This patch allows PC8+ states on Haswell. These states can only be
reached when all the display outputs are disabled, and they allow some
more power savings.
The fact that the graphics device is allowing PC8+ doesn't mean that
the machine will actually enter PC8+: all the other devices also need
to allow PC8+.
For now this option is disabled by default. You need i915.allow_pc8=1
if you want it.
This patch adds a big comment inside i915_drv.h explaining how it
works and how it tracks things. Read it.

When building kernels for a preliminary hardware target, having to add a
kernel command-line option can prove inconvenient. Add a Kconfig option
that changes the default of this option to 1.

The new arch_phys_wc_add/del functions do the right thing both with
and without MTRR support in the kernel. So we can drop these
additional checks.
David Herrmann suggest to also kill the DRIVER_USE_MTRR flag since
it's now unused, which spurred me to do a bit a better audit of the
affected drivers. David helped a lot in that. Quoting our mail

Cool, thanks a lot for stitching together the list of drivers to look
at. So for real KMS drivers it's the drives responsibility to add an
mtrr if it needs one. nouvea, radeon, mgag200, i915 and vmwgfx do that
already. Somehow the savage driver also ends up doing that, I have no
idea why.
Note that gma500 as a pure KMS driver doesn't need MTRR setup since
the platforms that it supports all support PAT. So no MTRRs needed to
get wc iomappings.
The mtrr support in the drm core is all for legacy mappings of garts,
framebuffers and registers. All legacy drivers set the USE_MTRR flag,
so we're good there.
All in all I think we can really just ditch this

So I've stumbled over drm_fasync and wondered what it does. Digging
that up is quite a story.
First I've had to read up on what this does and ended up being rather
bewildered why peopled loved signals so much back in the days that
they've created SIGIO just for that ...
Then I wondered how this ever works, and what that strange "No-op."
comment right above it should mean. After all calling the core fasync
helper is pretty obviously not a noop. After reading through the
kernels FASYNC implementation I've noticed that signals are only sent
out to the processes attached with FASYNC by calling kill_fasync.
No merged drm driver has ever done that.
After more digging I've found out that the only driver that ever used
this is the so called GAMMA driver. I've frankly never heard of such a
gpu brand ever before. Now FASYNC seems to not have been the only bad
thing with that driver, since Dave Airlie removed it from the drm
driver with prejudice:

Drop GAMMA DRM from a great height ...
Long story short, the drm fasync support seems to be doing absolutely
nothing. And the only user of it was never merged into the upstream
kernel. And we don't need any fops->fasync callback since the fcntl
implementation in the kernel already implements the noop case
correctly.
So stop this particular cargo-cult and rip it all out.
v2: Kill drm_fasync assignments in rcar (newly added) and imx drivers
(somehow I've missed that one in staging). Also drop the reference in
the drm DocBook. ARM compile-fail reported by Rob Clark.

All the gem based kms drivers really want the same function to
destroy a dumb framebuffer backing storage object.
So give it to them and roll it out in all drivers.
This still leaves the option open for kms drivers which don't use GEM
for backing storage, but it does decently simplify matters for gem
drivers.

Currently, the register access code is split between i915_drv.c and
intel_pm.c. It only bares a superficial resemblance to the reset of the
powermanagement code, so move it all into its own file. This is to ease
further patches to enforce serialised register access.

the term used by the hardware design (and bspec) for all functions

unintentionally also changed the init sequence ordering between
gt_init and gt_reset - we need to reset BIOS damage like leftover
forcewake references before we run our own code. Otherwise we can get
nasty dmesg noise like
[drm:__gen6_gt_force_wake_mt_get] *ERROR* Timed out waiting for forcewake old ack to clear.
again. Since _reset suggests that we first need to have stuff
initialized (which isn't the case here) call it sanitze instead.
While at it also block out the rps disable introduced by the above
commit on ilk: We don't have any knowledge of ilk rps being broken in
similar ways. And the disable functions uses the default hw state
which is only read out when we're enabling rps. So essentially we've
been writing random grabage into that register.

In theory, the different register blocks were meant to be only ever
touched when holding either the struct_mutex, mode_config.lock or even a
specific localised lock. This does not seem to be the case, and the
hardware reacts extremely badly if we attempt to concurrently access two
registers within the same cacheline.
The HSD suggests that we only need to do this workaround for display
range registers. However, upon review we need to serialize the multiple
stages in our register write functions - if only for preemption
protection.
Irrespective of the hardware requirements, the current io functions are
a little too loose with respect to the combination of pre- and
post-condition testing that we do in conjunction with the actual io. As
a result, we may be pre-empted and generate both false-postive and
false-negative errors.
Note well that this is a "90%" solution, there remains a few direct
users of ioread/iowrite which will be fixed up in the next few patches.
Since they are more invasive and that this simple change will prevent
almost all lockups on Haswell, we kept this patch simple to facilitate
backporting to stable.

prefault is stll enabled by default which prevent most of pwrite/pread/reloc

In kernel modeset driver mode we're in full control of the chip,
always. So there's no need at all to set mm.suspended in
i915_gem_idle. Hence move that out into the leavevt ioctl. Since
i915_gem_idle doesn't suspend gem any more we can also drop the
re-enabling for KMS in the thaw function.
Also clean up the handling of mm.suspend at driver load by coalescing
all the assignments.
Stumbled over while reading through our resume code for unrelated
reasons.
v2: Shovel mm.suspended into the (newly created) ums dungeon as
suggested by Chris Wilson. The plan is that once we've completely
stopped relying on the register save/restore code we could shovel even
that in there.
v3: Improve the locking for the entervt/leavevt ioctls a bit by moving
the dev->struct_mutex locking outside of i915_gem_idle. Also don't
clear dev_priv->ums.mm_suspended for the kms case, we allocate it with

Originally I've thought that this fixes up the reset issues on my
gm45, but that was just a red herring due to b0rked testing.
Still I much prefer writing the right values (all other fields are
reserved) instead of potentially dragging gunk around. Hence also
clear the register to 0 after a reset.
Note that Cspec is a bit confused and doesn't explicitly say that all
the other bits in this register are "reserved, mbz" like usually.
Instead they're marked as "r/o, default value = 0" which semantically
amounts to the same thing.
v2: Stop claiming this fixes anything and return 0 if successful
instead of stack garbage.
v3: Pimp the commit message to explain exactly why I think the docs
allow us to ditch the rmw cycle, spurred by a discussion with Chris.

In some virtualized environments (e.g. XEN), there is irrelevant ISA bridge in
the system. To work reliably, we should scan trhough all the ISA bridge
devices and check for the first match, instead of only checking the first one.

For fastboot we need some support to read out the sharing state of
plls, at least for platforms where they can be shared (or freely
assigned at least). Now for ivb we already have pretty extensive
infrastructure for tracking pch plls, and it took us an aweful lot of
tries to get that remotely right. Note that hsw could also share plls,
but even now they're already freely assignable. So we need this on
more than just ivb.
So on top of the usual fastboot fun pll sharing seems to be an
additional step up in fragility. Hence a common infrastructure for all
shared/freely assignable display plls seems to be in order.
The plan is to have a bit of dpll hw state readout code, which can be
used individually, but also to fill in the pipe config. The hw state
cross check code will then use that information to make sure that
after every modeset every pipe still is connected to a pll which still
has the correct configuration - a lot of the pch pll sharing bugs
where due to incorrect sharing.
We start this endeavour with a simple s/pch_pll/shared_dpll/ rename
job.

IPS is still enabled by default. Feature requested by the power
management team.
This should also help testing the feature on some early pre-production
hardware where there were relationship problems between IPS and PSR.

It appears that a beneficial side-effect of Mika's more accurate hangman
work is to speed up hang detection and execution. This exposes a bug in
the reset code that then treats repeated simulated hangs as an
indication that the machine is wedged. Jiggle the code around so that we
only do the simulation processing from the hangcheck and avoid confusing
it with a real hang.

This patch introduce Frame Buffer Compression (FBC) support for IVB,
without enabling it by default.
It adds a new function gen7_enable_fbc to avoid getting
ironlake_enable_fbc messed with many IS_IVYBRIDGE checks.

Since we've already set up a nice vtable to abstract other PPGTT

We're still not 100% ready to disable the power well, so don't disable
it for now. When we disable it we break the audio driver (because some
of the audio registers are on the power well) and machines with eDP on
port D (because it doesn't use TRANSCODER_EDP).
Also, instead of just reverting the code, add a Kernel option to let
us disable it if we want. This will allow us to keep developing and
testing the feature while it's not enabled.

We need it to restore the ilk rc6 context, since the gpu wait no
requires interrupts. But in general having interrupts around should
help in code sanity, since more and more stuff is interrupt driven.

We plan to treat GEN7_ERR_INT as an interrupt, so use this register
for the checks inside I915_WRITE. This way we can have the best of
both worlds: the error message with a register address and the
V2: Split in 2 patches: one for the macro, one for changing the

i915 driver needs to do modeset when
1. system resumes from sleep
2. lid is opened
In PM_SUSPEND_MEM state, all the GPEs are cleared when system resumes,
thus it is the i915_resume code does the modeset rather than intel_lid_notify().
But in PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state, this will be broken because
system is still responsive to the lid events.
1. When we close the lid in Freeze state, intel_lid_notify() sets modeset_on_lid.
2. When we reopen the lid, intel_lid_notify() will do a modeset,
before the system is resumed.

MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN: do modeset on next lid open event
MODESET_DONE: modeset already done
MODESET_SUSPENDED: suspended, only do modeset when system is resumed
In this way,
1. when lid is closed, MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN is set so that
we'll do modeset on next lid open event.
2. when lid is opened, MODESET_DONE is set
so that duplicate lid open events will be ignored.
3. when system suspends, MODESET_SUSPENDED is set.
In this case, we will not do modeset on any lid events.
Plus, locking mechanism is also introduced to avoid racing.

For GMCH platforms we set up the hpd irq registers in the irq
postinstall hook. But since we only enable the irq sources we actually
need in PORT_HOTPLUG_EN/STATUS, taking dev_priv->hotplug_supported_mask
into account, no hpd interrupt sources is enabled since

drm/i915: reorder setup sequence to have irqs for output setup
Wrongly set-up interrupts also lead to broken hw-based load-detection
on at least GM45, resulting in ghost VGA/TV-out outputs.
To fix this, delay the hotplug register setup until after all outputs
are set up, by moving it into a new dev_priv->display.hpd_irq_callback.
We might also move the PCH_SPLIT platforms to such a setup eventually.
Another funny part is that we need to delay the fbdev initial config
probing until after the hpd regs are setup, for otherwise it'll detect
ghost outputs. But we can only enable the hpd interrupt handling
itself (and the output polling) _after_ that initial scan, due to
massive locking brain-damage in the fbdev setup code. Add a big
comment to explain this cute little dragon lair.
v2: Encapsulate all the fbdev handling by wrapping the move call into
intel_fbdev_initial_config in intel_fb.c. Requested by Chris Wilson.

We need this code to init the PCH SSC refclk and the FDI registers.
The BIOS does this too and that's why VGA worked before this patch,
until you tried to suspend the machine...
This patch implements the "Sequence to enable CLKOUT_DP for FDI usage
and configure PCH FDI/IO" from our documentation.

There seem to be indeed some awkwards machines around, mostly those
without OpRegion support, where the firmware changes the display hw
state behind our backs when closing the lid.
This force-restore logic has been originally introduced in

We don't check if the "unclaimed register" bit is set before we call
writel, so if it was already set before, we might print a misleading
message about "unclaimed write" on the wrong register.
This patch makes us check the unclaimed bit before the writel, so we
can print a new "Unknown unclaimed register before writing to %x"
message.

The BIOS shouldn't be touching this memory across suspend/resume, so

Communicating via the mailbox registers with the PCU can take quite
awhile. And updating the ring frequency or enabling turbo is not
something that needs to happen synchronously, so take it out of our init
and resume paths to speed things up (~200ms on my T420).

The console lock can be contended, so rather than prevent other drivers
after us from being held up, queue the console suspend into the global
work queue that can happen anytime. I've measured this to take around
200ms on my T420. Combined with the ring freq/turbo change, we should
save almost 1/2 a second on resume.

We don't really support fancy north display/pch combinations, so
put a big yelling WARN_ON in there. It /should/ be impossible, but
alas, the rumours don't stop (mostly due to really early silicon
sometimes using older PCHs).

The big thing is the disabling of the hsw support by default, cc: stable.
We've aimed for basic hsw support in 3.6, but due to a few bad
happenstances we've screwed up and only 3.8 will have better modeset
support than vesa. To avoid yet another round of fallout from such a

Some BIOSes may forcibly suspend RC6 during their operation which
trigger a warning as we find the hardware in a perplexing state upon
first use. So far that appears to be the worst symptom as fortuituously
we use the same values as the BIOS for programming the FORCEWAKE register.

To extract a bit of code call drm_mode_config_reset both on resume
and boot-up and move the hw state frobbing from the crt_init to the
->reset callback. The crt connector is the only one with a ->reset
callback, hence we can easily do this.

On the worst scenario, users with new hardwares and old kernel from
enabling times can get black screens. So, from now on, this
perliminary_hw_support module parameter shall be used by all upcoming
platforms that are still under enabling. The second option would be to
merge the pci ids after basic modeset works, but that makes testing
and development while bringing up hw a rather tedious afair.
Although it is uncomfortable for developers use this extra variable it
brings more stability for end users.

Remove redundant DRM UAPI header #inclusions from drivers/gpu/.
Remove redundant #inclusions of core DRM UAPI headers (drm.h, drm_mode.h and
drm_sarea.h). They are now #included via drmP.h and drm_crtc.h via a preceding
patch.
Without this patch and the patch to make include the UAPI headers from the core
headers, after the UAPI split, the DRM C sources cannot find these UAPI headers
because the DRM code relies on specific -I flags to make #include "..." work
on headers in include/drm/ - but that does not work after the UAPI split without
adding more -I flags.

As a quick reference I'll detail the motivation and design of the new code a
bit here (mostly stitched together from patchbomb announcements and commits
introducing the new concepts).
The crtc helper code has the fundamental assumption that encoders and crtcs can
be enabled/disabled in any order, as long as we take care of depencies (which
means that enabled encoders need an enabled crtc to feed them data,
essentially).
Our hw works differently. We already have tons of ugly cases where crtc code
enables encoder hw (or encoder->mode_set enables stuff that should only be
enabled in enocder->commit) to work around these issues. But on the disable
side we can't pull off similar tricks - there we actually need to rework the
modeset sequence that controls all this. And this is also the real motivation
why I've finally undertaken this rewrite: eDP on my shiny new Ivybridge
Ultrabook is broken, and it's broken due to the wrong disable sequence ...
The new code introduces a few interfaces and concepts:
- Add new encoder->enable/disable functions which are directly called from the
crtc->enable/disable function. This ensures that the encoder's can be
enabled/disabled at a very specific in the modeset sequence, controlled by our
platform specific code (instead of the crtc helper code calling them at a time
it deems convenient).
- Rework the dpms code - our code has mostly 1:1 connector:encoder mappings and
does support cloning on only a few encoders, so we can simplify things quite a
bit.
- Also only ever disable/enable the entire output pipeline. This ensures that
we obey the right sequence of enabling/disabling things, trying to be clever
here mostly just complicates the code and results in bugs. For cloneable
encoders this requires a bit of special handling to ensure that outputs can
still be disabled individually, but it simplifies the common case.
- Add infrastructure to read out the current hw state. No amount of careful
ordering will help us if we brick the hw on the initial modeset setup. Which
could happen if we just randomly disable things, oblivious to the state set up
by the bios. Hence we need to be able to read that out. As a benefit, we grow a
few generic functions useful to cross-check our modeset code with actual hw
state.
With all this in place, we can copy&paste the crtc helper code into the
drm/i915 driver and start to rework it:
- As detailed above, the new code only disables/enables an entire output pipe.
As a preparation for global mode-changes (e.g. reassigning shared resources) it
keeps track of which pipes need to be touched by a set of bitmasks.
- To ensure that we correctly disable the current display pipes, we need to
know the currently active connector/encoder/crtc linking. The old crtc helper
simply overwrote these links with the new setup, the new code stages the new
links in ->new_* pointers. Those get commited to the real linking pointers once
the old output configuration has been torn down, before the ->mode_set
callbacks are called.
- Finally the code adds tons of self-consistency checks by employing the new hw
state readout functions to cross-check the actual hw state with what the
datastructure think it should be. These checks are done both after every
modeset and after the hw state has been read out and sanitized at boot/resume
time. All these checks greatly helped in tracking down regressions and bugs in
the new code.
With this new basis, a lot of cleanups and improvements to the code are now
possible (besides the DP fixes that ultimately made me write this), but not yet
done:
- I think we should create struct intel_mode and use it as the adjusted mode
everywhere to store little pieces like needs_tvclock, pipe dithering values or
dp link parameters. That would still be a layering violation, but at least we
wouldn't need to recompute these kinds of things in intel_display.c. Especially
the port bpc computation needed for selecting the pipe bpc and dithering
settings in intel_display.c is rather gross.
- In a related rework we could implement ->mode_valid in terms of ->mode_fixup
in a generic way - I've hunted down too many bugs where ->mode_valid did the
right thing, but ->mode_fixup didn't. Or vice versa, resulting in funny bugs
for user-supplied modes.
- Ditch the idea to rework the hdp handling in the common crtc helper code and
just move things to i915.ko. Which would rid us of the ->detect crtc helper
dependencies.
- LVDS wire pair and pll enabling is all done in the crtc->mode_set function
currently. We should be able to move this to the crtc_enable callbacks (or in
the case of the LVDS wire pair enabling, into some encoder callback).
Last, but not least, this new code should also help in enabling a few neat
features: The hw state readout code prepares (but there are still big pieces
missing) for fastboot, i.e. avoiding the inital modeset at boot-up and just
taking over the configuration left behind by the bios. We also should be able
to extend the configuration checks in the beginning of the modeset sequence and
make better decisions about shared resources (which is the entire point behind
the atomic/global modeset ioctl).

Since this only calls crtc helper functions, of which a shocking
amount are NULL.
Now the curious thing is how the new modeset code worked with this
function call still present:
Thanks to the hw state readout and the suspend fixes to properly
quiescent the register state, nothing is actually enabled at resume
(if the bios doesn't set up anything). Which means resume_force_mode
doesn't actually do anything and hence nothing blows up at resume
time.
The other reason things do work is that the fbcon layer has it's own
resume notifier callback, which restores the mode. And thanks to the
force vt switch at suspend/resume, that then forces X to restore it's
own mode.
Hence everything still worked (as long as the bios doesn't enable
anything). And we can just kill the call to resume_force_mode.
The upside of both this patch and the preceeding patch to quiescent
the modeset state is that our resume path is much simpler:
- We now longer restore bogus register values (which most often would
enable the backlight a bit and a few ports), causing flickering.
- We now longer call resume_force_mode to restore a mode that the
fbcon layer would overwrite right away anyway.

We need this to avoid confusing the hw state readout code with the cpt
pch plls at resume time: We'd read the new pipe state (which is
disabled), but still believe that we have a life pll connected to that
pipe (from before the suspend). Hence properly disable pipes to clear
out all the residual state.
This has the neat side-effect that we don't enable ports prematurely
by restoring bogus state from the saved register values.

out.
To properly disable the output pipelines at the initial modeset after
resume or boot up we need to have an accurate picture of which outputs
are enabled and connected to which crtcs. Otherwise we risk disabling
things at the wrong time, which can lead to hangs (or at least royally
confused panels), both requiring a walk to the reset button to fix.
Hence read out the hw state with the freshly introduce get_hw_state
functions and then sanitize it afterwards.
For a full modeset readout (which would allow us to avoid the initial
modeset at boot up) a few things are still missing:
- Reading out the mode from the pipe, especially the dotclock
computation is quite some fun.
- Reading out the parameters for the stolen memory framebuffer and
wrapping it up.
- Reading out the pch pll connections - luckily the disable code
simply bails out if the crtc doesn't have a pch pll attached (even
for configurations that would need one).
This patch here turned up tons of smelly stuff around resume: We
restore tons of register in seemingly random way (well, not quite, but
we're not too careful either), which leaves the hw in a rather
ill-defined state: E.g. the port registers are sometimes
unconditionally restore (lvds, crt), leaving us with an active
encoder/connector but no active pipe connected to it. Luckily the hw
state sanitizer detects this madness and fixes things up a bit.

The interface's immediate purpose is to do synchronous timestamp queries
as required by GL_TIMESTAMP. The GPU has a register for reading the
timestamp but because that would normally require root access through
libpciaccess, the IOCTL can provide this service instead.
Currently the implementation whitelists only the render ring timestamp
register, because that is the only thing we need to expose at this time.

Simply failing to reset the gpu because someone else might still hold
the mutex isn't a great idea - I see reliable silent reset failures.
And gpu reset simply needs to be reliable and Just Work.
"But ... the deadlocks!"
We already kick all processes waiting for the gpu before launching the
reset work item. New waiters need to check the wedging state anyway
and then bail out. If we have places that can deadlock, we simply need
to fix them.
"But ... testing!"
We have the gpu hangman, and if the current gpu load gem_exec_nop
isn't good enough to hit a specific case, we can add a new one.
"But ... don't we return -EAGAIN for non-interruptible calls to
wait_seqno now?"
Yep, but this problem already exists in the current code. A follow up
patch will remedy this by returning -EIO for non-interruptible sleeps
if the gpu died and the low-level wait bails out with -EAGAIN.

Previously we had has_pch_split to tell us whether we had a PCH or not
and we also had dev_priv->pch_type to tell us which kind of PCH it
was, but it could only be used if we were 100% sure we did have a PCH.
Now that PCH_NONE was added to dev_priv->pch_type we don't need
has_pch_split anymore: we can just check for pch_type != PCH_NONE.
The HAS_PCH_{IBX,CPT,LPT} macros use dev_priv->pch_type, so they can
only be called after intel_detect_pch. The HAS_PCH_SPLIT macro looks
at dev_priv->info->has_pch_split, which is available earlier.
Since the goal is to implement HAS_PCH_SPLIT using dev_priv->pch_type
instead of dev_priv->info->has_pch_split, we need to make sure that
intel_detect_pch is called before any calls to HAS_PCH_SPLIT are made.
So we moved the intel_detect_pch call to an earlier stage.

This is the quick&dirty way Dave Airlie suggested to workaround the
midlayer drm agp brain-damange. Note that i915_probe is only called
when the driver has ksm enabled, so no need to check for that.
We also need to move the intel_agp_enabled check at the right place.
Note that the only thing this does is enforce the correct module load
order (by using a symbol from intel-agp.ko) to ensure that the fake
agp driver is ready before the drm core tries to set up the agp stuff.

I want to merge the "no more fake agp on gen6+" patches into
drm-intel-next (well, the last pieces). But a patch in 3.5-rc4 also
adds a new use of dev->agp. Hence the backmarge to sort this out, for
otherwise drm-intel-next merged into Linus' tree would conflict in the
relevant code, things would compile but nicely OOPS at driver load :(
Conflicts in this merge are just simple cases of "both branches
changed/added lines at the same place". The only tricky part is to
keep the order correct wrt the unwind code in case of errors in

I've added a bit of logic such that running the hangman test on chips
without any hw reset support at all doesn't wedge the gpu because the
reset failed. This relied on checking for non-null stop_rings.
Unfortunately I've botched a rebase somewhere and stop_rings is still
cleared at the old place before the reset code.
Fix this up so that running the i-g-t tests on gen2/3 doesn't result
in a wedged gpu.

Very basic code for context setup/destruction in the driver.
Adds the file i915_gem_context.c This file implements HW context
support. On gen5+ a HW context consists of an opaque GPU object which is
referenced at times of context saves and restores. With RC6 enabled,
the context is also referenced as the GPU enters and exists from RC6
(GPU has it's own internal power context, except on gen5). Though
something like a context does exist for the media ring, the code only
supports contexts for the render ring.
In software, there is a distinction between contexts created by the
user, and the default HW context. The default HW context is used by GPU
clients that do not request setup of their own hardware context. The
default context's state is never restored to help prevent programming
errors. This would happen if a client ran and piggy-backed off another
clients GPU state. The default context only exists to give the GPU some
offset to load as the current to invoke a save of the context we
actually care about. In fact, the code could likely be constructed,
albeit in a more complicated fashion, to never use the default context,
though that limits the driver's ability to swap out, and/or destroy
other contexts.
All other contexts are created as a request by the GPU client. These
contexts store GPU state, and thus allow GPU clients to not re-emit
state (and potentially query certain state) at any time. The kernel
driver makes certain that the appropriate commands are inserted.
There are 4 entry points into the contexts, init, fini, open, close.
The names are self-explanatory except that init can be called during
reset, and also during pm thaw/resume. As we expect our context to be
preserved across these events, we do not reinitialize in this case.
As Adam Jackson pointed out, The cutoff of 1MB where a HW context is
considered too big is arbitrary. The reason for this is even though
context sizes are increasing with every generation, they have yet to
eclipse even 32k. If we somehow read back way more than that, it
probably means BIOS has done something strange, or we're running on a
platform that wasn't designed for this.

Empirical evidence suggests that we need to: On at least one ivb
machine when running the hangman i-g-t test, the rings don't properly
initialize properly - the RING_START registers seems to be stuck at
all zeros.
Holding forcewake around this register init sequences makes chip reset
reliable again. Note that this is not the first such issue:

reliable on the blt ring at boot-up. So I guess it won't hurt if we do
this unconditionally for all force_wake needing gpus.

This adds handle->fd and fd->handle support to i915, this is to allow
for offloading of rendering in one direction and outputs in the other.

Note that we have squat i-g-t testcoverage for any of the lifetime and
access rules dma_buf/prime support brings along. And there are quite a
few intricate situations here.
Also note that the integration with the existing code is a bit
hackish, especially around get_gtt_pages and put_gtt_pages. It imo
would be easier with the prep code from Chris Wilson's unbound series,
but that is for 3.6.
Also note that I didn't bother to put the new prepare/finish gtt hooks
to good use by moving the dma_buf_map/unmap_attachment calls in there
(like we've originally planned for).
Last but not least this patch is only compile-tested, but I've changed
very little compared to Dave Airlie's version. So there's a decent
chance v2 on drm-next works as well as v1 on 3.4-rc.
v3: Right when I've hit sent I've noticed that I've screwed up one
obj->sg_list (for dmar support) and obj->sg_table (for prime support)
disdinction. We should be able to merge these 2 paths, but that's
material for another patch.

In many places we wish to iterate over the rings associated with the
GPU, so refactor them to use a common macro.
Along the way, there are a few code removals that should be side-effect
free and some rearrangement which should only have a cosmetic impact,
such as error-state.
Note that this slightly changes the semantics in the hangcheck code:
We now always cycle through all enabled rings instead of
short-circuiting the logic.

intel_ring_initialized() and not removing the warning (just moving them
to a new home, closer to the error).

Currently we call gen6_enable_rps() (which writes into the per-ring
register mmio space) from intel_modeset_init_hw() which is called before
we initialise the rings. If we defer intel_modeset_init_hw() until
afterwards (in the intel_modeset_gem_init() phase) all is well.

Inspired by the recent ppgtt regression report, where switching of
dmar only for the gpu seems to fix things completely, I've looked
again at the semaphores+vt-d situation.
Contrary to my earlier testing a few months back my system is now
stable with dmar disabled for the igd, and not only when disabling
dmar completely.
So I'm rather hopeful that all our recent fixes for snb have changed
things for code and it's time to try enabling semaphores again. We've
also had issues with enabling semaphores which are not vt-d related,
but I guess these are all fixed by the autoreport-disabling and lazy
request fix. And there's only one way to find out whether there are
still other issues ...
When I've tried to apply this patch I've noticed that semaphores on
gen6 have already silently been enabled in

On gen4+ we don't reset the display unit, so resetting the complete
modeset state should not be necessary.
We can't do reset on gen3 anyway, which leaves us with gen2 reset:
According to Chris Wilson, that doesn't work so great, so he suggested
we just ignore that. If the need ever arrises, we can re-add it later
on.

avoid angering the hangcheck right away (and potentially declaring
the gpu permanently wedged).
- ignore reset failures when hanging due to the hangman - we don't
have reset code for all generations.

gpu reset is a very important piece of our infrastructure.
Unfortunately we only really it test by actually hanging the gpu,
which often has bad side-effects for the entire system. And the gpu
hang handling code is one of the rather complicated pieces of code we
have, consisting of
- hang detection
- error capture
- actual gpu reset
- reset of all the gem bookkeeping
- reinitialition of the entire gpu
This patch adds a debugfs to selectively stopping rings by ceasing to
update the hw tail pointer, which will result in the gpu no longer
updating it's head pointer and eventually to the hangcheck firing.
This way we can exercise the gpu hang code under controlled conditions
without a dying gpu taking down the entire systems.
Patch motivated by me forgetting to properly reinitialize ppgtt after
a gpu reset.
Usage:
echo $((1 << $ringnum)) > i915_ring_stop # stops one ring
echo 0xffffffff > i915_ring_stop # stops all, future-proof version
then run whatever testload is desired. i915_ring_stop automatically
resets after a gpu hang is detected to avoid hanging the gpu to fast
and declaring it wedged.

PCH PLLs aren't required for outputs on the CPU, so we shouldn't just
treat them as part of the pipe.
So split the code out and manage PCH PLLs separately, allocating them
when needed or trying to re-use existing PCH PLL setups when the timings
match.

After a gpu reset we need to re-init some of the hw state we only
initialize when modeset is enabled, like rc6, hw contexts or render/GT
core clock gating and workaround register settings.
Note that this patch has a small change in the resume code:
- rc6 on gen6+ is only restored for the modeset case (for more
consistency with other callsites). This is no problem because recent
kernels refuse to load drm/i915 without kms on gen6+
- rc6/emon on ilk is only restored for the modeset case. This is no
problem because rc6 is disabled by default on ilk, and ums on ilk
has never really been a supported option outside of horrible rhel
backports.

In theory this will have performance and power improvements. Performance
because we don't need to stall when the scanout BO is busy, and power
because we don't have to stall when the BO is busy (and the ring can
even go to sleep if the HW supports it).

- mmap offset exhaustion mitigation by Chris Wilson.
- a start at figuring out which codepaths in our messy dri1/ums+gem/kms
driver we actually need to support by bailing out of unsupported case.
The driver now refuses to load without kms on gen6+ and disallows a few
ioctls that userspace never used in certain cases. More of this will
definitely come.
- More decoupling of global gtt and ppgtt.
- Improved dual-link lvds detection by Takashi Iwai.
- Shut up the compiler + plus fix the fallout (Ben)
- Inverted panel brightness handling (mostly Acer manages to break things
in this way).
- Small fixlets and adjustements and some minor things to help debugging.
Regression-wise QA reported quite a few issues on ivb, but all of them
turned out to be hw stability issues which are already fixed in
drm-intel-fixes (QA runs the nightly regression tests on -next alone,
without -fixes automatically merged in). There's still one issue open on
snb, it looks like occlusion query writes are not quite as cache coherent
as we've expected. With some of the pwrite adjustements we can now
reliably hit this. Kernel workaround for it is in the works."

i915_drm_thaw was not locking the mode_config lock when calling
drm_helper_resume_force_mode. When there were multiple wake sources,
this caused FDI training failure on SNB which in turn corrupted the
display.

This allows to select which rc6 modes are to be used via kernel parameter,
via a bitmask parameter. E.g.:
- to enable rc6, i915_enable_rc6=1
- to enable rc6 and deep rc6, i915_enable_rc6=3
- to enable rc6 and deepest rc6, use i915_enable_rc6=5
- to enable rc6, deep and deepest rc6, use i915_enable_rc6=7
Please keep in mind that the deepest RC6 state really should NOT be used
by default, as it could potentially worsen the issues with deep RC6. So do
enable it only when you know what you are doing. However, having it around
could help solving possible future rc6-related issues and their debugging
on user machines.
Note that this changes behavior - previously, value of 1 would enable both
RC6 and deep RC6. Now it should only enable RC6 and deep/deepest RC6
stages must be enabled manually.

Looking at hibernate overwriting I though it looked like a cursor,
so I tracked down this missing piece to stop the cursor blink
timer. I've no idea if this is sufficient to fix the hibernate
problems people are seeing, but please test it.
Both radeon and nouveau have done this for a long time.
I've run this personally all night hib/resume cycles with no fails.

Add a new module optoin lvds_channel to specify the LVDS channel mode
explicitly instead of probing the LVDS register value set by BIOS.
This will be helpful when VBT is broken or incompatible with the
current code.

This change enables the use of displays where the vbt table just
contains inappropriate values, but either the vesa defaults or
the video=... modes do something sensible with the attached display.
The problem happens with an embedded board that contains vbt bios
tables that do not match the attached display. Using this change and
the appropriate kernel boot command line they are able to use an
otherwise completely unusable secondary display on that embedded
board.

If we don't have a sufficient number of free entries in the FIFO, we
proceed to do a write anyway. With this check we should have a clue if
that write actually failed or not.
After some discussion with Daniel Vetter regarding his original
complaint, we agreed upon this.

This is similar to a patch I wrote several months ago. It's been updated
for the new FORCEWAKE_MT. As recommended by Chris Wilson, use WARN()
instead of DRM_ERROR, so we can get a backtrace.
This shouldn't impact performance too much as the extra register read
can replace the POSTING_READ we had previously.

Back-merge from drm-fixes into drm-intel-next to sort out two things:
- interlaced support: -fixes contains a bugfix to correctly clear
interlaced configuration bits in case the bios sets up an interlaced
mode and we want to set up the progressive mode (current kernels
don't support interlaced). The actual feature work to support
interlaced depends upon (and conflicts with) this bugfix.
- forcewake voodoo to workaround missed IRQ issues: -fixes only enabled
this for ivybridge, but some recent bug reports indicate that we
need this on Sandybridge, too. But in a slightly different flavour
and with other fixes and reworks on top. Additionally there are some
forcewake cleanup patches heading to -next that would conflict with
currrent -fixes.

We want to unconditionally enable ppgtt for two reasons:
- Windows uses this on snb and later.
- We need the basic hw support to work before we can think about real
per-process address spaces and other cool features we want.
But Chris Wilson was complaining all over irc and intel-gfx that this
will blow up if we don't have a module option to disable it. Hence add
one, to prevent this.
ppgtt support seems to slightly change the timings and make crashy
things slightly more or less crashy. Now in my testing and the testing
this got on troublesome snb machines, it seems to have improved things
only. But on ivb it makes quite a few crashes happen much more often,

Luckily Eugeni Dodonov seems to have a set of workarounds that fix
this issue.

We have to do this manually. Somebody had a Great Idea.
I've measured speed-ups just a few percent above the noise level
(below 5% for the best case), but no slowdows. Chris Wilson measured
quite a bit more (10-20% above the usual snb variance) on a more
recent and better tuned version of sna, but also recorded a few
slow-downs on benchmarks know for uglier amounts of snb-induced
variance.

Along with the previous patch to make the reset operation protected by
the gt_lock as well, this ensures that all register read operations
will occur with the forcewake hardware enabled. As an added bonus,
this makes read operations more efficient by taking the spinlock only
once per read instead of twice.

The problem this patch solves is that the forcewake accounting
necessary for register reads is protected by dev->struct_mutex. But the
hangcheck and error_capture code need to access registers without
grabbing this mutex because we hold it while waiting for the gpu.
So a new lock is required. Because currently the error_state capture
is called from the error irq handler and the hangcheck code runs from
a timer, it needs to be an irqsafe spinlock (note that the registers
used by the irq handler (neglecting the error handling part) only uses
registers that don't need the forcewake dance).
We could tune this down to a normal spinlock when we rework the
error_state capture and hangcheck code to run from a workqueue. But
we don't have any read in a fastpath that needs forcewake, so I've
decided to not care much about overhead.
This prevents tests/gem_hangcheck_forcewake from i-g-t from killing my
snb on recent kernels - something must have slightly changed the
timings. On previous kernels it only trigger a WARN about the broken
locking.

We learned that the ECOBUS register was inside the GT power well, and
so *did* need force wake to be read, so it gets removed from the list
of 'doesn't need force wake' registers.
That means the code reading ECOBUS after forcing the mt_force_wake
function to be called needs to use I915_READ_NOTRACE; it doesn't need
to do more force wake fun as it's already done it manually.
This also adds a comment explaining why the MT forcewake testing code
only needs to call mt_forcewake_get/put and not disable RC6 manually
-- the ECOBUS read will return 0 if the device is in RC6 and isn't
using MT forcewake, causing the test to work correctly.

This adds a default setting for semaphores parameter, and enables
semaphores by default on IVB.
For now, as semaphores interaction with VTd causes random issues on
SNB, we do not enable them by default. But they can still be enabled
via the semaphores=1 kernel parameter.

RC6 should always work on IVB, and should work on SNB whenever IO
remapping is disabled. RC6 never works on Ironlake. Make the default
value for the parameter follow these guidelines. Setting the value
to either 0 or 1 will force the specified behavior.

On IVB C0+ with newer BIOSes, the forcewake handshake has changed. There's
now a bitfield for different driver components to keep the GT powered
on. On Linux, we centralize forcewake handling in one place, so we
still just need a single bit, but we need to use the new registers if MT
forcewake is enabled.
This needs testing on affected machines. Please reply with your
tested-by if you had problems after a BIOS upgrade and this patch fixes
them.

Subject: [PATCH] drm: Make the per-driver file_operations struct const
The DRM layer keeps a copy of struct file_operations inside its
big driver struct... which prevents it from being consistent and static.
For consistency (and the general security objective of having such things
static), it's desirable to get this fixed.
This patch splits out the file_operations field to its own struct,
which is then "static const", and just stick a pointer to this into
the driver struct, making it more consistent with how the rest of the
kernel does this.

The reference clock configuration must be done before any mode setting
can occur as all outputs must be disabled to change
anything. Initialize the clocks after turning everything off during
the initialization process.
Also, re-initialize the refclk at resume time.

The read back of the available FIFO entries is vital for system
stability, but extremely costly. However, we only need a guide so as to
avoid eating into the reserved entries and since we are the only
consumer we can cache the read of the count from the last write.

This lets us make the various IRQ functions static and helps avoid
problems like the one fixed in "drm/i915: Use chipset-specific irq
installers" where one of the exported functions was called rather than
the chipset specific version.
This also fixes a UMS-mode bug -- the correct irq functions for IRL
and later chips were only getting loaded in the KMS path.

The failure is as follows:
1. Userspace gets forcewake lock, lock count >=1
2. GPU hang/reset occurs (forcewake bit is reset)
3. count is now incorrect
The failure can only occur when using the forcewake userspace lock.
This has the unfortunate consequence of messing up the driver as well as
userspace, unless userspace closes the debugfs file, the kernel will
never end up waking the GT since the refcount will be > 1.
The solution is to try to recover the correct forcewake state based on
the refcount. There is a period of time where userspace reads/writes may
occur after the reset, before the GT has been forcewaked. The interface
was never designed to be a perfect solution for userspace reads/writes,
and the kernel portion is fixed by this patch.

FBC has too many corner cases that we don't currently deal with, so
disable it by default so we can enable more important features like RC6,
which conflicts in some configurations.

My Q67 / i7-2600 box has rev09 Sandy Bridge graphics. It hangs
instantly when GNOME loads and it hangs so hard the reset button
doesn't work. Setting i915.semaphore=0 fixes it.
Semaphores were disabled in a1656b9090 ("drm/i915: Disable GPU
semaphores by default") in 2.6.38 but were then re-enabled (by mistake?)
by the merge 47ae63e0c2 ("Merge branch 'drm-intel-fixes' into
drm-intel-next").
(It's worth noting that the offending change is i915_drv.c, which was
not marked as a conflict - although a 'git show --cc' on the merge does
show that neither parent had it set to 1)

Provide a reference count to track the forcewake state of the GPU and
give a safe mechanism for userspace to wake the GT. This also potentially
saves a UC read if the GT is known to be awake already.
The reference count is atomic, but the register access and hardware wake
sequence is protected by struct_mutex.

Andi Kleen narrowed his GPU hangs on his Sugar Bay (SNB desktop) rev 09
down to the use of GPU semaphores, and we already know that they appear
broken up to Huron River (mobile) rev 08. (I'm optimistic that disabling
GPU semaphores is simply hiding another bug by the latency and
side-effects of the additional device interaction it introduces...)
However, use of semaphores is a massive performance improvement... Only
as long as the system remains stable. Enable at your peril.

Whilst the GT is powered down (rc6), writes to MMADDR are placed in a
FIFO by the System Agent. This is a limited resource, only 64 entries, of
which 20 are reserved for Display and PCH writes, and so we must take
care not to queue up too many writes. To avoid this, there is counter
which we can poll to ensure there are sufficient free entries in the
fifo.
"Issuing a write to a full FIFO is not supported; at worst it could
result in corruption or a system hang."

Seems like we are forever to be cursed with buggy firmware, so allow the
user to explicitly set the panel connection status.
Of secondary utility for cases where I run laptops with the lid closed,
but still want to configure the LVDS.

Grab the latest stabilisation bits from -fixes and some suspend and
resume fixes from linus.

This abstracts the pci/platform interface out a step further,
we can go further but this is far enough for now to allow USB
to be plugged in.
The drivers now just call the init code directly for their
device type.

This is just an idea that might or might not be a good idea,
it basically adds two ioctls to create a dumb and map a dumb buffer
suitable for scanout. The handle can be passed to the KMS ioctls to create
a framebuffer.
It looks to me like it would be useful in the following cases:
a) in development drivers - we can always provide a shadowfb fallback.
b) libkms users - we can clean up libkms a lot and avoid linking
to libdrm_*.
c) plymouth via libkms is a lot easier.
Userspace bits would be just calls + mmaps. We could probably
mark these handles somehow as not being suitable for acceleartion
so as top stop people who are dumber than dumb.

Early chipsets (gen2/3) used function 1 as a placeholder for multi-head.
We used to ignore these since they were not assigned to
PCI_CLASS_DISPLAY_VGA. However with 934f992c7 we attempt to bind to all
Intel PCI_CLASS_DISPLAY devices (and functions) to work in multi-gpu
systems. This fails hard on gen2/3.

Judging by comments in the BIOS, if the SDVO LVDS option h40 is enabled,
then we are supposed to query the real panel type via Int15. We don't do
this and so for the Sony Vaio VGC-JS210J which has otherwise default
values, we choose the wrong mode.
This patch adds a driver option, i915.vbt_sdvo_panel_type, which can be
used to override the value in the VBT.

Starting with SandyBridge (though possible with earlier hacked BIOSes),
the BIOS may initialise the IGFX as secondary to a discrete GPU. Prior,
it would simply disable the integrated GPU. So we adjust our PCI class
mask to match any DISPLAY_CLASS device.
In such a configuration, the IGFX is not a primary VGA controller and
so should not take part in VGA arbitration, and the error return from
vga_client_register() is expected.

- misnamed intel_disable_clock_gating function (was only about rc6)

- rc6 enabling code belongs in its own function (allows us to move the
actual clock gating enable call back into restore_state)

When bringing up new hardware, or otherwise experimenting, GPU hangs are
a way of life. However, the automatic GPU reset can do more harm than
good under these circumstances, as we may wish to capture a full trace for
debugging.

We need to track the state of the switch in drivers, so that after s/r
we don't resume the card we've explicitly switched off before. Also
don't allow a userspace open to occur if we've switched the gpu off.

This patch adds new functions for use by the drm core:
.get_vblank_timestamp() provides a precise timestamp
for the end of the most recent (or current) vblank
interval of a given crtc, as needed for the DRI2
implementation of the OML_sync_control extension.
It is a thin wrapper around the drm function
drm_calc_vbltimestamp_from_scanoutpos() which does
almost all the work.
.get_scanout_position() provides the current horizontal
and vertical video scanout position and "in vblank"
status of a given crtc, as needed by the drm for use by
drm_calc_vbltimestamp_from_scanoutpos().
The patch modifies the pageflip completion routine
to use these precise vblank timestamps as the timestamps
for pageflip completion events.
This code has been only tested on a HP-Mini Netbook with
Atom processor and Intel 945GME gpu. The codepath for
(IS_G4X(dev) || IS_GEN5(dev) || IS_GEN6(dev)) gpu's
has not been tested so far due to lack of hardware.

This still uses the agp functions to actually reinstate the mappings
(with a gross hack to make agp cooperate), but it wires everything
up correctly for the switchover.
The call to agp_rebind_memory can be dropped because all non-kms drivers
do all their rebinding on EnterVT.
v2: Be more paranoid and flush the chipset cache after restoring gtt
mappings.

This has proven sufficient to recover from a hang of the GPU using the
gem_bad_blit test while at the KMS console then starting X. When
attempting the same during an X session, the timer doesn't appear to
trigger.

Frame buffer compression is broken on Ironlake due to buggy hardware.
Currently it is disabled through chicken bits, but it still consumes
over 1W more than if we simply never attempt to enable the FBC code
paths.

The issue is that we may become stuck executing a long running shader
and continually attempt to reset the GPU. (Or maybe we tickle some bug
and need to break the vicious cycle.) So if we are detect a second hang
within 5 seconds, give up trying to programme the GPU and report it
wedged.

So far only found registers for i830, i845, i865 and one of those has no
effect on i865!

optimistic...

When the GPU is reset, the fence registers are invalidated, so release
the objects and clear them out.
