Alexey Kardashevskiy fc051ae6c4 memory/hmp: Print owners/parents in "info mtree"
This adds owners/parents (which are the same, just occasionally
owner==NULL) printing for memory regions; a new '-o' flag
enabled new output.

Peter Maydell 2c91bcf273 iommu: Add IOMMU index argument to translate method
Add an IOMMU index argument to the translate method of
IOMMUs. Since all of our current IOMMU implementations
support only a single IOMMU index, this has no effect
on the behaviour.

Peter Maydell cb1efcf462 iommu: Add IOMMU index argument to notifier APIs
Add support for multiple IOMMU indexes to the IOMMU notifier APIs.
When initializing a notifier with iommu_notifier_init(), the caller
must pass the IOMMU index that it is interested in. When a change
happens, the IOMMU implementation must pass
memory_region_notify_iommu() the IOMMU index that has changed and
that notifiers must be called for.

IOMMUs which support only a single index don't need to change.
Callers which only really support working with IOMMUs with a single
index can use the result of passing MEMTXATTRS_UNSPECIFIED to
memory_region_iommu_attrs_to_index().

Peter Maydell 21f402093c iommu: Add IOMMU index concept to IOMMU API
If an IOMMU supports mappings that care about the memory
transaction attributes, then it no longer has a unique
address -> output mapping, but more than one. We can
represent these using an IOMMU index, analogous to TCG's

Peter Maydell 8372d38327 Make MemoryRegion valid.accepts callback take a MemTxAttrs argument
As part of plumbing MemTxAttrs down to the IOMMU translate method,
add MemTxAttrs as an argument to the MemoryRegion valid.accepts
callback. We'll need this for subpage_accepts().

We could take the approach we used with the read and write
callbacks and add new a new _with_attrs version, but since there
are so few implementations of the accepts hook we just change
them all.

As part of plumbing MemTxAttrs down to the IOMMU translate method,
add MemTxAttrs as an argument to memory_region_access_valid().
Its callers either have an attrs value to hand, or don't care
and can use MEMTXATTRS_UNSPECIFIED.

The callsite in flatview_access_valid() is part of a recursive
loop flatview_access_valid() -> memory_region_access_valid() ->
 subpage_accepts() -> flatview_access_valid(); we make it pass
MEMTXATTRS_UNSPECIFIED for now, until the next several commits
have plumbed an attrs parameter through the rest of the loop
and we can add an attrs parameter to flatview_access_valid().

Paolo Bonzini 48564041a7 exec: reintroduce MemoryRegion caching
MemoryRegionCache was reverted to "normal" address_space_* operations
for 2.9, due to lack of support for IOMMUs. Reinstate the
optimizations, caching only the IOMMU translation at address_cache_init
but not the IOMMU lookup and target AddressSpace translation are not
cached; now that MemoryRegionCache supports IOMMUs, it becomes more widely
applicable too.

The inlined fast path is defined in memory_ldst_cached.inc.h, while the
slow path uses memory_ldst.inc.c as before. The smaller fast path causes
a little code size reduction in MemoryRegionCache users:

    hw/virtio/virtio.o text size before: 32373
    hw/virtio/virtio.o text size after: 31941

Currently only file backed memory backend can
be created with a "share" flag in order to allow
sharing guest RAM with other processes in the host.

Add the "share" flag also to RAM Memory Backend
in order to allow remapping parts of the guest RAM
to different host virtual addresses. This is needed
by the RDMA devices in order to remap non-contiguous
QEMU virtual addresses to a contiguous virtual address range.

Moved the "share" flag to the Host Memory base class,
modified phys_mem_alloc to include the new parameter
and a new interface memory_region_init_ram_shared_nomigrate.

Peter Xu d25836cafd memory: do explicit cleanup when remove listeners
When unregister memory listeners, we should call, e.g.,
region_del() (and possibly other undo operations) on every existing
memory region sections there, otherwise we may leak resources that are
held during the region_add(). This patch undo the stuff for the
listeners, which emulates the case when the address space is set from
current to an empty state.

I found this problem when debugging a refcount leak issue that leads to
a device unplug event lost (please see the "Bug:" line below). In that
case, the leakage of resource is the PCI BAR memory region refcount.
And since memory regions are not keeping their own refcount but onto
their owners, so the vfio-pci device's (who is the owner of the PCI BAR
memory regions) refcount is leaked, and event missing.

We had encountered similar issues before and fixed in other
way (ee4c112846, "vhost: Release memory references on cleanup"). This
patch can be seen as a more high-level fix of similar problems that are
caused by the resource leaks from memory listeners. So now we can remove
the explicit unref of memory regions since that'll be done altogether
during unregistering of listeners now.

Haozhong Zhang 9837684316 hostmem-file: add "align" option
When mmap(2) the backend files, QEMU uses the host page size
(getpagesize(2)) by default as the alignment of mapping address.
However, some backends may require alignments different than the page
size. For example, mmap a device DAX (e.g., /dev/dax0.0) on Linux
kernel 4.13 to an address, which is 4K-aligned but not 2M-aligned,
fails with a kernel message like

[617494.969768] dax dax0.0: qemu-system-x86: dax_mmap: fail, unaligned vma (0x7fa37c579000 - 0x7fa43c579000, 0x1fffff)

Because there is no common approach to get such alignment requirement,
we add the 'align' option to 'memory-backend-file', so that users or
management utils, which have enough knowledge about the backend, can
specify a proper alignment via this option.

David Hildenbrand ae990e6cd7 memory: call log_start after region_add
It might be confusing for some listener implementations that implement
both, region_add and log_start (e.g. KVM) if we call log_start before an

This makes current KVM code trigger an assertion
("kvm_section_update_flags: error finding slot"). So let's just reverse
the order instead of tolerating log_start on yet unknown regions.

the amount of FlatView's in use (557 -> 260) and dispatch tables

Paolo Bonzini e673ba9af9 memory: seek FlatView sharing candidates among children subregions
A container can be used instead of an alias to allow switching between
multiple subregions. In this case we cannot directly share the
subregions (since they only belong to a single parent), but if the
subregions are aliases we can in turn walk those.

This is not enough to remove all source of quadratic FlatView creation,
but it enables sharing of the PCI bus master FlatViews (and their
AddressSpaceDispatch structures) across all PCI devices. For 112
virtio-net-pci devices, boot time is reduced from 25 to 10 seconds and
memory consumption from 1.4 to 1 G.

Paolo Bonzini 447b0d0b9e memory: avoid "resurrection" of dead FlatViews
It's possible for address_space_get_flatview() as it currently stands
to cause a use-after-free for the returned FlatView, if the reference
count is incremented after the FlatView has been replaced by a writer:

thread 1 thread 2 RCU thread
  -------------------------------------------------------------
   rcu_read_lock
   read as->current_map
                        set as->current_map
                        flatview_unref
                           '--> call_rcu
   flatview_ref
     [ref=1]
   rcu_read_unlock
                                             flatview_destroy
   <badness>

Since FlatViews are not updated very often, we can just detect the
situation using a new atomic op atomic_fetch_inc_nonzero, similar to
Linux's atomic_inc_not_zero, which performs the refcount increment only if
it hasn't already hit zero. This is similar to Linux commit de09a9771a53
("CRED: Fix get_task_cred() and task_state() to not resurrect dead
credentials", 2010-07-29).

Jay Zhou 1931076077 migration: optimize the downtime
Qemu_savevm_state_cleanup takes about 300ms in my ram migration tests
with a 8U24G vm(20G is really occupied), the main cost comes from
KVM_SET_USER_MEMORY_REGION ioctl when mem.memory_size = 0 in

kvm_zap_obsolete_pages, which traverses the active_mmu_pages list to

It can be optimized by delaying memory_global_dirty_log_stop to the next

VFIOGuestIOMMU by checking the IOMMUNotifier.start address as well.

This patch is solving the problem that vfio-pci devices receive
duplicated UNMAP notification on x86 platform when vIOMMU is there. The
issue is that x86 IOMMU has a (0, 2^64-1) IOMMU region, which is
splitted by the (0xfee00000, 0xfeefffff) IRQ region. AFAIK
this (splitted IOMMU region) is only happening on x86.

This patch also helps vhost to leverage the new interface as well, so
that vhost won't get duplicated cache flushes. In that sense, it's an
slight performance improvement.

Yongji Xie c99a29e702 memory: Introduce DEVICE_HOST_ENDIAN for ram device
At the moment ram device's memory regions are DEVICE_NATIVE_ENDIAN. It's
incorrect. This memory region is backed by a MMIO area in host, so the

host-endian rather than target-endian. Hence, current code does not work
when target and host endianness are different which is the most common case

This has been tested on PPC64 BE/LE host/guest in all possible combinations

Jan Kiszka 8d04fb55de tcg: drop global lock during TCG code execution
This finally allows TCG to benefit from the iothread introduction: Drop
the global mutex while running pure TCG CPU code. Reacquire the lock
when entering MMIO or PIO emulation, or when leaving the TCG loop.

We have to revert a few optimization for the current TCG threading
model, namely kicking the TCG thread in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread and not
kicking it in qemu_cpu_kick. We also need to disable RAM block
reordering until we have a more efficient locking mechanism at hand.

Still, a Linux x86 UP guest and my Musicpal ARM model boot fine here.
These numbers demonstrate where we gain something:

20338 jan 20 0 331m 75m 6904 R 99 0.9 0:50.95 qemu-system-arm
20337 jan 20 0 331m 75m 6904 S 20 0.9 0:26.50 qemu-system-arm

The guest CPU was fully loaded, but the iothread could still run mostly
independent on a second core. Without the patch we don't get beyond

32206 jan 20 0 330m 73m 7036 R 82 0.9 1:06.00 qemu-system-arm
32204 jan 20 0 330m 73m 7036 S 21 0.9 0:17.03 qemu-system-arm

We don't benefit significantly, though, when the guest is not fully
loading a host CPU.

Alex Williamson 4a2e242bbb memory: Don't use memcpy for ram_device regions
With a vfio assigned device we lay down a base MemoryRegion registered
as an IO region, giving us read & write accessors. If the region
supports mmap, we lay down a higher priority sub-region MemoryRegion
on top of the base layer initialized as a RAM device pointer to the
mmap. Finally, if we have any quirks for the device (ie. address
ranges that need additional virtualization support), we put another IO
sub-region on top of the mmap MemoryRegion. When this is flattened,
we now potentially have sub-page mmap MemoryRegions exposed which
cannot be directly mapped through KVM.

This is as expected, but a subtle detail of this is that we end up
with two different access mechanisms through QEMU. If we disable the
mmap MemoryRegion, we make use of the IO MemoryRegion and service
accesses using pread and pwrite to the vfio device file descriptor.
If the mmap MemoryRegion is enabled and results in one of these
sub-page gaps, QEMU handles the access as RAM, using memcpy to the
mmap. Using either pread/pwrite or the mmap directly should be
correct, but using memcpy causes us problems. I expect that not only
does memcpy not necessarily honor the original width and alignment in
performing a copy, but it potentially also uses processor instructions
not intended for MMIO spaces. It turns out that this has been a
problem for Realtek NIC assignment, which has such a quirk that
creates a sub-page mmap MemoryRegion access.

To resolve this, we disable memory_access_is_direct() for ram_device
regions since QEMU assumes that it can use memcpy for those regions.
Instead we access through MemoryRegionOps, which replaces the memcpy
with simple de-references of standard sizes to the host memory.

With this patch we attempt to provide unrestricted access to the RAM
device, allowing byte through qword access as well as unaligned
access. The assumption here is that accesses initiated by the VM are
driven by a device specific driver, which knows the device
capabilities. If unaligned accesses are not supported by the device,
we don't want them to work in a VM by performing multiple aligned
accesses to compose the unaligned access. A down-side of this
philosophy is that the xp command from the monitor attempts to use
the largest available access weidth, unaware of the underlying
device. Using memcpy had this same restriction, but at least now an
operator can dump individual registers, even if blocks of device
memory may result in access widths beyond the capabilities of a
given device (RTL NICs only support up to dword).

more than that. If we have a RAM MemoryRegion backed by a physical

Peter Xu cdb3081269 memory: introduce IOMMUNotifier and its caps
IOMMU Notifier list is used for notifying IO address mapping changes.
Currently VFIO is the only user.

However it is possible that future consumer like vhost would like to
only listen to part of its notifications (e.g., cache invalidations).

This patch introduced IOMMUNotifier and IOMMUNotfierFlag bits for a
finer grained control of it.

IOMMUNotifier contains a bitfield for the notify consumer describing
what kind of notification it is interested in. Currently two kinds of
notifications are defined:

- IOMMU_NOTIFIER_MAP: for newly mapped entries (additions)
- IOMMU_NOTIFIER_UNMAP: for entries to be removed (cache invalidates)

When registering the IOMMU notifier, we need to specify one or multiple
types of messages to listen to.

When notifications are triggered, its type will be checked against the
notifier's type bits, and only notifiers with registered bits will be
notified.

(For any IOMMU implementation, an in-place mapping change should be
notified with an UNMAP followed by a MAP.)

what address_space_translate returns.

Because the semantics of the second parameter change, rename the
function to qemu_map_ram_ptr.

Paolo Bonzini b138e654a0 Revert "memory: Drop FlatRange.romd_mode"
This reverts commit 5b5660adf1,
as it breaks the UEFI guest firmware (known as ArmVirtPkg or AAVMF)
running in the "virt" machine type of "qemu-system-aarch64":

Contrary to the commit message, (a->mr == b->mr) does *not* imply
that (a->romd_mode == b->romd_mode): the pflash device model calls
memory_region_rom_device_set_romd() -- for switching between the above
modes --, and that function changes mr->romd_mode but the current
AddressSpaceDispatch's FlatRange keeps the old value. Therefore
region_del/region_add are not called on the KVM MemoryListener.

Markus Armbruster da34e65cb4 include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.h
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.

Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.

Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.

This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

Hollis Blanchard f2d089425d trace: separate MMIO tracepoints from TB-access tracepoints
Memory accesses to code which has previously been translated into a TB show up
in the MMIO path, so that they may invalidate the TB. It's extremely confusing
to mix those in with device MMIOs, so split them into their own tracepoint.

Hollis Blanchard 5a68be94ac trace: include CPU index in trace_memory_region_*()
Knowing which CPU performed an action is essential for understanding SMP guest
behavior.

However, cpu_physical_memory_rw() may be executed by a machine init function,
before any VCPUs are running, when there is no CPU running ('current_cpu' is
NULL). In this case, store -1 in the trace record as the CPU index. Trace
analysis tools may need to be aware of this special case.
