Paulo Zanoni ed1c9e2cf4 drm/i915: print a message when we detect an early Haswell SDV
The machines that fall in this category are the SDVs that have a PCI
ID starting with 0x0C. These are very early pre-production machines
and may not fully work. Other Haswell SDVs have PCI IDs that match the
real Haswell machines and we expect them to work better.

Even though they have problems, they still mostly work so I don't see
a reason to refuse loading our driver. But I do see a reason to reject
bug reports from these machines, so the message should help the bug
triagers.

As far as I know, we don't implement some workarounds that are
specific to these machines and suspend/resume may not work on most of
them, but besides this, they may work.

Chris Wilson 651d794fae drm/i915: Use Write-Through cacheing for the display plane on Iris
Haswell GT3e has the unique feature of supporting Write-Through cacheing
of objects within the eLLC/LLC. The purpose of this is to enable the display
plane to remain coherent whilst objects lie resident in the eLLC/LLC - so
that we, in theory, get the best of both worlds, perfect display and fast
access.

However, we still need to be careful as the CPU does not see the WT when
accessing the cache. In particular, this means that we need to flush the
cache lines after writing to an object through the CPU, and on
transitioning from a cached state to WT.

v2: Actually do the clflush on transition to WT, nagging by Ville.
v3: Flush the CPU cache after writes into WT objects.
v4: Rease onto LLC updates and report WT as "uncached" for
get_cache_level_ioctl to remain symmetric with set_cache_level_ioctl.

Chris Wilson 000433b67e drm/i915: Only do a chipset flush after a clflush
Now that we skip clflushes more often, return a boolean indicating
whether the clflush was actually performed, and only if it was do the
chipset flush. (Though on most of the architectures where the clflush will
be skipped, the chipset flush is a no-op!)

Chris Wilson 2c22569bba drm/i915: Update rules for writing through the LLC with the cpu
As mentioned in the previous commit, reads and writes from both the CPU
and GPU go through the LLC. This gives us coherency between the CPU and
GPU irrespective of the attribute settings either device sets. We can
use to avoid having to clflush even uncached memory.

Except for the scanout.

The scanout resides within another functional block that does not use
the LLC but reads directly from main memory. So in order to maintain
coherency with the scanout, writes to uncached memory must be flushed.
In order to optimize writes elsewhere, we start tracking whether an
framebuffer is attached to an object.

v2: Use pin_display tracking rather than fb_count (to ensure we flush
cursors as well etc) and only force the clflush along explicit writes to
the scanout paths (i.e. pin_to_display_plane and pwrite into scanout).

v3: Force the flush after hitting the slowpath in pwrite, as after
dropping the lock the object's cache domain may be invalidated. (Ville)

Chris Wilson cc98b413c1 drm/i915: Track when an object is pinned for use by the display engine
The display engine has unique coherency rules such that it requires
special handling to ensure that all writes to cursors, scanouts and
sprites are clflushed. This patch introduces the infrastructure to
simply track when an object is being accessed by the display engine.

v2: Explain the is_pin_display() magic as the sources for obj->pin_count
and their individual rules is not obvious. (Ville)

Ville Syrjälä adf3d35e4a drm/i915: Pass plane and crtc to intel_update_sprite_watermarks
We're going to want to know the crtc in the watermark code to avoid
doing more work than we have to. We should also pass the plane we're
disabling so that we know where to stick our watermark parameters
without having to go look the plane up.

Ben Widawsky 95f5301dd8 drm/i915: Update error capture for VMs
formerly: "drm/i915: Create VMAs (part 4) - Error capture"

Since the active/inactive lists are per VM, we need to modify the error
capture code to be aware of this, and also extend it to capture the
buffers from all the VMs. For now all the code assumes only 1 VM, but it
will become more generic over the next few patches.

NOTE: If the number of VMs in a real world system grows significantly
we'll have to focus on only capturing the guilty VM, or else it's likely
there won't be enough space for error capture.

v2: Squashed in the "part 6" which had dependencies on the mm_list
change. Since I've moved the mm_list change to an earlier point in the
series, we were able to accomplish it here and now.

Ben Widawsky ca191b1313 drm/i915: mm_list is per VMA
formerly: "drm/i915: Create VMAs (part 5) - move mm_list"

The mm_list is used for the active/inactive LRUs. Since those LRUs are
per address space, the link should be per VMx .

Because we'll only ever have 1 VMA before this point, it's not incorrect
to defer this change until this point in the patch series, and doing it
here makes the change much easier to understand.

Shamelessly manipulated out of Daniel:
"active/inactive stuff is used by eviction when we run out of address
space, so needs to be per-vma and per-address space. Bound/unbound otoh
is used by the shrinker which only cares about the amount of memory used
and not one bit about in which address space this memory is all used in.
Of course to actual kick out an object we need to unbind it from every
address space, but for that we have the per-object list of vmas."

Eviction code, like the rest of the converted code needs to be aware of
the address space for which it is evicting (or the everything case, all
addresses). With the updated bind/unbind interfaces of the last patch,

Ben Widawsky 07fe0b1280 drm/i915: plumb VM into bind/unbind code
As alluded to in several patches, and it will be reiterated later... A
VMA is an abstraction for a GEM BO bound into an address space.
Therefore it stands to reason, that the existing bind, and unbind are
the ones which will be the most impacted. This patch implements this,
and updates all callers which weren't already updated in the series
(because it was too messy).

This patch represents the bulk of an earlier, larger patch. I've pulled
out a bunch of things by the request of Daniel. The history is preserved
for posterity with the email convention of ">" One big change from the
original patch aside from a bunch of cropping is I've created an
i915_vma_unbind() function. That is because we always have the VMA
anyway, and doing an extra lookup is useful. There is a caveat, we
retain an i915_gem_object_ggtt_unbind, for the global cases which might
not talk in VMAs.

Daniel Vetter 43387b37fa drm/gem: create drm_gem_dumb_destroy
All the gem based kms drivers really want the same function to
destroy a dumb framebuffer backing storage object.

So give it to them and roll it out in all drivers.

This still leaves the option open for kms drivers which don't use GEM
for backing storage, but it does decently simplify matters for gem
drivers.

Chris Wilson 350ec881d9 drm/i915: Rename I915_CACHE_MLC_LLC to L3_LLC for Ivybridge
MLC_LLC was never validated for Sandybridge and was superseded by a new
level of cacheing for the GPU in Ivybridge. Update our names to be
consistent with usage, and in the process stop setting the unwanted bit
on Sandybridge.

Ville Syrjälä 53615a5e12 drm/i915: Store the watermark latency values in dev_priv
Rather than having to read the latency values out every time, just
store them in dev_priv.

On ILK and IVB there is a difference between some of the latency
values for different planes, so store the latency values for each
plane type separately, and apply the necesary fixups during init.

Ben Widawsky c37e220461 drm/i915: Add VM to pin
To verbalize it, one can say, "pin an object into the given address
space." The semantics of pinning remain the same otherwise.

Certain objects will always have to be bound into the global GTT.
Therefore, global GTT is a special case, and keep a special interface
around for it (i915_gem_obj_ggtt_pin).

Ben Widawsky a70a3148b0 drm/i915: Make proper functions for VMs
Earlier in the conversion sequence we attempted to quickly wedge in the
transitional interface as static inlines.

Now that we're sure these interfaces are sane, for easier debug and to
decrease code size (since many of these functions may be called quite a
bit), make them real functions

While at it, kill off the set_color interface. We'll always have the
VMA, or easily get to it.

Chris Wilson 2c1792a10b drm/i915: Tidy the macro casting by using an inline function
Some of our macros we trying to convert from an drm_device to a
drm_i915_private and then use the pointer inline. This is not only
cumbersome but prone to error. Replacing it with a typesafe function
should help catch those errors in future.

Chris Wilson 29ebf90f81 drm/i915: Squelch repeated reasoning for why FBC cannot be activated
Almost invariably the reason why FBC cannot be turned on is the same
every time (disabled via parameter, too many pipes, pipe too large etc)
as modesetting and framebuffer configuration changes less frequently
than trying to enable FBC.

Detangle the confusion that NOTRACE variants of the register read/write
routines were directly using the raw register access. We need for those
routines to reuse the common code for serializing register access and
ensuring the correct register power states. This is only possible now

intel_pm.c. It only bares a superficial resemblance to the reset of the
powermanagement code, so move it all into its own file. This is to ease
further patches to enforce serialised register access.

again. Since _reset suggests that we first need to have stuff
initialized (which isn't the case here) call it sanitze instead.

While at it also block out the rps disable introduced by the above
commit on ilk: We don't have any knowledge of ilk rps being broken in
similar ways. And the disable functions uses the default hw state
which is only read out when we're enabling rps. So essentially we've
been writing random grabage into that register.

Ben Widawsky 2f63315692 drm/i915: Create VMAs
Formerly: "drm/i915: Create VMAs (part 1)"

In a previous patch, the notion of a VM was introduced. A VMA describes
an area of part of the VM address space. A VMA is similar to the concept
in the linux mm. However, instead of representing regular memory, a VMA
is backed by a GEM BO. There may be many VMAs for a given object, one
for each VM the object is to be used in. This may occur through flink,
dma-buf, or a number of other transient states.

Currently the code depends on only 1 VMA per object, for the global GTT
(and aliasing PPGTT). The following patches will address this and make
the rest of the infrastructure more suited

to actual kick out an object we need to unbind it from every address
space, but for that we have the per-object list of vmas."

After we plumb our code to support multiple address spaces (VMs), there
are a few situations where we want to be able to traverse the list of
all address spaces in the system. Cases like eviction, or error state
collection are obvious example.

Every address space should support object allocation. It therefore makes
sense to have the allocator be part of the "superclass" which GGTT and
PPGTT will derive.

Since our maximum address space size is only 2GB we're not yet able to
avoid doing allocation/eviction; but we'd hope one day this becomes
almost irrelvant.

Ben Widawsky 853ba5d223 drm/i915: Move gtt and ppgtt under address space umbrella
The GTT and PPGTT can be thought of more generally as GPU address
spaces. Many of their actions (insert entries), state (LRU lists), and
many of their characteristics (size) can be shared. Do that.

The change itself doesn't actually impact most of the VMA/VM rework
coming up, it just fits in with the grand scheme of abstracting the GPU
VM operations. GGTT will usually be a special case where we either know
an object must be in the GGTT (dislay engine, workarounds, etc.).

The scratch page is left as part of the VM (even though it's currently
shared with the ppgtt code) because in the future when we have Full
PPGTT, I intend to create a separate scratch page for each.

Ben Widawsky 59124506ba drm/i915: store eLLC size
The eLLC cannot be determined by PCIID because as far as we know, even
machines supporting eLLC may not have it enabled, or fused off or
whatever. It's possible this isn't actually true, and at that point we
can switch to a DEV_INFO flag instead.

I've defined everything where the docs are clear, and left the rest as
magic.

But we need it before we set the pte_encode function pointers, which
happens really early, in gtt_init.

The problem with just doing the normal sequence earlier is we don't have
the ability to use forcewake until after the pte functions have been set
up.

Since all solutions are somewhat ugly (barring rewriting all the init
ordering), I've opted to do the detection really early, and the enabling
later - since the register to detect doesn't require forcewake.

Daniel Vetter 59cdb63d52 drm/i915: kill dev_priv->rps.lock
Now that the rps interrupt locking isn't clearly separated (at elast
conceptually) from all the other interrupt locking having a different
lock stopped making sense: It protects much more than just the rps
workqueue it started out with. But with the addition of VECS the
separation started to blurr and resulted in some more complex locking
for the ring interrupt refcount.

With this we can (again) unifiy the ringbuffer irq refcounts without
causing a massive confusion, but that's for the next patch.

Daniel Vetter db1b76ca6a drm/i915: don't frob mm.suspended when not using ums
In kernel modeset driver mode we're in full control of the chip,
always. So there's no need at all to set mm.suspended in
i915_gem_idle. Hence move that out into the leavevt ioctl. Since
i915_gem_idle doesn't suspend gem any more we can also drop the
re-enabling for KMS in the thaw function.

Also clean up the handling of mm.suspend at driver load by coalescing
all the assignments.

Stumbled over while reading through our resume code for unrelated
reasons.

v2: Shovel mm.suspended into the (newly created) ums dungeon as
suggested by Chris Wilson. The plan is that once we've completely
stopped relying on the register save/restore code we could shovel even
that in there.

v3: Improve the locking for the entervt/leavevt ioctls a bit by moving
the dev->struct_mutex locking outside of i915_gem_idle. Also don't
clear dev_priv->ums.mm_suspended for the kms case, we allocate it with

  AMD finally released the dynamic power management code for all their
  GPUs from r600->present day, this is great, off by default for now but
  also a huge amount of code, in fact it is most of this pull request.

  Since it landed there has been a lot of community testing and Alex has
  sent a lot of fixes for any bugs found so far.  I suspect radeon might
  now be the biggest kernel driver ever :-P p.s.  radeon.dpm=1 to enable

Ben Widawsky c6cfb32567 drm/i915: Embed drm_mm_node in i915 gem obj
Embedding the node in the obj is more natural in the transition to VMAs
which will also have embedded nodes. This change also helps transition
away from put_block to remove node.

Though it's quite an uncommon occurrence, it's somewhat convenient to not
fail at bind time because we cannot allocate the node. Though in
practice there are other allocations (like the request structure) which
would probably make this point not terribly useful.

Quoting Daniel:
Note that the only difference between put_block and remove_node is
that the former fills up the preallocation cache. Which we don't need
anyway and hence is just wasted space.

With the getters in place from the previous patch this members serves no
purpose other than saving one spare pointer chase, which will be killed
in the next patch anyway.

Moving to VMAs, this members adds unnecessary confusion since an object
may exist at different offsets in different VMs.

v2: Properly preserve the stolen offset. This code is a bit hacky but it
all goes away when we embed the drm_mm_node and removes the need for the
incorrect patch I submitted previously: "Use gtt_space->start for stolen

Ben Widawsky 80a74f7f9c drm/i915: Drop dev from pte_encode
The original pte_encode function needed the dev argument so we could do
platform specific handling via IS_GENX, etc. With the merging of a pte
encoding function there should never been a need to quirk away gen
specific details.

The patch doesn't do much but makes the upcoming reworks in gtt/ppgtt/mm
slightly (albeit, ever so) easier.

Ben Widawsky 6670a5a5c7 drm/i915: make PDE|PTE platform specific
Nothing outside of i915_gem_gtt.c and more specifically, the relevant
gen specific init function should need to know about number of PDEs, or
PTEs per PD. Exposing this will only lead to circumventing using the
upcoming VM abstraction.

To accomplish this, move the defines into the .c file, rename the PDE
define to be GEN6, and make the PTE count less of a magic number.

The remaining code in the global gtt setup is a bit messy, but an
upcoming patch will clean that one up.

Daniel Vetter 15bdd4cff4 drm/i915: consolidate pch pll enable sequence
It's been splattered over 3 different places all doing random things.
Now we have (mostly) the same sequence as i8xx/i9xx, but all called
from the crtc_enable hook (through the pll->enable function):
- write new dividers
- enable vco and wait for stable clocks
- write again for the pixel mutliplier

I've left the seemingly random 200 usec delay in there, just in case.

Also move the encoder->pre_pll_enable hook into the crtc_enable
function, at the same spot we currently have a hack to enable the lvds
port. Since that hack is now redundant, kill it.

While doing this patch I've learned the hard way that we can only fire
up the LVDS port if both the pch dpll _and_ the fdi rc pll are not yet
enabled. Otherwise things go haywire, at least on cpt.

v2: It is paramount to write the FPx divisors before we enable the
the vco by writing to the DPLL registers, for otherwise the divisors
won't get updated. This is in line with the i8xx/i9xx dpll.

v3: To keep the nice abstraction add a ->mode_set callback to set the
divisors. Also streamline the enabling/disabling code a bit by
removing some cargo-cult duplication and clearing registers where
possible in the ->disable hook.

Damien Lespiau 8a5729a373 drm/i915: Fix reason for per-chip disabling of FBC
When running on my snb machine, recent kernels display successively:

[drm:intel_update_fbc], fbc set to per-chip default
[drm:intel_update_fbc], fbc disabled per module param

But no module param is set. This happens because the check for the
module parameter uses a variable that has been overridden inside the
"per-chip default" code.

Fix up the logic and add another reason for the FBC to the be disabled.

In order to track down a batch buffer and context which
caused the ring to hang, store reference to bo into the request struct.
Request can also cause gpu to hang after the batch in the flush section
in the ring. To detect this add start of the flush portion offset into the

Daniel Vetter 66e985c035 drm/i915: hw state readout and cross-checking for shared dplls
Just the plumbing, all the modeset and enable code has not yet been
switched over to use the new state. It seems to be decently broken
anyway, at least wrt to handling of the special pixel mutliplier
enabling sequence. Follow-up patches will clean up that mess.

Another missing piece is more careful handling (and fixup) of the fp1
alternate divisor state. The BIOS most likely doesn't bother to
program that one to what we expect. So we need to be more careful with
comparing that state, both for cross checking but also when checking
for dpll sharing when acquiring shared dpll. Otherwise fastboot will
deny a few shared dpll configurations which would otherwise work.

v2: We need to memcpy the pipe config dpll hw state into the pll, for
otherwise the cross-check code will get angry.

v3: Don't forget to read the pch pll state in the crtc get_pipe_config
function for ibx/ilk platforms.

Daniel Vetter 5358901f99 drm/i915: display pll hw state readout and checking
Currently still with an empty register state, this will follow in a
next step. This one here just creates the new vfunc and uses it for
cross-checking, initial state takeover and the dpll assert function.

And add a FIXME for the ddi pll readout code, which still needs to be
converted over.

Daniel Vetter e2b7826742 drm/i915: switch crtc->shared_dpll from a pointer to an enum
Dealing with discrete enum values is simpler for hw state readout and
pipe config computations than pointers - having neat names instead of
chasing pointers should look better in the code.

This isn't a that good reason for pch plls, but on haswell we actually
have 3 different types of plls: WRPLL, SPLL and the DP clocks. Having
explicit names should help there.

Since this also adds the intel_crtc_to_shared_dpll helper to further
abstract away the crtc -> dpll relationship this will also help to
make the next patch simpler, which moves the shared dpll into the pipe
configuration.

Also note that for uniformity we have two special dpll ids: NONE for
pipes which need a shared pll but don't have one (yet) and private for
when there's a non-shared pll (e.g. per-pipe or per-port pll).

I've thought whether we should also add a 2nd enum for the type of the
pll we want (for really generic pll selection code) but thrown that
idea out again - likely there's too much platform craziness going on
to be able to share the pll selection logic much.

Since this touched all the shared_pll functions a bit I've also done
an s/intel_crtc/crtc/ replacement on a few of them.

v2: Kill DPLL_ID_NONE. It's probably better to call it DPLL_ID_INVALID and use
it to check that the compute config stage assigns a dpll to every pipe.
But since that code isn't ready yet until we move the dpll selection out
of the ->mode_set callback, there's no use for it.

Daniel Vetter e72f9fbf99 drm/i915: s/pch_pll/shared_dpll/
For fastboot we need some support to read out the sharing state of
plls, at least for platforms where they can be shared (or freely
assigned at least). Now for ivb we already have pretty extensive
infrastructure for tracking pch plls, and it took us an aweful lot of
tries to get that remotely right. Note that hsw could also share plls,
but even now they're already freely assignable. So we need this on
more than just ivb.

So on top of the usual fastboot fun pll sharing seems to be an
additional step up in fragility. Hence a common infrastructure for all
shared/freely assignable display plls seems to be in order.

The plan is to have a bit of dpll hw state readout code, which can be
used individually, but also to fill in the pipe config. The hw state
cross check code will then use that information to make sure that
after every modeset every pipe still is connected to a pll which still
has the correct configuration - a lot of the pch pll sharing bugs
where due to incorrect sharing.

We start this endeavour with a simple s/pch_pll/shared_dpll/ rename
job.

Daniel Vetter ee9300bb5f drm/i915: move find_pll callback to dev_priv->display
Now that the DP madness is cleared out, this is all only per-platform.
So move it out from the intel clock limits structure.

While at it drop the intel prefix on the static functions, call the
vtable entry find_dpll (since it's for the display pll) and rip out
the now unnecessary forward declarations.

Note that the parameters of ->find_dpll are still unchanged, but they
eventually need to be moved over to just take in a pipe configuration.
But currently a lot of things are still missing from the pipe
configuration (reflock, output-specific dpll limits and preferences,
downclocked dotclock). So this will happen in a later step.

Note that intel_g4x_limit has a peculiar case where it selects
intel_limits_i9xx_sdvo as the limit. This is pretty bogus and also not
used since the only output types left are DP and native TV-out which
both use special pre-tuned dpll values.

v2: Re-add comment for the find_pll callback (requested by Paulo) and
elaborate on why the transformation is correct for g4x platforms (to
clarify a review question from Paulo). Double up on that by adding a
WARN as suggested by Paulo Zanoni on irc.

v3: Initialize limits to NULL since gcc is now unhappy.

v4: v2/3 will blow up with a NULL dereference in ->find_dpll for dp and
TV-out ports, spotted by Paulo on irc. So just give up on this madness for
now, and leave this to be fixed in a later patch.

v5: Since the ever-so-slight change for g4x might result in some dpll
parameter computation failing spuriously where before it didn't for
ports with preset dpll settings (DP & TV-out) override this. For
paranoia also do it in the ilk+ code.

Paulo Zanoni 3c4ca58c12 drm/i915: add enable_ips module option
IPS is still enabled by default. Feature requested by the power
management team.

This should also help testing the feature on some early pre-production
hardware where there were relationship problems between IPS and PSR.

Paulo Zanoni 4c4ff43a69 drm/i915: add "enable" argument to intel_update_sprite_watermarks
Because we want to call it from the "sprite disable" paths, since on
Haswell we need to update the sprite watermarks when we disable
sprites.

For now, all this patch does is to add the "enable" argument and call
intel_update_sprite_watermarks from inside ivb_disable_plane. This
shouldn't change how the code behaves because on
sandybridge_update_sprite_wm we just ignore the "!enable" case. The
patches that implement Haswell watermarks will make use of the changes
introduced by this patch.

enough that kmalloc in seq_file will fail.

Imre Deak df97729f1b drm/i915: add msecs_to_jiffies_timeout to guarantee minimum duration
We need this to avoid premature timeouts whenever scheduling a timeout
based on the current jiffies value. For an explanation see [1].
The following patches will take the helper into use.

Once the more generic solution proposed in the thread at [1] is accepted
this patch can be reverted while keeping the follow-up patches.

Paulo Zanoni 1011d8c437 drm/i915: remove intel_update_linetime_watermarks
The spec says the linetime watermarks must be programmed before
enabling any display low power watermarks, but we're currently
updating the linetime watermarks after we call intel_update_watermarks
(and only at crtc_mode_set, not at crtc_{enable,disable}). So IMHO the
best way guarantee the linetime watermarks will be updated before the
low power watermarks is inside the update_wm function, because it's
the function that enables low power watermarks. And since Haswell is
the only platform that has linetime watermarks, let's completely kill
the "intel_update_linetime_watermarks" abstraction and just use the
intel_update_watermarks abstraction by creating haswell_update_wm.

For now haswell_update_wm is still calling sandybridge_update_wm, but
in the future I plan to implement a function specific to Haswell.

More seriously, this is actually better since a pipe_config can be
thrown away if the modeset compute config stage fails. Whereas any
state stored in dev_prive needs to be painstakingly restored, since
otherwise a dpms off/on will wreak massive havoc. Yes, that even
applies to state only used in ->mode_set callbacks, since we need to
call those even for dpms on when the Haswell power well cleared
everything out.

On VLV, the Punit doesn't automatically drop the GPU to it's minimum
voltage level when entering RC6, so we arm a timer to do it for us from
the RPS interrupt handler.  It'll generally only fire when we go idle
(or if for some reason there's a long delay between RPS interrupts), but
won't be re-armed again until the next RPS event, so shouldn't affect
power consumption after we go idle and it triggers.

Kenneth Graunke 2d04befb94 drm/i915: Add PTE encoding function to the gtt/ppgtt vtables.
Sandybridge/Ivybridge, Bay Trail, and Haswell all have slightly
different page table entry formats.  Rather than polluting one function
with generation checks, simply use a function pointer and set up the
correct PTE encoding function at startup.

v2: Move the gen6_gtt_pte_t typedef to i915_drv.h so that the function
    pointers and implementations have identical signatures.  Also remove

Check the VBT to see if the machine has inverted FDI RX polarity on
CPT. Based on this bit, set the appropriate bit on the TRANS_CHICKEN2
registers.

We disable hoptplug detection when we encounter a hotplug event
storm. Still hotplug detection is required on some outputs (like
Display Port). The interrupt storm may be only temporary (on certain
Dell Laptops for instance it happens at certain charging states of
the system). Thus we enable it after a certain grace period (2 minutes).
Should the interrupt storm persist it will be detected immediately
and it will be disabled again.

Add a hotplug IRQ storm detection (triggered when a hotplug interrupt
fires more than 5 times / sec).
Rationale:
Despite of the many attempts to fix the problem with noisy hotplug
interrupt lines we are still seeing systems which have issues:
Once cause of noise seems to be bad routing of the hotplug line
on the board: cross talk from other signals seems to cause erronous
hotplug interrupts. This has been documented as an erratum for the
the i945GM chipset and thus hotplug support was disabled for this
chipset model but others seem to have this problem, too.

We have seen this issue on a G35 motherboard for example:
Even different motherboards of the same model seem to behave
differently: while some only see only around 10-100 interrupts/s
others seem to see 5k or more.
We've also observed a dependency on the selected video mode.

Also on certain laptops interrupt noise seems to occur duing
battery charging when the battery is at a certain charge levels.

Thus we add a simple algorithm here that detects an 'interrupt storm'
condition.

Ville Syrjälä 42b5aeabe9 drm/i915: IVB/HSW have 32 fence register
Increase the number of fence registers to 32 on IVB/HSW. VLV however
only has 16 fence registers according to the docs.

Increasing the number of fences was attempted before [1], but there was
some uncertainty about the maximum CPU fence number for FBC. Since then
BSpec has been updated to state that there are in fact 32 fence registers,
and the CPU fence number field in the SNB_DPFC_CTL_SA register is 5 bits,
and the CPU fence number field in the ILK_DPFC_CONTROL register must be
zero. So now it all makes sense.

Ben Widawsky 31c7738866 drm/i915: Better overclock support
Most importantly this will allow users to set overclock frequencies in
sysfs. Previously the max was limited by the RP0 max as opposed to the
overclock max. This is useful if one wants to either limit the max
overclock frequency, or set the minimum frequency to be in the overclock
range. It also fixes an issue where if one sets the max frequency to be
below the overclock max, they wouldn't be able to set back the proper
overclock max.

In addition I've added a couple of other bits:
Show the overclock freq. as max in sysfs
Print the overclock max in debugfs.
Print a warning if the user sets the min frequency to be in the
overclock range.

In this patch I've decided to store the hw_max when we read it from the
pcode at init. The reason I do this is the pcode reads can fail, and are
slow.

possible to end up with platforms that normally have PCH but that PCH
doesn't actually exist. In many cases, this is easily remedied with
setting 0 pipes. This covers the other corners.

Requiring this is a symptom of improper code splitting (using
HAS_PCH_SPLIT instead of proper GEN checking, basically). I do not want
to fix this.

We need to be able to read out the hw state code for a bunch
of reasons:
- Correctly disabling boot-up/resume state.
- Pure paranoia.

Since not all of the pipe configuration is e.g. relevant for
fastboot (or at least we can allow some wiggle room in some
parameters, like the clocks), we need to add a strict_checking
parameter to intel_pipe_config_compare for fastboot.

For now intel_pipe_config_compare should be fully paranoid and
check everything that the hw state readout code supports. Which
for this infrastructure code is nothing.

I've gone a bit overboard with adding 3 get_pipe_config functions:
The ilk version will differ with the next patch, so it's not too
onerous.

v2: Don't check the hw config if the pipe is off, since an enabled,
but dpms off crtc will obviously have tons of difference with the hw
state.

Imre Deak 2db76d7c3c lib/scatterlist: sg_page_iter: support sg lists w/o backing pages
The i915 driver uses sg lists for memory without backing 'struct page'
pages, similarly to other IO memory regions, setting only the DMA
address for these. It does this, so that it can program the HW MMU
tables in a uniform way both for sg lists with and without backing pages.

Without a valid page pointer we can't call nth_page to get the current
page in __sg_page_iter_next, so add a helper that relevant users can
call separately. Also add a helper to get the DMA address of the current
page (idea from Daniel).

Egbert Eich 1d843f9de4 DRM/I915: Add enum hpd_pin to intel_encoder.
To clean up hotplug support we add a new enum to intel_encoder:
enum hpd_pin. It allows the encoder to request a hpd line but leave
the details which IRQ is responsible on which chipset generation
to i915_irq.c.
This way requesting hotplug support will become really simple on
the encoder/connector level.

Paulo Zanoni 2124b72e62 drm/i915: don't disable the power well yet
We're still not 100% ready to disable the power well, so don't disable
it for now. When we disable it we break the audio driver (because some
of the audio registers are on the power well) and machines with eDP on
port D (because it doesn't use TRANSCODER_EDP).

Also, instead of just reverting the code, add a Kernel option to let
us disable it if we want. This will allow us to keep developing and
testing the feature while it's not enabled.

This fixes problems caused by the following commit:

Imre Deak 67d5a50c04 drm/i915: handle walking compact dma scatter lists
So far the assumption was that each dma scatter list entry contains only
a single page. This might not hold in the future, when we'll introduce
compact scatter lists, so prepare for this everywhere in the i915 code
where we walk such a list.

We'll fix the place _creating_ these lists separately in the next patch
to help the reviewing/bisectability.

Ben Widawsky 8c123e549f drm/i915: Capture current context on error
On error, this represents the state of the currently running context at
the time it was loaded.

Unfortunately, since we're hung and can't switch out the context this
may not tell us too much about the most current state of the context,
but does give clues about what has happened since loading.

Thanks to recent doc updates, we have a little more confidence regarding
what is actually in this memory, and perhaps it will help us gain more
insight into certain bugs. AFAICT, the most interesting info is in the
first page. To save space, we only capture the first page. In the
future, we might want to dump more.

Damien Lespiau 3e68320ef8 drm/i915: Preserve the FDI line reversal override bit on CPT
The FDI link has supported link reversal to make the PCB layout
engineer's life easier for quite a while and we have always presered
this bit as we programmed FDI_RX_CTL with a read/modify/write sequence.

We're trying to take a bit more control over what the BIOS leaves in
various register and with the introduction of DDI, started to program
FDI_RX_CTL fully.

There's a fused bit to indicate DMI link reversal and FDI defaults to
mirroring that configuration. We have a bit to override that behaviour
that we need to preserve from the BIOS.

Ben Widawsky 41907ddc1b drm/i915: Fix gen2 mappable calculations
When I refactored the code initially, I forgot that gen2 uses a
different bar for the CPU mappable aperture. The agp-less code knows
nothing of generations less than 5, so we have to expand the gtt_probe
function to include the mappable base and end.

We have more than one sprite, so a boolean simply won't cut it.
Turn sprite_scaling_enabled into a bitmask and track the state
of sprite scaler for each sprite independently.

Also don't re-enable LP watermarks until the sprite registers
have actually been written, and thus sprite scaling has really
been disabled.

i915 driver needs to do modeset when
1. system resumes from sleep
2. lid is opened

In PM_SUSPEND_MEM state, all the GPEs are cleared when system resumes,
thus it is the i915_resume code does the modeset rather than intel_lid_notify().

But in PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state, this will be broken because
system is still responsive to the lid events.
1. When we close the lid in Freeze state, intel_lid_notify() sets modeset_on_lid.
2. When we reopen the lid, intel_lid_notify() will do a modeset,
   before the system is resumed.

three different modeset flags are introduced in this patch
MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN: do modeset on next lid open event
MODESET_DONE:  modeset already done
MODESET_SUSPENDED:  suspended, only do modeset when system is resumed

In this way,
1. when lid is closed, MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN is set so that
   we'll do modeset on next lid open event.
2. when lid is opened, MODESET_DONE is set
   so that duplicate lid open events will be ignored.
3. when system suspends, MODESET_SUSPENDED is set.
   In this case, we will not do modeset on any lid events.

Plus, locking mechanism is also introduced to avoid racing.

Daniel didn't like the color of that patch series, and so I asked him to
start something which appealed to his sense of color. The preceding

One immediately obvious thing to implement is our gmch probing. The init
function was getting massively bloated. Fundamentally, all that's needed
from GMCH probing is the GTT size, and the stolen size. It makes design
sense to put the mappable calculation in there as well, but the code
turns out a bit nicer without it (IMO)

The intel_gtt bridge thing is still here, but the subsequent patches
will finish ripping that out.

At the moment only cosmetics, but being able to initialize/cleanup
arbitrary ppgtt address spaces paves the way to have more than one of
them ... Just in case we ever get around to implementing real
per-process address spaces. Note that in that case another vfunc for
ppgtt would be beneficial though. But that can wait until the code
grows a second place which initializes ppgtts.

Like for the global gtt we want a notch more flexibility here. Only
big change (besides a few tiny function parameter adjustments) was to
move gen6_ppgtt_insert_entries up (and remove _sg_ from its name, we
only have one kind of insert_entries since the last gtt cleanup).

We could also extract the platform ppgtt setup/teardown code a bit
better, but I don't care that much.

With this we have the hw details of pte writing nicely hidden away
behind a bit of abstraction. Which should pave the way for
different/multiple ppgtts (e.g. what we need for real ppgtt support).

Daniel Vetter 7faf1ab2ff drm/i915: vfuncs for gtt_clear_range/insert_entries
We have a few too many differences here, so finally take the prepared
abstraction and run with it. A few smaller changes are required to get
things into shape:

- move i915_cache_level up since we need it in the gt funcs
- split up i915_ggtt_clear_range and move the two functions down to
  where the relevant insert_entries functions are
- adjustments to a few function parameter lists

Now we have 2 functions which deal with the gen6+ global gtt
(gen6_ggtt_ prefix) and 2 functions which deal with the legacy gtt
code in the intel-gtt.c fake agp driver (i915_ggtt_ prefix).

Init is still a bit a mess, but honestly I don't care about that.

One thing I've thought about while deciding on the exact interfaces is
a flag parameter for ->clear_range: We could use that to decide
between writing invalid pte entries or scratch pte entries. In case we
ever get around to fixing all our bugs which currently prevent us from
filling the gtt with empty ptes for the truly unused ranges ...

Daniel Vetter d8157a3687 drm/i915: extract ums suspend/resume into i915_ums.c
Similarly to how i915_dma.c is shaping up to be the dungeon hole for
all things supporting dri1, create a new one to hide all the crazy
things which are only really useful for ums support. Biggest part is
the register suspend/resume support.

Unfortunately a lot of it is still intermingled with bits and pieces
we might still need, so needs more analysis and needs to stay in
i915_suspend.c for now.

Daniel Vetter f69061bedd drm/i915: create a race-free reset detection
With the previous patch the state transition handling of the reset
code itself is now (hopefully) race free and solid. But that still
leaves out everyone else - with the various lock-free wait paths
we have there's the possibility that the reset happens between the
point where we read the seqno we should wait on and the actual wait.

And if __wait_seqno then never sees the RESET_IN_PROGRESS state, we'll
happily wait for a seqno which will in all likelyhood never signal.

In practice this is not a big problem since the X server gets
constantly interrupted, and can then submit more work (hopefully) to
unblock everyone else: As soon as a new seqno write lands, all waiters
will unblock. But running the i-g-t reset testcase ZZ_hangman can
expose this race, especially on slower hw with fewer cpu cores.

Now looking forward to ARB_robustness and friends that's not the best
possible behaviour, hence this patch adds a reset_counter to be able
to detect any reset, even if a given thread never observed the
in-progress state.

The important part is to correctly order things:
- The write side needs to increment the counter after any seqno gets
  reset.  Hence we need to do that at the end of the reset work, and
  again wake everyone up. We also need to place a barrier in between
  any possible seqno changes and the counter increment, since any
  unlock operations only guarantee that nothing leaks out, but not
  that at later load operation gets moved ahead.
- On the read side we need to ensure that no reset can sneak in and
  invalidate the seqno. In all cases we can use the one-sided barrier
  that unlock operations guarantee (of the lock protecting the
  respective seqno/ring pair) to ensure correct ordering. Hence it is
  sufficient to place the atomic read before the mutex/spin_unlock and
  no additional barriers are required.

The end-result of all this is that we need to wake up everyone twice
in a reset operation:
- First, before the reset starts, to get any lockholders of the locks,
  so that the reset can proceed.
- Second, after the reset is completed, to allow waiters to properly
  and reliably detect the reset condition and bail out.

I admit that this entire reset_counter thing smells a bit like
overkill, but I think it's justified since it makes it really explicit
what the bail-out condition is. And we need a reset counter anyway to
implement ARB_robustness, and imo with finer-grained locking on the
horizont this is the most resilient scheme I could think of.

v2: Drop spurious change in the wait_for_error EXIT_COND - we only
need to wait until we leave the reset-in-progress wedged state.

v3: Don't play tricks with barriers in the throttle ioctl, the
spin_unlock is barrier enough.

I've also considered using a little helper to grab the current
reset_counter, but then decided that hiding the atomic_read isn't a
great idea, since having it explicitly show up in the code is a nice
remainder to reviews to check the memory barriers.

__wait_seqno in the end variable assignments.

Daniel Vetter 1f83fee08d drm/i915: clear up wedged transitions
We have two important transitions of the wedged state in the current
code:

- 0 -> 1: This means a hang has been detected, and signals to everyone
  that they please get of any locks, so that the reset work item can
  do its job.

- 1 -> 0: The reset handler has completed.

Now the last transition mixes up two states: "Reset completed and
successful" and "Reset failed". To distinguish these two we do some
tricks with the reset completion, but I simply could not convince
myself that this doesn't race under odd circumstances.

Hence split this up, and add a new terminal state indicating that the
hw is gone for good.

Also add explicit #defines for both states, update comments.

v2: Split out the reset handling bugfix for the throttle ioctl.

v3: s/tmp/wedged/ sugested by Chris Wilson. Also fixup up a rebase
error which prevented this patch from actually compiling.

v4: To unify the wedged state with the reset counter, keep the
reset-in-progress state just as a flag. The terminally-wedged state is
now denoted with a big number.

WEDGED & RESET_IN_PROGRESS needs to be true for the code to be
correct.

v6: Fixup logic errors introduced with the wedged+reset_counter
unification. Since WEDGED implies reset-in-progress (in a way we're
terminally stuck in the dead-but-reset-not-completed state), we need
ensure that we check for this everywhere. The specific bug was in
wait_for_error, which would simply have timed out.

v7: Extract an inline i915_reset_in_progress helper to make the code
more readable. Also annote the reset-in-progress case with an
unlikely, to help the compiler optimize the fastpath. Do the same for
the terminally wedged case with i915_terminally_wedged.

And, move it to where the rest of the logic is.

There is some slight functionality changes. There was extra paranoid
checks in AGP code making sure we never do idle maps on gen2 parts. That
was not duplicated as the simple PCI id check should do the right thing.

v2: use IS_GEN5 && IS_MOBILE check instead. For now, this is the same as
IS_IRONLAKE_M but is more future proof. The workaround docs hint that
more than one platform may be effected, but we've never seen such a

Ville Syrjälä 55bc60db59 drm/i915: Add "Automatic" mode for the "Broadcast RGB" property
Add a new "Automatic" mode to the "Broadcast RGB" range property.
When selected the driver automagically selects between full range and
limited range output.

Based on CEA-861 [1] guidelines, limited range output is selected if the
mode is a CEA mode, except 640x480. Otherwise full range output is used.
Additionally DVI monitors should most likely default to full range
always.

As per DP1.2a [2] DisplayPort should always use full range for 18bpp, and
otherwise will follow CEA-861 rules.

NOTE: The default value for the property will now be "Automatic"
so some people may be affected in case they're relying on the
current full range default.

Ben Widawsky 5d4545aef5 drm/i915: Create a gtt structure
The purpose of the gtt structure is to help isolate our gtt specific
properties from the rest of the code (in doing so it help us finish the
isolation from the AGP connection).

The following members are pulled out (and renamed):
gtt_start
gtt_total
gtt_mappable_end
gtt_mappable
gtt_base_addr
gsm

The gtt structure will serve as a nice place to put gen specific gtt
routines in upcoming patches. As far as what else I feel belongs in this
structure: it is meant to encapsulate the GTT's physical properties.
This is why I've not added fields which track various drm_mm properties,
or things like gtt_mtrr (which is itself a pretty transient field).

With the assertion from the previous patch in place, it should be safe
to get rid gtt_mappable_total. Keeps things saner to not have to track
the same info in two places.

In order to keep the diff as simple as possible and keep with the
existing gtt_setup semantics we opt to keep gtt_mappable_end. It's not
as consistent with the 'total' used in the previous patch, but that can
be fixed later.

The iomapping of the register region has historically been a uint32_t
for the obvious reason that our PTE size was always 4b. In the future
however, we cannot make this assumption.

By making the type void, it makes the upcoming pointer math we will do
much easier, and hopefully gives the compiler opportunities to warn us
when we do stupid things.

This removes an unused field from the AGP structure and moves it into
the dev_priv structure (with a slightly better name). This builds upon
the kill-agp series already merged.

GSM is a well defined term in the bspec:
GSM: Graphics Stolen Memory

GTT stolen space is defined for storage of the GFX GTT entries in
physical memory. IA can not access GSM directly , it can only access via
GTTMMADR. GT can access GSM directly or through GTTMMADR.

This is not the entire stolen space.

    drm/i915: Borrow our struct_mutex for the direct reclaim

added a nice trick to steal the struct_mutex lock in the shrinker if
it's the current task holding it. But this also caused the requirement
that every place which allocates memory needs to be careful about the
gem state of objects, since the shrinker could have pulled the rug out
from under it. We've usually solved this by carefully preallocating
things or ensure that buffers are pinned already.

But the shrinker also reaps mmap offset, so allocating those needs to
be careful, too. Now that code has been factored out into some common
helpers, so either we have fragile code depending upon the common
helper not doing something we don't want it to do. Or we need to
reimplement the mmap offset creation and so also leak implementation
details into our code.

Since this all results in leaky abstraction, cop out by disabling the
lock borrowing trick while calling down into the helpers. That way our
craziness is nicely confined to files in drm/i915.

Now that Chris Wilson demonstrated that the key for stability on early
gen 2 is to simple _never_ exchange the physical backing storage of
batch buffers I've tried a stab at a kernel solution. Doesn't look too
nefarious imho, now that I don't try to be too clever for my own good
any more.

v2: After discussing the various techniques, we've decided to always blit
batches on the suspect devices, but allow userspace to opt out of the
kernel workaround assume full responsibility for providing coherent
batches. The principal reason is that avoiding the blit does improve
performance in a few key microbenchmarks and also in cairo-trace
replays.

Daniel Vetter 09153000b8 drm/i915: rework locking for intel_dpio|sbi_read|write
Spinning for up to 200 us with interrupts locked out is not good. So
let's just spin (and even that seems to be excessive).

And we don't call these functions from interrupt context, so this is
not required. Besides that doing anything in interrupt contexts which
might take a few hundred us is a no-go. So just convert the entire
thing to a mutex. Also move the mutex-grabbing out of the read/write
functions (add a WARN_ON(!is_locked)) instead) since all callers are
nicely grouped together.

Finally the real motivation for this change: Dont grab the modeset
mutex in the dpio debugfs file, we don't need that consistency. And
correctness of the dpio interface is ensured with the dpio_lock.

Wrongly set-up interrupts also lead to broken hw-based load-detection
on at least GM45, resulting in ghost VGA/TV-out outputs.

To fix this, delay the hotplug register setup until after all outputs
are set up, by moving it into a new dev_priv->display.hpd_irq_callback.
We might also move the PCH_SPLIT platforms to such a setup eventually.

Another funny part is that we need to delay the fbdev initial config
probing until after the hpd regs are setup, for otherwise it'll detect
ghost outputs. But we can only enable the hpd interrupt handling
itself (and the output polling) _after_ that initial scan, due to
massive locking brain-damage in the fbdev setup code. Add a big
comment to explain this cute little dragon lair.

v2: Encapsulate all the fbdev handling by wrapping the move call into
intel_fbdev_initial_config in intel_fb.c. Requested by Chris Wilson.

Paulo Zanoni 68d18ad7fb drm/i915: set the LPT FDI RX polarity reversal bit when needed
If we fail to set the bit when needed we get some nice FDI link
training failures (AKA "black screen on VGA output").

While we don't really know how to properly choose whether we need to
set the bit or not (VBT?), just read the initial value set by the BIOS

We need this code to init the PCH SSC refclk and the FDI registers.
The BIOS does this too and that's why VGA worked before this patch,
until you tried to suspend the machine...

This patch implements the "Sequence to enable CLKOUT_DP for FDI usage
and configure PCH FDI/IO" from our documentation.

Chris Wilson e9b73c6739 drm/i915: Reduce memory pressure during shrinker by preallocating swizzle pages
On a machine with bit17 swizzling, we need to store the bit17 of the
physical page address in put-pages. This requires a memory allocation,
on average less than a page, which may be difficult to satisfy is the
request to put-pages is on behalf of the shrinker. We could allow that
allocation to pull from the reserved memory pools, but it seems much
safer to preallocate the array for tiled objects on affected machines.

Daniel Vetter e69d0bc1c6 drm/i915: extract common link_m_n helpers
Both the dp and fdi code use the exact same computations (ignore minor
differences in conversion between bits and bytes).

This makes it even more apparent that we have a _massive_ mess between
cpu transcoder/fdi link/pch transcoder and pch link settings. And also
that we have hilarious amounts of confusion between edp and dp
(despite that they're identical at a link level).

Daniel Vetter 9ee32fea5f drm/i915: irq-drive the dp aux communication
At least on the platforms that have a dp aux irq and also have it
enabled - vlvhsw should have one, too. But I don't have a machine to
test this on. Judging from docs there's no dp aux interrupt for gm45.

Also, I only have an ivb cpu edp machine, so the dp aux A code for
snb/ilk is untested.

For dpcd probing when nothing is connected it slashes about 5ms of cpu
time (cpu time is now negligible), which agrees with 3 * 5 400 usec
timeouts.

A previous version of this patch increases the time required to go
through the dp_detect cycle (which includes reading the edid) from
around 33 ms to around 40 ms. Experiments indicated that this is
purely due to the irq latency - the hw doesn't allow us to queue up
dp aux transactions and hence irq latency directly affects throughput.
gmbus is much better, there we have a 8 byte buffer, and we get the
irq once another 4 bytes can be queued up.

But by using the pm_qos interface to request the lowest possible cpu
wake-up latency this slowdown completely disappeared.

Since all our output detection logic is single-threaded with the
mode_config mutex right now anyway, I've decide not ot play fancy and
to just reuse the gmbus wait queue. But this would definitely prep the
way to run dp detection on different ports in parallel

v2: Add a timeout for dp aux transfers when using interrupts - the hw
_does_  prevent this with the hw-based 400 usec timeout, but if the
irq somehow doesn't arrive we're screwed. Lesson learned while
developing this ;-)

v3: While at it also convert the busy-loop to wait_for_atomic, so that
we don't run the risk of an infinite loop any more.

v4: Ensure we have the smallest possible irq latency by using the
pm_qos interface.

v5: Add a comment to the code to explain why we frob pm_qos. Suggested
by Chris Wilson.

v6: Disable dp irq for vlv, that's easier than trying to get at docs
and hw.

v7: Squash in a fix for Haswell that Paulo Zanoni tracked down - the
dp aux registers aren't at a fixed offset any more, but can be on the
PCH while the DP port is on the cpu die.

Daniel Vetter 28c70f162a drm/i915: use the gmbus irq for waits
We need two special things to properly wire this up:
- Add another argument to gmbus_wait_hw_status to pass in the
  correct interrupt bit in gmbus4.
- Since we can only get an irq for one of the two events we want,
  hand-roll the wait_event_timeout code so that we wake up every
  jiffie and can check for NAKs. This way we also subsume gmbus
  support for platforms without interrupts (or where those are not
  yet enabled).

The important bit really is to only enable one gmbus interrupt source
at the same time - with that piece of lore figured out, this seems to
work flawlessly.

Ben Widawsky rightfully complained the lack of measurements for the
claimed benefits (especially since the first version was actually
broken and fell back to bit-banging). Previously reading the 256 byte
hdmi EDID takes about 72 ms here. With this patch it's down to 33 ms.
Given that transfering the 256 bytes over i2c at wire speed takes
20.5ms alone, the reduction in additional overhead is rather nice.

v2: Chris Wilson wondered whether GMBUS4 might contain some set bits
when booting up an hence result in some spurious interrupts. Since we
clear GMBUS4 after every wait and we do gmbus transfer really early in
the setup sequence to detect displays the window is small, but still
be paranoid and clear it properly.

v3: Clarify the comment that gmbus irq generation can only support one
kind of event, why it bothers us and how we work around that limit.

Daniel Vetter 52d7ecedac drm/i915: reorder setup sequence to have irqs for output setup
Otherwise the new&shiny irq-driven gmbus and dp aux code won't work that
well. Noticed since the dp aux code doesn't have an automatic fallback
with a timeout (since the hw provides for that already).

v2: Simple move drm_irq_install before intel_modeset_gem_init, as
suggested by Ben Widawsky.

v3: Now that interrupts are enabled before all connectors are fully
set up, we might fall over serving a HPD interrupt while things are
still being set up. Instead of jumping through massive hoops and
complicating the code with a separate hpd irq enable step, simply
block out the hotplug work item from doing anything until things are
in place.

v4: Actually, we can enable hotplug processing only after the fbdev is
fully set up, since we call down into the fbdev from the hotplug work
functions. So stick the hpd enabling right next to the poll helper
initialization.

v5: We need to enable irqs before intel_modeset_init, since that
function sets up the outputs.

v6: Fixup cleanup sequence, too.

- Unconfuse one place about enum pipe vs enum transcoder - for the pch
  transcoder we actually use the pipe enum. Fixup the other cases
  where we assign the pipe to the cpu transcoder with explicit casts.
- Declare the mch_lock properly in a header.

There is still a decent mess in intel_bios.c about __iomem, but heck,
this is x86 and we're allowed to do that.

Chris Wilson 42dcedd4f2 drm/i915: Use a slab for object allocation
The primary purpose of this was to debug some use-after-free memory
corruption that was causing an OOPS inside drm/i915. As it turned out
the corruption was being caused elsewhere and i915.ko as a major user of
many objects was being hit hardest.

Indeed as we do frequent the generic kmalloc caches, dedicating one to
ourselves (or at least naming one for us depending upon the core) aids
debugging our own slab usage.

Chris Wilson c1ad11fce8 drm/i915: Allow objects to be created with no backing pages, but stolen space
In order to accommodate objects that are not backed by struct pages, but
instead point into a contiguous region of stolen space, we need to make
various changes to avoid dereferencing obj->pages or obj->base.filp.

First introduce a marker for the stolen object, that specifies its
offset into the stolen region and implies that it has no backing pages.

Chris Wilson 11be49eb4d drm/i915: Delay allocation of stolen space for FBC
As FBC is commonly disabled due to limitations of the chipset upon
output configurations, on many systems FBC is never enabled. For those
systems, it is advantageous to make use of the stolen memory for other
objects and so we defer allocation of the FBC chunk until we actually
require it. This increases the likelihood of that allocation failing,
but that in turns means that we are already taking advantage of the
stolen memory!

As well as delaying the allocation from driver initialisation until the
first use of FBC, we also return the stolen block after we finish using
it - allowing greater flexibility in our usage of stolen space. A side
effect of this is that we can then attempt to allocate only the required
amount of space (with a little slack to reduce reallocation rate and
avoid fragmentation).

Chris Wilson e12a2d53ae drm/i915: Fix detection of base of stolen memory
The routine to query the base of stolen memory was using the wrong
registers and the wrong encodings on virtually every platform.

It was not until the G33 refresh, that a PCI config register was
introduced that explicitly said where the stolen memory was. Prior to
865G there was not even a register that said where the end of usable
low memory was and where the stolen memory began (or ended depending
upon chipset). Before then, one has to look at the BIOS memory maps to
find the Top of Memory. Alas that is not exported by arch/x86 and so we
have to resort to disabling stolen memory on gen2 for the time being.

Then SandyBridge enlarged the PCI register to a full 32-bits and change
the encoding of the address, so even though we happened to be querying
the right register, we read the wrong bits and ended up using address 0
for our stolen data, i.e. notably FBC.

Paulo Zanoni affa935440 drm/i915: add HAS_DDI check
And use it whenever we call code that uses the DDIs. We already have
intel_ddi.c and prefix every function with intel_ddi_something instead of
haswell_something, so I think replacing the checks with HAS_DDI makes more
sense. Just a cosmetical change, yes I know, but I have this OCD...

Chris Wilson 9d7730914f drm/i915: Preallocate next seqno before touching the ring
Based on the work by Mika Kuoppala, we realised that we need to handle
seqno wraparound prior to committing our changes to the ring. The most
obvious point then is to grab the seqno inside intel_ring_begin(), and
then to reuse that seqno for all ring operations until the next request.
As intel_ring_begin() can fail, the callers must already be prepared to
handle such failure and so we can safely add further checks.

This patch looks like it should be split up into the interface
changes and the tweaks to move seqno wrapping from the execbuffer into
the core seqno increment. However, I found no easy way to break it into
incremental steps without introducing further broken behaviour.

v2: Mika found a silly mistake and a subtle error in the existing code;
inside i915_gem_retire_requests() we were resetting the sync_seqno of
the target ring based on the seqno from this ring - which are only
related by the order of their allocation, not retirement. Hence we were
applying the optimisation that the rings were synchronised too early,
fortunately the only real casualty there is the handling of seqno
wrapping.

v3: Do not forget to reset the sync_seqno upon module reinitialisation,
ala resume.

Ben Widawsky e76e9aebcd drm/i915: Stop using AGP layer for GEN6+
As a quick hack we make the old intel_gtt structure mutable so we can
fool a bunch of the existing code which depends on elements in that data
structure. We can/should try to remove this in a subsequent patch.

This should preserve the old gtt init behavior which upon writing these
patches seems incorrect. The next patch will fix these things.

The one exception is VLV which doesn't have the preserved flush control
write behavior. Since we want to do that for all GEN6+ stuff, we'll
handle that in a later patch. Mainstream VLV support doesn't actually
exist yet anyway.

Communicating via the mailbox registers with the PCU can take quite
awhile.  And updating the ring frequency or enabling turbo is not
something that needs to happen synchronously, so take it out of our init
and resume paths to speed things up (~200ms on my T420).

Jesse Barnes 073f34d9d4 drm/i915: don't block resume on fb console resume v2
The console lock can be contended, so rather than prevent other drivers
after us from being held up, queue the console suspend into the global
work queue that can happen anytime.  I've measured this to take around
200ms on my T420.  Combined with the ring freq/turbo change, we should
save almost 1/2 a second on resume.

Daniel Vetter 47fab7370b drm/i915: add ->display.modeset_global_resources callback
After all relevant pipes are disabled and after we've updated all the
state with the staged state, but before we call the per-crtc
->mode_set functions there's a very natural point to set up any
shared/global resources like
- shared plls (obviously only the setup, the enabling needs to be
  separately handling with a separate refcount)
- global watermark state like the DSPARB on gmch platforms
- workaround bits that depend upon the exact global output
  configuration
- enabling the right set of refclocks
- enabling/disabling manual power wells.

Now for a lot of these things we can't move them into this function
yet, most often because we only compute the required information in
the per-crtc ->mode_set callback. Which is too late. But due to a
bunch of reasons (check-only atomic modeset, fastboot&hw state checks,
...) we need to separate the computation of that state from the actual
hw frobbery anyway. So we can move things into this new callback step-
by-step.

Others can't be moved here (or implemented at all) because our code
lacks the smarts to properly update them. E.g. the DSPARB can only be
updated when all pipes are disabled, so if we decide to change it's
value, we need to disable _all_ pipes. The infrastructure for that is
already in place (with the various pipe masks that driver the modeset
logic). But again we need to move a few things out of ->mode_set
first before we can even implement the correct decision making.

In any case, we need to start somewhere, so let's start with the
callback: Some small follow-up patches will make immediate good use of
it.

Paulo Zanoni a5c961d1f3 drm/i915: add TRANSCODER_EDP
Before Haswell we used to have the CPU pipes and the PCH transcoders.
We had the same amount of pipes and transcoders, and there was a 1:1
mapping between them. After Haswell what we used to call CPU pipe was
split into CPU pipe and CPU transcoder. So now we have 3 CPU pipes (A,
B and C), 4 CPU transcoders (A, B, C and EDP) and 1 PCH transcoder
(only used for VGA).

For all the outputs except for EDP we have an 1:1 mapping on the CPU
pipes and CPU transcoders, so if you're using CPU pipe A you have to
use CPU transcoder A. When have an eDP output you have to use
transcoder EDP and you can attach this CPU transcoder to any of the 3
CPU pipes. When using VGA you need to select a pair of matching CPU
pipes/transcoders (A/A, B/B, C/C) and you also need to enable/use the
PCH transcoder.

For now we're just creating the cpu_transcoder definitions and setting
cpu_transcoder to TRANSCODER_EDP on DDI eDP code, but none of the
registers was ported to use transcoder instead of pipe. The goal is to
keep the code backwards-compatible since on all cases except when
using eDP we must have pipe == cpu_transcoder.

V2: Comment the haswell_crtc_off chunk, suggested by Damien Lespiau
and Daniel Vetter.

We currently need the haswell_crtc_off chunk because TRANSCODER_EDP
can be used by any CRTC, so when you stop using it you have to stop
saying you're using it, otherwise you may have at some point 2 CRTCs
claiming they're using TRANSCODER_EDP (a disabled CRTC and an enabled
one), then the HW state readout code will get completely confused.

In other words:

Imagine the following case:
  xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --crtc 0
  xrandr --output eDP1 --off
  xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --crtc 2

After the last command you could get a "pipe A assertion failure
(expected off, current on)" because CRTC 0 still claims it's using
TRANSCODER_EDP, so the HW state readout function will read it
(through PIPECONF) and expect it to be off, when it's actually on
because it's being used by CRTC 2.

So when we make "intel_crtc->cpu_transcoder = intel_crtc->pipe" we
make sure we're pointing to our own original CRTC which is certainly
not used by any other CRTC.

Some BIOSes may forcibly suspend RC6 during their operation which
trigger a warning as we find the hardware in a perplexing state upon
first use. So far that appears to be the worst symptom as fortuituously
we use the same values as the BIOS for programming the FORCEWAKE register.

Rodrigo Vivi 0a3af26864 drm/i915: Insert i915_preliminary_hw_support variable.
On the worst scenario, users with new hardwares and old kernel from
enabling times can get black screens.  So, from now on, this
perliminary_hw_support module parameter shall be used by all upcoming
platforms that are still under enabling. The second option would be to
merge the pci ids after basic modeset works, but that makes testing
and development while bringing up hw a rather tedious afair.

Although it is uncomfortable for developers use this extra variable it
brings more stability for end users.

Ben Widawsky 42c0526c93 drm/i915: Extract PCU communication
There is a special mechanism for communicating with the PCU already
being used for the ring frequency stuff. As we'll be needing this for
other commands, extract it now to make future code less error prone and
the current code more reusable.

I'm not entirely sure if this code matches 1:1 with the previous code
behaviorally. Functionally however, it should be the same.

Chris Wilson 1cf8378906 drm/i915: fixup i915_gem_object_get_page inline helper
Note that just because we have n == MAX elements left, does not imply
that there are only MAX elements left in the scatterlist and so we may
not be on the last chain, and the nth element may in fact be a chain ptr.

This is exercised by the improved hangman tests and the gem_exec_big
test in i-g-t.

Chris Wilson acb868d3d7 drm/i915: Disallow preallocation of requests
The intention was to allow the caller to avoid a failure to queue a
request having already written commands to the ring. However, this is a
moot point as the i915_add_request() can fail for other reasons than a
mere allocation failure and those failure cases are more likely than

Paulo Zanoni 6441ab5f8f drm/i915: completely rewrite the Haswell PLL handling code
Problems with the previous code:
  - HDMI just uses WRPLL1 for everything, so dual head cases might not
    work sometimes.
  - At encoder->mode_set we just write the PLL register without doing
    any kind of check (e.g., check if the PLL is already being used).
  - There is no way to fail and return error codes at
    encoder->mode_set.
  - We write to PORT_CLK_SEL at mode_set and we never disable it.
  - Machines hang due to wrong clock enable/disable sequence.

So here we rewrite the code, making it a little more like the
pre-Haswell PLL mode set code:
  - Check PLL availability at ironlake_crtc_mode_set.
  - Try to use both WRPLLs.
  - Check if PLLs are used before actually trying to use them, and
    properly fail with error messages.
  - Enable/disable PORT_CLK_SEL at the right place.
  - Add some WARNs to check for bugs.

The next improvement will be to try to reuse PLLs if the timings
match, but this is content for another patch and it's already
documented with a TODO comment.

Chris Wilson cecc21fea9 drm/i915: Align the hangcheck wakeup to the nearest second
round_jiffies() aligns the wakeup time to the nearest second in order to
batch wakeups and reduce system load, which is useful for unimportant
coarse timers like our hangcheck.

v2: round_jiffies_relative() returns the relative jiffie value, whereas
we need the absolute value for the timer.

Chris Wilson 2f745ad3d3 drm/i915: Convert the dmabuf object to use the new i915_gem_object_ops
By providing a callback for when we need to bind the pages, and then
release them again later, we can shorten the amount of time we hold the
foreign pages mapped and pinned, and importantly the dmabuf objects then
behave as any other normal object with respect to the shrinker and
memory management.

Chris Wilson 9da3da660d drm/i915: Replace the array of pages with a scatterlist
Rather than have multiple data structures for describing our page layout
in conjunction with the array of pages, we can migrate all users over to
a scatterlist.

One major advantage, other than unifying the page tracking structures,
this offers is that we replace the vmalloc'ed array (which can be up to
a megabyte in size) with a chain of individual pages which helps reduce
memory pressure.

The disadvantage is that we then do not have a simple array to iterate,
or to access randomly. The common case for this is in the relocation
processing, which will typically fit within a single scatterlist page
and so be almost the same cost as the simple array. For iterating over
the array, the extra function call could be optimised away, but in
reality is an insignificant cost of either binding the pages, or
performing the pwrite/pread.

v2: Fix drm_clflush_sg() to not invoke wbinvd as well! And fix the
trivial compile error from rebasing.
