
accessible via standard userspace plane API's.  We should be able to
handle the standard plane operations against primary planes in a generic
way via the modeset handler.

Drivers that can program primary planes more efficiently, that want to
use their own primary plane structure to track additional information,
or that don't have the limitations assumed by the helpers are free to
provide their own implementation of some or all of these handlers.

v3: Tweak kerneldoc formatting slightly to avoid ugliness

 - Move plane helpers to a new file (drm_plane_helper.c)
 - Tighten checks on update handler (check for scaling, CRTC coverage,
   subpixel positioning)
 - Pass proper panning parameters to modeset interface
 - Disallow disabling primary plane (and thus CRTC) if other planes are
   still active on the CRTC.
 - Use a minimal format list that should work on all hardware/drivers.
   Drivers may call this function with a more accurate plane list to
   enable additional formats they can support.

Paulo Zanoni 97bea20794 drm/i915: add gen-specific runtime suspend/resume functions
We're adding runtime suspend support to more platforms, so organize
the code in a way that all a new platform needs to do is to add its
own gen-specific functions. Also rename the i915_ functions to intel_
to make it clear that it's the top level one, not something that just
runs on i915 platforms.

Paulo Zanoni 730488b2ed drm/i915: kill dev_priv->pm.regsave
Now that we don't keep the hotplug interrupts enabled anymore, we can
kill the regsave struct and just cal the normal IRQ preinstall,
postinstall and uninstall functions. This makes it easier to add
runtime PM support to non-HSW platforms.

The only downside is in case we get a request to update interrupts
while they are disabled, won't be able to update the regsave struct.
But this should never happen anyway, so we're not losing too much.

Paulo Zanoni 622364b667 drm/i915: enable SDEIER later
On the preinstall stage we should just disable all the interrupts, but
we currently enable all the south display interrupts due to the way we
touch SDEIER at the IRQ handlers (note: they are still masked and our
IRQ handler is disabled). Instead of doing that, let's make the
preinstall stage just disable all the south interrupts, and do the
proper interrupt dance/ordering at the postinstall stage, including an
assert to check if everything is behaving as expected.

The SERR_INT register is very similar to the other IIR registers, so
let's zero it at preinstall/uninstall and WARN for a non-zero value at
postinstall, just like we do with the other IIR registers. For this
one, there's no need to double-clear since it can't store more than
one interrupt.

Paulo Zanoni 337ba0175f drm/i915: check if IIR is still zero at postinstall on Gen5+
It should already be masked and disabled and zeroed at the preinstall
and uninstall stages. Also, the current code just writes to IIR once,
and this is not a guarantee that it will be cleared, so it's wrong
anyway.

The whole reason for the paranoia is that we're going to start calling
the IRQ preinstall/postinstall/uninstall from the runtime PM
callbacks, so we need to make sure everything is behaving as expected.

Paulo Zanoni f86f3fb005 drm/i915: properly clear IIR at irq_uninstall on Gen5+
The IRQ_INIT and IRQ_FINI macros are basically the same thing, with
the exception that IRQ_FINI doesn't properly clear IIR twice and
doesn't have as many POSTING_READs as IRQ_INIT. So rename the INIT
macro to IRQ_RESET and use it everywhere.

Paulo Zanoni 5c50244253 drm/i915: use GEN8_IRQ_INIT on GEN5
And rename it to GEN5_IRQ_INIT.

We have discussed doing equivalent changes on July 2013, and I even
sent a patch series for this: "[PATCH 00/15] Unify interrupt register
init/reset". Now that the BDW code was merged, I have one more
argument in favor of these changes.

Here's what really changes with the Gen 5 IRQ init code:
  - We now clear the IIR registers at preinstall (they are also
    cleared at postinstall, but we will change that later).
  - We have an additional POSTING_READ at the IMR register.

Paulo Zanoni 0bda1cf739 drm/i915: also use GEN5_IRQ_INIT with south display interrupts
This interrupt gets initialized with a different IER value, so it was
not using the macro. The problem is that we plan to modify the macro
to make it do additional things, and we want the SDE interrupts
updated too. So let's make sure we call the macro, then, after it, we
do the necessary SDE-specific changes.

Pradeep Bhat 83a7280ebc drm/i915: Adding VBT fields to support eDP DRRS feature
This patch reads the DRRS support and Mode type from VBT fields.
The read information will be stored in VBT struct during BIOS
parsing. The above functionality is needed for decision making
whether DRRS feature is supported in i915 driver for eDP panels.
This information helps us decide if seamless DRRS can be done
at runtime to support certain power saving features. This patch
was tested by setting necessary bit in VBT struct and merging
the new VBT with system BIOS so that we can read the value.

Removed "intel_" as a prefix for DRRS specific declarations.

Removed function which deducts drrs mode from panel_type. Modified some
